Forbes: Windows Phone Could Overtake iOS In Due Time

Forbes: Windows Phone Could Overtake iOS In Due TimeI guess if there is one thing that corporations and companies should take note of, it would be this – one should never, ever, rest on one’s laurels. After all, you can never quite tell just when your company might fall behind the competitor so far that it would be nigh impossible to catch up with the rest of the pack. We have seen how the mighty have fallen in the past, and hence, having a slight sense of paranoia is not necessarily a bad thing. When it comes to the mobile operating system arena, it seems as though iOS and Android would continue to occupy top spots for years to come, but Forbes has a less optimistic outlook for iOS, touting that Windows Phone could eventually surpass the iOS market share in as little as 3 years’ time.

Sounds impossible? Forbes’ Mark Fidelman claims that the entire range of Windows Phone 8 mobile devices might just overtake the number of iOS devices in a matter of three years. The reason behind this projection is the fact that Windows Phone happens to be the fastest growing mobile platform, which happens more in emerging markets than anywhere else, while seeing a 48% year-over-year gain in the Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) region; with Nokia enjoying a 366% year-over-year gain in sales in the US. Of course, when you scrutinize the statistics further, they tell a different story. For instance, hitting 5% market share from 3.5% might have a higher percentage increase, but it does not amount to much in terms of actual sales. Will Microsoft’s “One Microsoft” strategy also pan out to be a winner eventually? Only time will tell.

Windows Phone Grows By An Additional 0.2% In The US

Windows Phone Grows By An Additional 0.2% In The USThe Microsoft Windows Phone platform is definitely not one of the most popular around. Given the enormous shadow that iOS and Android have cast, it would be hard for Windows Phone and any other smaller platform to step into the light, but we suppose slow and steady wins the race. According to the latest Comscore figures ending in October 2013, it has been revealed that Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform has managed to gain some extra ground in the US market, growing by 0.2%, which has suggested that the platform saw almost half a million US users hop aboard the Windows Phone bandwagon in the past few months.

Comscore’s numbers also revealed that during those months, pretty much every platform grew, save for BlackBerry which actually dipped by 0.7%, and Symbian which is about to be phased out anyway. While it’s safe to assume that iOS and Android are popular all over the world, the same can’t be said for Windows Phone. The platform has not exactly been doing well in the US, but over in the Asia and Europe region, Windows Phone appears to be doing relatively well for itself and does not come across the disaster that some people would like to portray it as.

Microsoft Reportedly Increasing Windows Phone OTA Downloads To 100MB

Microsoft Reportedly Increasing Windows Phone OTA Downloads To 100MBWhen it comes to OTA downloads, most mobile operating systems will place a cap on the download to prevent users from accidentally exceeding the data cap allotted to them by their carriers. For iOS the limit has been increased to 100MB with iOS 7 (originally from 20MB), and it looks like Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform will soon be getting an increase in its cap as well. This is according to several reports where some users have claimed that their OTA limit has since been raised to 100MB as well, although this does not appear to be widespread yet.

This isn’t the first time Microsoft increased their OTA cap. Back when Windows Phone 7 was first launched, the cap was set at 20MB before being raised to 50MB, but now it looks like Microsoft will be bumping it to 100MB. For the most part, most OTA updates tend to be relatively small, but we suppose having the freedom of 100MB gives developers a chance to create bigger updates, or allow users to update their apps freely without having to wait until they get home or get to a WiFi location. In any case there is a chance Microsoft is rolling this out on a regional basis, so perhaps it might be a while before we receive it ourselves. In the meantime if you have received the update, do let us know in the comments below!

Kantar Worldpanel: Windows Phone Passes 10% Market Share In Europe

Kantar Worldpanel: Windows Phone Passes 10% Market Share In EuropeWindows Phone seems to be slowly but surely picking up steam, and it is pulling ahead of BlackBerry as well in certain markets. In fact, market analyst company Kantar Worldpanel has just introduced its latest report that features the 3-month period ending in October this year. In this report, Microsoft’s Windows Phone mobile operating system managed to make its way past the 10% market share point over in Europe, which is rather impressive since that would translate to double the amount of market share that it held exactly one year back.

In 2012 at the corresponding time, Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system carried a 4.7% market share. Kantar claims that majority of the Windows Phone-powered devices happen to hail from the low end side of things, which should not come across as a shock to onlookers since the Nokia Lumia 520 has proven to be quite the best seller, making up approximately 25% of all Windows Phone devices. Will we be able to see additional inroads made into the mobile operating system market by Windows Phone in the future? Some might say yes, others would think negatively, but developers can take heart in knowing that this is a growing platform, although the numbers are still far from what iOS and Android can conjure up.

Windows Phone Takes 10% Of European Smartphone Market Share

Windows Phone Takes 10% Of European Smartphone Market ShareWhile Windows Phone might not necessarily be the most popular smartphone platform at the moment, they are surely gaining some traction, especially over in Europe where it has been confirmed that Windows Phone’s market share has managed to take 10% of the market share in the top five European markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom). These numbers are courtesy of the Kantar Worldpanel ComTech whose strategic insight director, Dominic Sunnebo, stated, “Momentum for Windows Phone is continuing, although its growth remains reliant on low-end handsets. In Britain, almost three quarters of Nokia Lumia sales in the latest period were low-end devices such as the Lumia 520 and 620 – a pattern that is similar across other EU markets.”

As it stands, Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform in the US is still under 10% in terms of market share, suggesting that perhaps those living in Europe along with other emerging markets might favor the Windows Phone platform more. Back in November it was also suggested that Windows Phone’s market share in Europe was at 9%, so to see it cross the 10% threshold is indeed a notable achievement on Microsoft’s end. It’s interesting that despite Nokia’s best efforts to push out high-end hardware, it ends up being their low-end devices that manages to do well instead.

Next Windows Phone Update Could Include “Flick To Close” Among Others

When it comes to the world of mobile operating systems, you will find that having periodic updates from time to time is essential to keep up with the times, not to mention making sure that your users will remain happy. Well, it seems that Microsoft has decided to throw in a slew of features in their new Windows Phone 8 update, where the first would be the ability to make use of the memory card which will stash your apps as well as attachments, so that the internal storage will not get filled up too quickly. Apart from that, Windows Phone 8 might just see another feature that Windows 8 users have long enjoyed – the ability to flick down an app so that it will close.

Apart from that, there will also be an update that is arriving sometime next summer that will see the introduction of an integrated file manager for Windows Phone, which will most probably be part of the features found in Windows Phone 8.1. Who knows? It could also be thrown into the mix as part of a tiny GDR update. Either way, it points to Microsoft being less strict about its mobile operating system, which is a good thing according to certain quarters.

Windows Phone 8 Users To Get Mega Cloud Storage Too

Windows Phone 8 Users To Get Mega Cloud Storage TooJust a few days ago, we were talking about how iOS users have now received the official Mega app for the platform, which was something that could have riled the feathers of Windows Phone 8 users. Well, if you happen to be part of that crowd, fret not as there is nothing much for you to mope about. In fact, we have word that Windows Phone 8 users will now be able to gain access to the Mega cloud storage service according to a confirmation which was posted by a Reddit user.

Mega was not too generous when it came to information concerning a specific launch date of the Windows Phone 8 Mega app, but there were hints that we could very well be looking at an early 2014 launch window. Right now, Mega is also available on the Android platform, and whether it is on the iOS or Android mobile operating systems, it would be free, letting you browse your storage accounts, preview and stream specific documents and files, as well as send links to files and folders to other Mega users. Needless to say, this particular app will continue to improve, as future versions of it is also touted to support the likes of photo synchronization. Nice to see Windows Phone 8 getting more recognition from developers and companies now as a viable platform, no?
