Fixes coming for Skype Messaging on Windows Phone; improved device syncing also in the works

If you’ve used Skype on Windows Phone, chances are you’ve dealt with out-of-sync and missed messages. Luckily, a fix is on the horizon: according to Skype product manager Jeff Kunins, who spoke with The Verge, Microsoft is aware of the issues and working to resolve them. Part of the problem, it seems, stems from Microsoft’s move from peer-to-peer networks for Skype to cloud-based servers.

Once the hiccups are fixed, users can expect syncing across devices to avoid any random bursts of old, already-read messages. Kunins also said that continuous notifications will run only on the device you’re currently using, as opposed to every Skype-running gadget you own. Few things are more headache-inducing than five different devices ringing at once, after all. Finally, Kunins hinted that the Skype app for Windows 8.1 will have “a lot of fun things” to offer. Stay tuned.

Nokia Lumia 1520 Review

You’re to blame for the vast Nokia Lumia 1520. “Make a phablet” we kept asking Nokia, “give us a big Windows Phone to compete with the Galaxy Note.” That Nokia – and Microsoft – went off to the drawing board and returned with a hand-dominating 6-inch monster is a juicy sort of irony, then: this […]

Instagram For Windows Phone 8 Launches Today Without Ability To Take Pictures

Instagram For Windows Phone 8 Launches Today Without Ability To Take Pictures

We reported yesterday that it is likely that Instagram for Windows Phone 8 is going to be released soon, as there’s evidence to suggest that the app has already been submitted for approval. The app is going to be released today, but it is missing a number of crucial features that are found on the apps for rival platforms. Unfortunately, Instagram is only being released for Windows Phone 8, users on legacy Windows Phone devices will not get the app. It is slated to go live around 2 p.m. ET.

Instagram for Windows Phone 8 will offer Live Tiles on the Start screen which will refresh periodically and display updated data, the app also has support for fast-resume. It is missing one particularly important feature though, the ability to take pictures within the app. Users won’t be able to capture images using Instagram prior to sharing, they’ll have to pick out images to share from the device’s gallery. Other missing features include video capture and upload as well as photo tagging. Instagram says that in order to get the app out as soon as possible, these features had to be sheleved. However, it confirms to Engadget that these features will be added to the app through future updates. How long that will end up taking is not known at this point in time.

Microsoft Office Remote App For Windows Phone 8 Launched

Its not always easy to make a presentation in a room full of people, whether you’re in a boardroom and the stakes are quite high or you’re in class talking about the solar system, you would want the presentation to go as smoothly as possible. The Microsoft Research and Office engineering teams have collaborated to develop a new app that’s likely to be of immense help during presentations. Called the Office Remote app, it turns the Windows Phone 8 device into a smart remote which can be used to interact with Office on your PC. At this point in time, the app has only been released for Windows Phone 8, Microsoft hasn’t said when we can expect it to be released on iOS and Android.

Through the app, users can control Word, Excel and PowerPoint from any corner of the room, thus freeing them up to walk about during the presentation. Whether its advancing slides, controlling an on-screen laser pointer or scrolling through a lengthy document, the app has got your covered. The app is compatible with all versions of Office 2013 except Office 2013 RT. It requires a Bluetooth enabled PC and that a desktop add-in for Office Remote be installed on the computer. The Office Remote app for Windows Phone 8 is available as a free download from the Windows Store. Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone 8 GDR3 Update Being Rolled Out

Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone 8 GDR3 Update Being Rolled Out

The GDR3 update is the latest Windows Phone 8 update that brings a number of improvements and enhancements. This update has already been rolled out for a few WP8 devices, and now Samsung’s flagship device is finally receiving it. That’s right, Samsung ATIV S, which is the only flagship Windows Phone 8 device from the Korean manufacturer, is now receiving the WP8 GDR3 update.

The biggest improvement that GDR3 brings is support for 1080p displays and faster processors such as the quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. Users won’t be able to make use of this support unless they buy a Windows Phone device that actually has those things, Nokia has a new device out that has a 1080p display. Apart from that, the GDR3 update brings features such as a new driving mode, option to use Wi-Fi for setting up a device, ability to close apps from the multitasking screen as well as the ability to lock orientation of the display to portrait or landscape mode. The update also lets users select custom ringtones for a wide variety of items such as instant messages and calls or texts from certain contacts. Windows Phone 8 GDR3 for Samsung ATIV S is being rolled out in phases, so it might take a while before the update becomes available in your particular region.
