OneNote for Windows 8 gains Office 365 integration, touch keyboard improvements

Hot on the heels of the recent iOS and Android overhaul of OneNote comes an update for the Windows 8 and Windows RT versions which adds Office 365 integration and touch keyboard improvements. The app is available in the Windows Store right now and lets you sign into your Office 365 school or work account and sync notebooks right from within the OneNote app. As for the touch keyboard, it’s both invoked and dismissed by simply tapping into any empty space, which makes it easier to use. This allows you to switch seamlessly between inputting text and finger painting — or basically, just focus on your notes. Hit the source link below for the update.

Surface RT cut goes global as Microsoft chases sales

After yesterday’s discount of the Surface RT becoming official in the US, Microsoft is expanding the price cut globally to various other countries, including the UK and Australia. Microsoft has updated its UK and Australian stores with updated prices for the older Windows tablet to reflect the lower price tag.

Each of these stores now as prices for the entry-level Surface RT at £279 and AU$389, respectively. The US price is at $349 now, which is a $150 drop from its initial price tag of $499. As for the 64GB version, that can be had for just $449, which is also a $150 discount from the original $599 cost.

Prices vary depending on the region, but retailers are also cutting the price down of the aging tablet. Both Best Buy and Staples are discounting the Surface RT, which Staples was the first store to discount the tablet. It’s not said whether or not this is a permanent price cut, but Microsoft’s website doesn’t say otherwise.

The Surface RT hasn’t been the most popular tablet, especially with the newer Surface Pro releasing earlier this year. The Pro seemed like Microsoft’s efforts to cover up the Surface RT, giving users a full desktop experience with the Surface Pro, but it seems they’re still wanting to sell them, considering that numbers have been low for the company.

The price cut could also mean a second-generation Surface tablet is on the way. We’ve already heard several rumors of a refreshed Surface slate that could be arriving this year, and while it was tipped that we would see it at Microsoft’s BUILD conference last month, there’s still time for the company to release a second-gen model before the year’s end.

Dell cites poor tablet sales, but has high hopes for Windows 8 enterprise use

Dell isn’t new to struggles, and it seems the company is continuing its streak of poor sales. Dell’s only two Windows-based tablets, the XPS-10 and Latitude 10, have only combined for “hundreds of thousands” of units sold, according to Sam Burd, who is the company’s vice president of personal computing.

Obviously, those numbers aren’t what investors had in mind, but it goes along with overall expectations of Windows tablets in general, which haven’t been selling so well anyway, but Dell says that they’re really excited about the potential that Windows 8 has in the enterprise space, even though companies are wary of upgrading to new operating systems.

Still, Burd thinks that the future will bode well for Windows 8 tablets and the enterprise market, but he says that “it’s going to take some time, and the jury is still out.” He notes the strong competition with the iPad, but says that “in a few years when we get to Windows 8 tablets being a third or 40% of tablet volume, we can feel [the Windows tablet adoption] happening. Tablets are definitely an important piece of the computing business.”

Microsoft is looking to ramp up Windows 8, though, with a Windows 8.1 update that brings a lot of new features, as well as performance improvements. We ended getting our hands on the new update and very much happy with it for the most part, but Dell and Microsoft both believe that the improvements will help Windows 8 device sales over the next year or so.

However, bringing Windows 8 into the corporate and enterprise world is proving to be a tough task. Many companies have only recently upgraded to Windows 7, so another upgrade to Windows 8 would be a bad move time-wise, but companies are turning Windows 8 away for general computer use, mostly just because of the revamped touch-optimized user interface that really doesn’t work well on devices without a touchscreen. Here’s only hoping that more and more businesses adopt tablets.

Windows RT 8.1 devices slated to offer Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors

Qualcomm is well on its way to getting the Snapdragon 800 processors out there, but in the meanwhile, it has announced support for Windows RT 8.1. Both Microsoft and Qualcomm are working together in the matter, and some time later this year it is expected devices, such as tablets, are going to be rolled out running Windows RT 8.1 and Snapdragon 800 processors.

For its part, Microsoft is going to be rolling out the Window RT 8.1 update in the Windows Store later on this year. Unfortunately, Qualcomm doesn’t say when specifically the new devices running both the hardware and software will start to become available, nor what kind of devices will be rolling out, only that it expects them to start hitting shelves later in 2013.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors, in addition to supporting Windows RT services and features, offer speeds-per-core up to 2.2GHz, USB 3.0 for connectivity, and a multi-mode integrated 3G and 4G LTE modem. The combination of this hardware and software, says Qualcomm, enables the creation of thin devices that run cool, thusly not requiring a fan, while also offering long battery life.

Said Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President of Product Management Luis Pineda: “Qualcomm Technologies is committed to the Windows ecosystem and we are excited to be supporting Windows RT 8.1 with our flagship Snapdragon 800 processors … Snapdragon 800 processors deliver significant performance improvements across the entire SoC along with support for new Windows RT 8.1 features and services.”

Microsoft likewise praised the collaboration, saying that the Snapdragon 800 processors will give Windows customers new advantages over previous offerings, such as “outstanding device performance” and the integrated 4G LTE feature.
