Nokia Lumia 920 “HAAC” Rich Recording microphones confirmed

All eyes may be on the Nokia Lumia 920′s PureView camera, but our ears may well be cosseted with the company’s Rich Recording high-quality audio, judging by what SlashGear has heard from sources at the firm. Nokia made no mention of Rich Recording, the broad-frequency sound capturing system that premiered on the 808 PureView, during its Lumia 920 launch, and nor does the Windows Phone’s spec sheet spill the goods; however, according to hardware details we have been informed about, the Lumia 920 does indeed have a trio of the special microphones Nokia co-developed especially for Rich Recording.

Those “High Amplitude Audio Capture” microphones can record a significantly broader range of frequencies than standard microphones: up to 140 dB in fact, whereas traditional phone microphones top out at 110 dB. Decibels use a logarithmic scale, so that 30 dB difference is vast.

“To cope with high sound pressure levels, Nokia has developed together with microphone suppliers a new microphone concept (High Amplitude Audio Capture) that can capture high sound pressure levels with perceptually no distortion to the audio. It is capable of recording up to 140 dB and higher Sound Pressure Levels, while that commonly used digital microphones can only reach 120 dBSPL without heavy distortion. As high amplitude audio levels are tolerated, there is no need to limit the frequency response. Hence full audio bandwidth to match to human hearing capabilities can be provided when capturing with HAAC microphones” Nokia

The end result is audio more akin to what the human ear can hear, without the distortion common to most smartphone camcorder functionality. The Lumia 920′s three HAAC microphones are in the correct place for the system to work, we’ve been told.

Rich Recording isn’t mentioned by name in the data sheets SlashGear has seen – we’ve been asked not to publish them – but the key software specifications apparently match with those of the 808 PureView as well. We’ll be pestering Nokia for specific confirmation, but until then there’s more on Rich Recording in Nokia’s white paper [pdf link].

Verizon confirms ongoing talks with Nokia for potential tie-up, declines to kiss and tell

Remember that image sent recently by an anonymous tipster showing two versions of the Nokia Lumia 822 nestled comfortably within Verizon’s device management system? Turns out there is something cooking between the Finnish phone maker and Big Red after all. The Wall Street Journal reports that Verizon has confirmed plans involving a Nokia Corp. tie-up, with sources familiar with the deal saying that the companies have been in talks since the spring. Just exactly what it is they’re working on, however, still remains a mystery. Apparently, Verizon and Nokia are playing their cards close to the vest and refusing to disclose specific details about a potential deal. Still, the betting money is on some sort of tie-up involving Nokia’s Lumia line. The Windows 8 handsets have seen a deluge of news this month, mostly involving the new 920 and 820 models. Whatever Nokia’s got planned, several analysts also said the company needs to act fast. With Samsung’s popular Galaxy S III already out and Apple’s new iPhone expected to launch soon, Nokia’s new phones are expected to see some tough competition.

HTC Accord may become the mid-range 8X, make a little more Sense

HTC Accord may be the midrange 8X, make a little more Sense

HTC’s plans for Windows Phone 8 may be filling out fast. We saw XDA-Developer member Football4PDA post a schematic of the Accord less than a week ago, and today he’s posting what could be more concrete information. Supposedly, HTC’s inaugural device might be named the 8X — not quite as charming, but definitely simple. More importantly, the software in the claimed leak suggests the company will bring a trace of Sense UI style to the home screen, rather than having to relegate it to the HTC Hub: a live tile would bring the oversized clock and weather that One owners know so well. Just don’t anticipate a flagship device here. If the specifications are real, the 8X would bear more in common with the Droid Incredible 4G LTE, sharing its 1.2GHz dual-core chip, 8-megapixel rear camera, Beats Audio and NFC while picking up a slightly larger 4.3-inch screen and 16GB of storage. Our main question centers around the unveiling. While HTC has an event lined up for later this month, there’s no guarantee that the 8X will show up at that gathering or even launch side-by-side with Windows Phone 8 itself.

AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 due November 2 squeak insiders

AT&T is targeting a November 2 launch date for Nokia’s new Windows Phone 8 flagship, sources suggest, with the Lumia 920 said to be currently in testing at the carrier. Announced on Wednesday, though with no more specific release timescale than “later in the year,” the Lumia 920 is likely to support LTE on AT&T’s 4G network – Nokia confirmed that there would be LTE and HSPA+ versions of the smartphone – though the goal release date could still slip.

That’s because the phone is currently going through sign-off testing in AT&T labs, according to multiple sources talking to The Verge, potentially complicated by the state of the software. Microsoft has not yet finalized Windows Phone 8, though the company is tipped to be close to that point, and expected to release the OS to manufacturing (RTM) next week.

If that process is delayed – or, indeed, if AT&T comes across any issues during its testing process – the November 2 release might prove unfeasible. European carrier sources have already been whispering about a mid- to late-November release of the handset outside of the US.

What may prove the tipping point, however, is pricing, and that’s something nobody in the know is discussing right now. Nokia and AT&T undercut smartphone rivals in the US with the Lumia 900, by aggressively putting it out at $99.99 with a new agreement, rather than the more traditional $199.99; a similar approach with the Lumia 920 could well make the relatively unknown Windows Phone 8 platform more appealing to consumers in-store.

There’s more on the Lumia 920 in our initial hands-on and our more extended exploration of the Nokia’s new features.

Report: Nokia to begin selling Lumia 920 in November

Just a couple of days ago, we saw how Nokia revealed the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 Windows Phone 8-powered smartphones to the whole world, and we did come across rather impressed with their flagship Lumia 920. There was no announcement on a concrete release date or pricing details at the handset’s debut, although Nokia did mention a rollout before the year 2012 is over. Well, sources at European telecoms operators shared that the Finnish smartphone company has every intention to begin selling their new smartphones in November as part of their efforts to secure the company’s future.

Will the Nokia Lumia 920 be able to catch up with the iPhone from Apple and the slew of Google’s Android-powered smartphones? Only time will tell, as right now, Windows Phone remains a minority in mobile operating system market share. Assuming that the above report is true, then the Lumia 920 would be able to make it in time for the frenzied holiday sales season, but they would definitely face stiff competition from the new iPhone that is touted to be announced on September 12th, not to mention other Windows Phone 8-powered models from HTC and Google’s Motorola Mobility segment. Needless to say, a Nokia spokesperson did not have any comment when approached on the Lumia 920’s alleged release window.

Nokia Lumia 920 on sale in November tip Euro carriers

Nokia’s Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 smartphone will go on sale in November 2012, according to carrier source whispers, with European availability beginning that month. The Finnish phone company declined to specify exactly when its new flagship would hit shelves, saying only that it was due “later in the year,” but according to Reuters various unnamed Euro operators have been quietly confirming the November timeframe.

Exactly when in November appears to be varying by specific country. One eastern European operator exec apparently said that his carrier was counting on the Lumia 920 launching in the second half of the month, though pointed out that “larger countries would receive the model earlier.” Similarly, a Nordic carrier exec also confirmed the mid- to late-November release.

Nokia was coy with its Lumia 920 (and Lumia 820) units at the reveal on Wednesday, refusing to allow any real exploration of Windows Phone 8 because the platform is yet to be officially launched. Microsoft has not officially dated that, nor said when exactly new Windows Phones will be permitted to go on sale.

Still in the air is pricing for Lumia 920, as well as specific carrier partners in different countries. CEO Stephen Elop suggested several months ago that the company intends to work more closely with smaller sets of carriers in each country, in an attempt to mimic what was described as a more successful approach with AT&T in the US market.

More on the Lumia 920 in our full hands-on.

European carrier sources: Nokia to start selling the Lumia 920 in November (update: coming to AT&T on November 2nd)

While we heard practically everything else about Nokia’s new Windows Phone 8 flagship, there were still two very important details still missing — its price and release date. Now, according to Reuters‘ “telecom operator” sources, a spokesperson from an unnamed eastern European carrier said that sales of the PureView-packing Lumia 920 will start in the second half of November, with larger countries landing the device earlier in the same month. Another source from a Nordic operator then followed suit, stating that they expected the phone to arrive in stores around mid to late November. We’ve reached out to our contacts, and will update if we hear anything more — especially if it involves a price tag.

Update: It’s being reported that the Lumia 920 will arrive in the US on AT&T’s network November 2nd.

Windows Phone 8 HTC 8X (aka HTC Accord) details leak

HTC‘s new Windows Phone flagship, until now known as the HTC Accord, will launch as the Windows Phone 8X HTC (aka HTC 8X), according to an insider, complete with a 4.3-inch 720p HD display. The new smartphone, believed to be in the pipeline for a reveal on September 19, will have a 1.2GHz dualcore processor according to tipster Football4PDA, as well as an 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 lens.

That camera will pack autofocus, an LED flash, and 1080p HD video recording. Meanwhile, the front-facing camera will supposedly include an “ultra-wide angle” lens, for better video calls, and – unusually – also record 1080p video.

The 8X will also have Beats Audio, as with other recent HTC devices, together with Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, WiFi, GPS and NFC. Connectivity will include a microUSB port and 3.5mm audio socket, and the phone will use a microSIM just like the HTC One X.

Paired with the 1.2GHz dualcore will be 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, while the OS will of course be Windows Phone 8. Those specs are a little milder than Nokia’s new Lumia 920 flagship, revealed earlier this week, though there’s no telling if HTC has a second Windows Phone to launch at the same event.

Nokia Lumia 920: A Bigger and Better Windows Phone?

Unless you’ve been living in a cabin somewhere near a lake or in the woods, you’ve probably heard about Nokia’s Lumia smartphones. The previous models were pretty good, but Nokia’s upped the ante with the Lumia 920, a week or so before the iPhone 5 is set to be announced.

nokia lumia 920 smartphone

The Nokia Lumia 920 runs Windows Phone 8, packs an 8.7 MP Nokia PureView camera with optical image stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics. Under the hood, it’s got a speedy 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor with 1GB or RAM. Its 1.2 MP 720p front-facing camera will let you video chat with your friends.

The screen looks gorgeous – at 4.5 inches it should do well. Its curved “PureMotion HD+” display offers a crisp 1280 x 768 resolution – even higher res than the iPhone 4S’ 960×640 Retina display. There’s an automatic sunlight reading mode and the ability to sense touch inputs through regular gloves. Its screen will also respond to fingernail touches, which is good for people with longer nails.

The phone comes with 32 GB of built-in storage. Though it doesn’t have a microSD-card slot, so it’s not expandable – though you do get 7GB of SkyDrive online storage as well. It’s equipped with a Qi-compatible wireless charging battery, which is nice and has a 2,000 mAh capacity. The price hasn’t been announced yet, and it will be released in Q4 2012.
