This afternoon a device has leaked from the halls of Acer with an 8-inch display and a keyboard dock attached along its longest side. This device is an 8-inch display-toting tablet that’s being reported to be carrying Windows 8 Pro 32-bit and an Intel Atom Z2760 processor under its hood. This tablet appears by all means to be detachable from its keyboard base and may be revealed along with the Star Trek-promoted transformable notebook we saw this morning at the start of next month.
This device has appeared in several photos, some as a tablet, some as a one-piece machine with a tablet bit being detachable. What’s able to be seen here is the machine’s ability to take on more than one form. As we’ve seen from Acer in the recent past, the ability to work as a notebook or a tablet is not something the designers at this manufacturer are afraid of.
UPDATE: MiniMachines appears to have had a takedown notice issued – take a peek while you still can!
Perhaps the most intriguing image is the one you see below. Here you’ve got the 8-inch tablet set against the back – or is that the bottom – of a notebook. This notebook appears to take on a form that’s just a bit different from the docked version you see above. Is there more than a couple of forms of machine here?
If you compare this device with what we saw this morning in the Star Trek Into Darkness teaser, you see that it’s not necessarily impossible for this device and that device to be completely separate releases. Here in this tablet amalgamation you’ve got what very well could be in one case a keyboard dock attached to a large display (like a standard notebook) and in the other case a dock for this smaller tablet.
Could this be a device that takes the idea of a multi-display machine like the ASUS Padfone and makes it happen with a notebook/mini-tablet combo rather than with a detachable full-size tablet or phone? Stay tuned as we get the full story on May 3rd (if not before!) Stick with us here on SlashGear through our big Acer tag portal as we keep on digging!

Microsoft is expected to make a lot of announcements at the Build Conference, which takes place in the last week of June. The company will reveal more information about the upcoming software updates, though quite a lot is already known courtesy of leaked builds. They’ll also be making hardware related announcements. Microsoft CFO Peter Klein has already confirmed that the company is working with OEMs on smaller Windows RT/Windows 8 devices. These purported leaked images of an Acer Iconia W3 tablet lead us to believe that Acer will be the first manufacturer to release a smaller device based on the aforementioned platform.
This 8-inch tablet is supposedly powered by a 1.8Ghz Intel Atom Z2760 processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. Though the package isn’t as powerful as other tablets in the market, it will reportedly be enough to run all Windows applications correctly. No specific information is available right now about the display. The tablet is expected to have dual cameras for taking photos and video conferencing. An optional keyboard may also be available for the Acer Iconia W3, it will ship with a pocket that protects the tablet against bumps and also doubles as a stand. No clear details regarding pricing have been revealed, but the device is expected to be available in September.

Windows 8.1 Preview And Windows Server 2012 R2 References Discovered In Leaked Build
Posted in: Today's ChiliYesterday we reported that yet another Windows 8 build had been leaked on the internet. While it did not bring any substantial changes, the new Kiosk mode was discovered in this build. That’s not all though. References of Windows 8.1 Preview and Windows Server 2012 R2 have been unearthed in the code of this leaked build’s system files. The references mean it is highly likely that Windows Server 2012 and Windows RT users will also be included in the upcoming upgrade cycle.
Microsoft is expected to make a number of announcements relating to its latest software at the Build developer conference taking place in June. That’s not all, Microsoft is also expected to make some hardware related announcements as well, particularly about its 7 or 8-inch devices. Code from leaked Windows 8 build 9374 also points to Windows RT 8.1, this leads us to believe that Microsoft might launch Public Preview of Windows RT upgrade for tablets such as the Surface RT. In the past three weeks, three Windows 8 builds have been leaked. Perhaps more references to Windows 8.1 Preview and Windows Server 2012 R2 will be uncovered in any subsequent leaked builds.

This week a touch and type combination notebook from Acer has appeared in the first product-toting teaser video spot for Star Trek Into Darkness that’s appeared in what’s set to be a several weeks-long dual-brand campaign. While from what we’ve been told Acer does not plan on having any products appear in the film itself, this cross-promotional teaser will benefit both Acer and the folks behind Star Trek. The film Star Trek Into Darkness is about to be released both in the United States and internationally, while the device appearing in the teaser is set to be revealed in full on May 3rd.
The setup for the release at hand has had its stage set by a series of three devices from Acer, each of them appearing in the home for this campaign: Explore Beyond Limits (dot com). This site has several wallpapers with a Star Trek theme and also shows the Acer Iconia W510, Aspire S7, and Aspire V5 Touch. With these three devices in mind, the trailer for Star Trek (with Acer device inside) should have you wondering what the future holds.
The notebook in the trailer above will once again be taking the touch-friendly interface created by Microsoft’s Windows 8 to an ever-so-slightly different place than Acer has gone before. From what we’re seeing here, this notebook will be coming with extended drag fins (or bumpers below the back of the bottom of the base), as well as a display that lifts up beyond the average limit of a notebook’s face.
It would appear that this machine’s touchscreen display and top hood lift up and turn back on a second hinge, allowing the entire notebook to become something that looks similar to the hero spaceship in the Star Trek movies and original Star Trek television show. This machine will have the capabilities of a tablet, a notebook, and some sort of in-between oddity, without a doubt.
This video also adds an interesting twist to the release schedule for Star Trek Into Darkness – let us know if you’re finding this particular push pleasing to your science fiction-loving mind, or if you prefer the regular plain-old trailer set instead?

We’ve been hearing some interesting rumors in regards to Windows 8.1 over the past few weeks, such as the next Windows update possibly including a “Boot to Desktop“ option. It seems Microsoft may be considering bringing back the old feel of Windows with this option, and it might be taking it a step further as it’s being reported today Microsoft will bring back the much-missed Start button to Windows 8.1.
The report is coming from sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans and have revealed Windows 8.1 is expected to mark the return of the Start button. The Start button in Windows 8.1 will simply allow users to access the Start Screen and will not bring back the Start Menu of yester-Windows. The Start button is expected to look nearly identical to the current Windows flag that is used in the Charm bar. (more…)

We’ve heard whispers of Microsoft possibly bringing back the Start button just recently, but more reports are coming in that reinforce this possibility. In the next update to Windows 8, which is said to be dubbed Windows 8.1 as a part of Microsoft’s “Blue” update initiative, the Start button will make its way back into the OS, but not all the way.
According to The Verge, sources “familiar with Microsoft’s plans” reveal that Windows 8.1 will see the Start button make a reappearance. However, the button will only let users access the Start Screen, and not the traditional Start Menu like in past version of Windows, but the button will still be located at the bottom-left corner like it always has.
If you weren’t aware, Microsoft killed off the Start button with the release of Windows 8, calling it a redundant feature since users can easily pin programs to the task bar. However, the Redmond-based company has received a lot of backlash for doing so, and tons of third-party tweaks have been made to bring back the Start button to the new OS.
Microsoft is also rumored to be adding an option that will allow users to boot directly to the traditional desktop environment in Windows 8.1 as well. This will give users the option to bypass the Start Screen in Windows 8, and go directly to the desktop view. Numerous third-party tweaks have been made for this as well.

Microsoft, Google Operating Systems Will Reportedly Power Intel’s Cheap Devices
Posted in: Today's ChiliIntel is reportedly working on cheap tablets and laptops. These new low cost devices will run on operating systems made by Google and Microsoft. Paul Otellini, CEO Intel, already said that touch devices could come with a price tag as low as $200. Though it does not necessarily mean that such a cheap tablet will run Windows 8, it’ll probably run Google’s OS. Right now a Windows 8 based tablet or laptop costs more than $600 which isn’t exactly in line with the price points Intel has in mind.
According to some analysts there has been chatter about 7-inch tablets powered by Windows 8. These tablets are said to tout Intel Atom processors and price tags as low as $299. The fact remains though, would a $200 Windows 8 touch device be at par in performance with other tablets of the same price range? While it has been rumored that Microsoft has lowered Windows 8 OEM prices in a bid to boost up demand, how much of a profit margin will a sub $200 Windows 8 touch device leave? These are essential questions that haven’t been answered yet, and many analysts too are asking the same questions. Are such products going to be feasible?

In the last two weeks we have seen two Windows 8 builds being leaked. Yet another build has been leaked and it shows off an entirely new feature, one that is quite exciting. Called Kiosk Mode, it is expected to be released with Windows 8.1 later this year. As far as this latest leaked build, 9374, is concerned there aren’t any substantial changes when compared to previous ones.
The Kiosk Mode feature will be available in PC settings menu and it will allow Windows functionality to be limited. It will be possible to place user accounts under lock down. Kiosk Mode can also be configured to run an app on login, this opens up a whole new range of possibilities as the machine can be used in retail stores for demos or as standalone kiosks. This feature probably wouldn’t be of any use to the average user, it does have a lot to offer to enterprises and businesses of all sizes. A preview build of Windows 8 is expected to be released at Microsoft’s BUILD conference, which will be held towards the end of June.
