Nokia Forks Android In Mobile Services Push — $122 Nokia X Will Also Be Lumia “Feeder”

More proof, if proof were needed, that Android won the smartphone OS wars: Nokia, the former world No.1 smartphone maker and, nowadays, the primary OEM for Microsoft’s third-placed Windows Phone platform has just announced a new family of smartphones built upon the Android Open Source Project — confirming a slew of earlier rumours that Nokia was cooking up an Android device strategy.… Read More

LG Does Not Do Windows Phone…Yet

LG Does Not Do Windows Phone...YetThe Windows Phone platform from Microsoft has had its biggest “fan” in the form of Nokia, once a heavyweight in the world of mobile phones before smartphones made featurephones irrelevant. Having said that, the likes of Samsung and HTC have churned out Windows Phone-powered smartphones in the past that can be counted on just the fingers that are on one hand, preferring instead to concentrate on the Android-powered platform by Google instead. Well, while Microsoft has announced earlier today that LG happens to be one of the hardware developers for the Windows Phone platform, it seems as though LG has not yet made any concrete plans to churn out handsets which will run on Windows Phone.

Microsoft And Qualcomm Create Windows Phone Reference Design

Microsoft And Qualcomm Create Windows Phone Reference DesignWhile Google appears to be relatively flexible when it comes to Android OEMs choosing their own hardware, Microsoft has adopted a stricter approach which typically required their manufacturing partners to follow a set of hardware guidelines, as well as to have their chosen hardware pre-approved by Microsoft before they would be released into the market. We cannot blame Microsoft for putting such a system into place as we’re sure they’re just trying to make the best Windows Phone experience possible, although at the same time it was also considered to be a barrier to entry to the Windows Phone market.

The good news is that things could start easing up for Windows Phone OEMs, thanks to Microsoft and Qualcomm working on a new reference design program which basically will allow manufacturers to get Windows Phone handsets onto the shelves as quickly as possible, with as little restrictions in the way. While Qualcomm believes that the reference design can be used to make any class of handset, they will most likely be used heavily in lower-cost products due to Qualcomm’s use of their 200 and 400 series of chipsets. In the meantime Microsoft themselves are trying to persuade manufacturers to adopt the design. We can only hope that this will result in more Windows Phone handsets which would help increase their market share.

Microsoft Announces New Windows Phone OEM Partners

Microsoft Announces New Windows Phone OEM PartnersAt the moment we guess it has become obvious by now that Nokia pretty much dominates the Windows Phone market. That is because apart from Nokia’s Asha lineup, they have pretty much put all of their proverbial eggs into Microsoft’s basket, so they have no choice but to make their Windows Phone products as attractive and appealing as possible. This is compared to other Windows Phone manufacturers who haven’t been as aggressive as Nokia when it comes to marketing their Windows Phone handsets. That being said, if you’re sick of Nokia dominating the Windows Phone market, you might be pleased to learn that Microsoft has recently added new Windows Phone partners to the mix.

In a recent post by Microsoft, it has been revealed that the new Windows Phone OEM partners include companies like Foxconn, Gionee, JSR, Karbonn, Lava, Lenovo, LG, Longcheer, and ZTE. It’s interesting why Microsoft has listed LG and ZTE as both companies have attempted Windows Phone products in the past, but perhaps they have decided to renew their interest and efforts, who knows? It is also expected that Microsoft’s new partners will supplement their current partners which they have listed as HTC, Samsung, and Huawei (no Nokia presumably because Nokia will be folded in Microsoft post-acquisition). Unfortunately apart from announcing the new partners, Microsoft did not mention anything else about them, such as what sort of products we might be able to expect from them, when we might be able to expect them, and so on, but hopefully we will be able to look forward to something great in the near future.

Windows Phone 8.1 Changes Include Dual-SIM And Cheaper Devices Support

Windows Phone 8.1 Changes Include Dual SIM And Cheaper Devices Support

We didn’t expect Microsoft to talk much about Windows Phone 8.1 at its press and analyst event ahead of the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, and the company has stuck to that, although it did offer a clue of what to expect. More information on the update is expected to be revealed at the company’s own BUILD conference in April. Windows Phone VP Joe Belfiore says that Microsoft will “technically” support all existing Windows Phone 8 devices when the update drops this spring, he didn’t refer to it as Windows Phone 8.1.

Microsoft ‘Less Excited’ About Nokia’s Android Ambitions

Microsoft Less Excited About Nokias Android Ambitions

Over the past few years Nokia has become synonymous with Windows Phone smartphones, it is Microsoft’s largest WP OEM that has played a major part in driving growth for Redmond’s mobile operating system. The company’s devices and services division is now set to be acquired by Microsoft for $7.17 billion, though that deal hasn’t been closed just yet. As it continues to function independently for now, there have been many rumors recently about Nokia launching an Android phone. When asked how Microsoft felt about that, Windows Phone VP Joe Belfiore said “Some things we’re excited about, some things we’re less excited about.”

Facebook Messenger App For Windows Phone 8 Coming Soon

Microsoft has undoubtedly been working very hard to close what’s known as the “app-gap” between its mobile platform and rivals like iOS and Android. Just a few months back it confirmed that popular apps like Vine and Instagram were finally making their way to Windows Phone. Today Microsoft’s Windows Phone VP Joe Belfiore confirmed at the press & analyst event ahead of Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona that the standable Facebook Messenger app for Windows Phone 8 is going to be released soon.
