Samsung ATIV S Hack Delivers 3 Column Live Tiles

Samsung ATIV S Hack Delivers 3 Column Live TilesDon’t you just love hacks? And by that, I mean it to be of the good kind, not the hacks that make life miserable for everyone in the case of identity theft. Well, here we are with word that some folks over at the XDA-Dev forum have had a fun time messing around with the Windows Phone operating system on the Samsung ATIV S, where they managed to introduce the 3 column live tile home screen that happens to chug along pretty nicely on a display that has 720p resolution.

In order to enable a 3 column live tile home screen on your Samsung ATIV S, all you need to do is to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\Software \ Microsoft \ Shell \ OEM \ Start and change ScreenSize to 1, ensuring that the home screen on your Samsung ATIV S would end up looking like the Nokia Lumia 1520 which is on the verge of a release. For additional detail that would be able to shed more light as well as insight into this particular hack, it would bode you well to head on over to the XDA Developers forum.

Oh yeah, I am also quite sure that you might also want to check out the custom ROM for the Samsung ATIV S while you are at it.

Microsoft Remote Desktop App For Windows Phone Is Being Developed

Microsoft Remote Desktop App For Windows Phone Is Being Developed

Earlier this month Microsoft said that it is going to release a remote desktop app for both iOS and Android. It did indeed, the Microsoft remote desktop app for iOS and Android has been released and is now available for download. The app lets users control their Windows PC through their tablet or smartphone. Many wondered why Microsoft hadn’t released the app for its own mobile platform, Windows Phone. The company has confirmed that it is working on an app for its own platform as well.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to TNW that the company is working on “a version of the app for Windows Phone,” though a release timeframe has not been provided. The spokesperson has said that the timeframe will be shared at a later point in time. The apps for iOS and Android allow users to access remote resources and more through a Remote Desktop Gateway, connect securely to all apps and data on a local machine through Network Layer Authentication technology and manage all remote connections through a connection center. The Windows Phone remote desktop app will presumably have the same functions as well, when it is ultimately released. Hopefully Microsoft will reveal when we can expect the app to drop, soon.

The new Windows Remote Desktop application for mobile devices, which was launched last week for iOS and Android devices, will soon be available for Windows Phone, reports The Next Web. Microsoft’s Windows Phone Achieves 15% Market Share In Thailand

Microsofts Windows Phone Achieves 15% Market Share In ThailandWhile Microsoft’s Windows Phone market might not necessarily have the highest overall market share in terms of smartphones around the world, there are some markets in which Microsoft is excelling in, and a recent one is in Thailand. Speaking in Bangkok, MIcrosoft’s International President revealed that their Windows Phone platform has managed to achieve a 15% of the Thai smartphone market share in a span of a little over a year. What’s even more surprising is that 15 months before, the Windows Phone market share in Thailand was around 2-3%, so to see a leap from 2-3% to a massive 15% is indeed pretty impressive.

According to Jean-Philippe Courtois, “In Thailand, it is about 15 per cent [of the market] and in some Latin American countries such as Mexico they are going beyond 20 per cent – and in Finland it is over 30 per cent. Some of the larger European countries like the UK, France, Spain and Italy are now all 10 per cent. Again, we came from nowhere just a few years ago and, yes, we have ambitions to grow our market share and make the market more balanced, which is healthy for customers.” It looks like the Windows Phone market share is really on the rise, but will it eventually beat out iOS and Android? We guess we will have to wait and see, but for now things are looking up for Microsoft!

Windows Phone 8 Update 3 release brings on more blurred lines

The system update to Windows Phone 8 known as GDR3 is coming soon, and having been announced by Microsoft just this week, we’ll find it coming to developers as soon as tomorrow. The rest of the humble citizens of the Windows Phone 8 universe will have to wait a few more weeks – but once […]

Third Windows Phone 8 Update Announced

Windows Phone 8 UpdateMicrosoft announced on Monday the third update to its Windows Phone 8 mobile platform featuring updates including support for a larger Start screen at a higher resolution. Microsoft also included support for a faster processor, a driving mode, accessibility features and a few more.

The update creates the ability for Windows Phone 8 to support larger 5 and 6 inch mobile devices which some are calling “phablets”. Microsoft did not use the word phablet or refer to any larger devices being released however the main image on the release post from Microsoft had “phablet” in the file name. This would handle 1080p HD resolution and allows for as many as six Live Tiles across the screen. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Nokia come out with a larger device with the updated OS from Microsoft after Microsoft’s recent purchase of Nokia’s handset division.

An update for a faster processor will support the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, and a new Driving Mode will limit distractions and even send automatic replies to tell those trying to contact you that you are driving. The Phone 8 update also includes a set of accessibility features, improved hotspot WiFi sharing, increased ringtone configuration, a rotation lock (something Android and iOS have had for a long time), storage management improvements, the ability to manually close an app quickly, and better Bluetooth.

The update will be rolling out to Windows Phone 8 over the next several months according to Microsoft, and if you are supporting apps for Windows Phone 8 you can get the Windows Phone preview for developers starting today.
