Windows Phone Install Base Sits At 50 Million

Windows Phone Install Base Sits At 50 MillionJust last week an interesting study was conducted in which analysts claimed that Microsoft’s Windows Phone would overtake iOS as soon as 2014. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but the general consensus is that it will most likely not be true. That being said, we should not be so quick to dismiss the Windows Phone platform because according to the latest figures released by AdDuplex, the install base of Windows Phone is currently at 50 million. Granted this number pales in comparison to the likes of iOS and Android, where the former managed to hit the 50 million mark back in 2010, but it is still pretty significant for the Windows Phone platform nonetheless.

According to the numbers, AdDuplex estimates that there are still around 12 million Windows Phone 7 handsets that are still in use, although these numbers are declining at around 2% every month. Alternatively Windows Phone 8 is sitting at 38 million and those numbers are expected to increase. As it stands Nokia is probably the biggest name when it comes to Windows Phone handsets, but with a Samsung Windows Phone 8 device reportedly in the works and with Archos announcing plans for Windows Phone handsets themselves, perhaps the install base of Windows Phone 8 could increase faster.

nokia-lumia-1520-review-1Android and iOS are two of the most popular smartphone platforms at the moment, with Android taking the number one spot followed by iOS. Concept Cortana Video Mistaken For The Real Deal

Cortana's_look_in_Halo_4Word on the street has it that Microsoft is developing a voice assistant feature for Windows Phone called Cortana. Assuming the rumors are to be believed, this feature is said to launch in April, but recently thanks to a leaked video, it seems that an alleged video of Cortana in action has managed to hit the web, showing off some of its features in the process. Unfortunately the video proved to be a fake as mentioned by its creator, WPLeaker. According to WPLeaker, the video was meant to be a concept of what Cortana could do, rather than actual footage itself. In fact it seems that the goal behind the video was to bait those who knew about Cortana into stepping forward and possibly accidentally revealing more information in the process.

Unfortunately WPLeaker’s goal failed and he has since apologized for the deception and inconvenience it might have caused publications who might have reported on the story. However WPLeaker’s concept is pretty cool and looks interesting, but as to whether the final product will actually look the same or function in a similar manner remains to be seen. Alternatively there was also another alleged video of Cortana that was uploaded recently which looks very different from the concept video but we can’t vouch for its legitimacy either. In any case if you’re curious as to what WPLeaker’s concept is about, click here for the video.

Alleged Windows Phone Voice Assistant Cortana Spotted In Video

It does seem as though Microsoft, too, wants to jump aboard the voice assistant bandwagon. I do wonder how will Apple’s Siri see this particular development – will they lean more toward being reactive, or will continue to innovate regardless of what the ‘competition’ have in store? Only time will be able to tell, but the latest rumor to roll off the mill points to Microsoft possibly developing a voice assistant that is not too far away from the likes of Google Now as well as Siri. Known as Cortana, this voice assistant for the Windows Phone platform has allegedly been spotted in action on a video that is shown above.
