Microsoft Reportedly Waives Windows Phone Licensing Fee For Indian OEMs

Microsoft Reportedly Waives Windows Phone Licensing Fee For Indian OEMsIt was reported that Microsoft could be considering lowering the prices on the license that OEMs would have to purchase if they wished to install Windows Phone on their devices. This is considered to be a barrier of entry for some OEMs since not all OEMs have the necessary resources to invest.

Not to mention that given Windows Phone’s position in the market right now, not everyone is that eager to invest their money into the platform. That being said, it seems that Microsoft is doing everything they can to get OEMs on board because according to a report from The Times of India, they claim that Microsoft will be offering Windows Phone to Indian OEMs for free. Microsoft Noting App Submissions With Windows Phone 8.1 Compatibility

Microsoft Noting App Submissions With Windows Phone 8.1 CompatibilityWindows Phone 8.1 is an update that many Windows Phone 8 users are probably waiting for. After all the update is expected to introduce a host of changes and improvements to the operating system, as well as bring about new features, one of them supposedly being Cortana, the voice assistant feature for Windows Phone.

However the question about app compatibility remains and we have to wonder if Windows Phone 8.1 will be that drastic that it might “break” apps, or have apps run into compatibility or optimization issues. We’re assuming for the most part that it should be fine, but Microsoft is not taking any chances and has recently started noting Windows Phone app submissions as to whether the app is Windows Phone 8.1 compatible or not. Acer Still Undecided On Windows Phone, Thinks It Needs More Marketing

Acer Still Undecided On Windows Phone, Thinks It Needs More MarketingWhen it come to Windows Phone handsets, Acer appears to be somewhere on the bench, and sometimes in the field. The company has released several Windows Phone handsets in the past, although we’re not sure what their strategy is because for the most part, Acer’s handsets are rather unassuming and to a certain extent forgettable.

That being said, it seems that Acer is still in talks with Microsoft regarding Windows Phone devices, at least that’s according to an interview that MobileNews had with Acer’s EMEA VP of Smartphones, Allen Burnes. (more…)

Wi-Fi Sense Spotted In Windows Phone 8.1

In one of the more recent videos that we have come across the Wi-Fi Sense feature in the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 mobile operating system. In a relatively short clip on UnleashThePhones’ YouTube channel, it depicts how one is able to turn off Wi-Fi connectivity on their smartphone for a short time, before it is turned on again by itself. Wi-Fi connections can be turned off for a single hour, or you can opt to have it shut off for four hours or an entire day in addition to the normal manual selection. Apart from that, the Wi-Fi Sense feature was also shown off. Assuming one actually drops by a Wi-Fi hotspot on a regular basis, this particular feature would allow them to save up their username and password information in order to ease the burden on your brain. This makes life easier if you want to login automatically the next time that the handset “senses” that the Wi-Fi hotspot is within vicinity.

Windows Phone Narrowly Edges Out BlackBerry In The USBack in 2012, BlackBerry’s then CEO, Thorsten Heins, expressed his belief and confidence that BlackBerry could overtake Windows Phone and become the third most used smartphone operating system, behind both Android and iOS.

Unfortunately the latest numbers released by comScore are suggesting otherwise. In fact it seems that in terms of market share in the US, Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform has managed to edge out BlackBerry to claim the number two spot, although not by much. (more…)
