Nokia Amber update arriving on Lumia devices: camera improvements, Glance Screen, and plenty more (updated)

Nokia Amber update arriving on Lumia devices camera improvements, Glance Screen, and plenty more

Those unofficial Amber ROMs you (briefly) considered toying with 10 days ago? History. Nokia has just announced that the honest-to-goodness, ready-for-consumption Amber code has been approved, and Lumia owners the world over will begin seeing it hit their Windows Phone 8 handset in the coming days / weeks. The software update is a fairly major one, delivering a wide range of new and improved features and apps, like Nokia Glance Screen with the standby clock and an even better imaging experience that mirrors the one found on the 1020. Users will be graced with a new FM radio player and improvements to Xbox music and the Internet Explorer browser, as well as improved image processing and the Nokia Smart Camera app (which debuted on the Lumia 925).

The Glance Screen acts a bit like the glanceable extras added to the Moto X, but sadly, it won’t be available on the Lumia 520 and Lumia 625, which have a smaller display memory. Longstanding Nokia loyalists will surely appreciate the addition of “Flip to silence” and “double-tap to unlock,” and those who rely heavily on Here maps will find future updates easier to install. The rollout starts now first for the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 in selected countries as well as the Lumia 521, Lumia 810, and Lumia 928 in the US, while owners of the Lumia 520, Lumia 620, Lumia 720, Lumia 820 or Lumia 920 will likely have to wait until the end of September.

Update: There’s one more important tidbit: if you’re using a Lumia 920, 925 or 928, you also get the Nokia Pro Camera app.

We knew it was coming to Sprint this summer, and we knew it would run $150 (with a two-year contract and $50 rebate, of course) — and now the carrier’s given us an exact date: August 16th. (Not to say we didn’t already have our suspicions…) Samsung’s ATIV S Neo will become the Now Network’s second Windows Phone 8 handset this Friday. The 4.8-inch smartphone packs a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, an eight-megapixel camera and NFC-based ATIV Beam sharing. More info on all of the above after the break.

HTC Likely To Move Away From Windows Phone 8

HTC Likely To Move Away From Windows Phone 8

With the longstanding duopoly of iOS and Android, a number of mobile platforms constantly wage battle for the third position in the global market. In some markets BlackBerry is ahead of Windows Phone 8, in others its the other way around. Many analysts believe that Windows Phone 8 is actually in a much better position as opposed to BlackBerry, even with its new BB10 platform. Nokia is one of the biggest manufacturers of WP8 devices, its Lumia range has produced decent hits. On the other hand there’s HTC which is yet to see immense success with any one of its WP8 device. Rumor has it that HTC is likely to move away altogether from Microsoft’s mobile platform.

Before Microsoft and Nokia signed a billion dollar deal making Windows Phone the default OS on Nokia smartphones, HTC was the biggest vendor of Windows Phone device. Now it accounts for roughly 5 percent of all WP8 devices, as opposed to Nokia which has the lion’s share of 80 percent, followed closely by Samsung in second place. Digitimes cites sources based in Taiwan who claim that HTC might move away from WP8 and focus even more than it is already doing on development of Android devices. One reason cited for this change is HTC’s desire to gain more share in the global smartphone market, and given Android’s popularity, the move seems perfectly logical. Does his mean HTC will stop making WP devices altogether? Presumably not, the company hasn’t dropped any such hint as yet.

Nokia Lumia 1080 may aim for Galaxy Note III’s lunch this Fall

Another wave of rumors surrounds Nokia’s (unconfirmed) plans for a next-generation “phablet” sized device in the near future, currently code-named Nokia Lumia 1080. This name would fit right in with the Nokia Lumia 1020, a device revealed just this past month and released to AT&T with a 41-megapixel camera in tow. Releasing a device with […]

Windows Phone 8 GDR3 Update Reportedly Being Tested

Windows Phone 8 GDR3 Update Reportedly Being TestedWhile Microsoft’s Windows Phone GDR2 update has yet to fully roll out to all Windows Phone devices, it seems that according to The Verge’s Tom Warren, Microsoft is already testing their Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update. For those wondering what’s the difference, the GDR2 update basically brings about some improvements and few features, but with the GDR3 update, it is expected to bring about new hardware support in the form of 1080p Full HD displays along with quad-core processors and is supposed to roll out later this year, at least that’s what we hope.

With the GDR3 update, Microsoft’s Windows Phone offerings should be able to stay on par with Android’s hardware, at least on paper. In any case we guess this isn’t too surprising especially if Microsoft wants to stay in the smartphone game, although sometimes the number of cores your phone has may not matter, but we suppose it looks good on paper from a marketing standpoint. In any case we have also heard that Nokia is working on a phablet with a Full HD display, so we expect that they would need this update for it to work. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled for more updates.

Both the Nokia Lumia 521 (as […]
