Acer to slow Microsoft focus while increasing Chromebook and Android production

Acer has felt the squeeze brought on by ever-decreasing PC shipments, something that has affected more than a few companies. Eschewing PCs, consumers are gravitating in larger numbers towards mobile devices, particularly tablets, something that resulted in a poor second quarter for the company. In light of this, Acer’s president stated that the company will […]

Microsoft pits Acer Iconia W3 against iPad mini in latest Windows fight

Microsoft has taken on Apple’s iPad mini in its latest head-to-head commercial, pitting the 7.9-inch iOS tablet against Acer’s Iconia W3 and, unsurprisingly since it’s all being paid with Microsoft’s dime, finding the Windows 8 slate to be the winner. The advert, which follows June’s battle between the iPad 4 and Dell’s XPS 10, runs […]

Lenovo Miix 10 arrives as Atom-equipped Windows 8 tablet

This tablet is Lenovo’s latest Windows 8 slate, and it rocks a 10-inch screen with an Intel Atom processor on the inside to keep things […]

Microsoft Surface Pro cuts aim for morale boost in August

It’s not that often when you see a hero product cut down to size, so to speak, less than a year into its lifespan in the wild. What we’ve got here is a reaction to Microsoft’s low sales numbers in both the Surface Pro and Surface (with Windows RT) sales in the first segment of […]

Google Drive for Windows gets desktop shortcuts for speedier editing

Google Drive for Windows gets desktop shortcuts for speedier editing

Google Drive is as much about productivity as cloud storage, but it’s hard to discover this through a cursory glance at Drive’s desktop apps. That connection should soon become clearer, at least for some users — a new version of Google Drive for Windows will create shortcuts to Docs, Sheets and Slides after installation. The editing-friendly aliases should reach Google Drive over the course of the next week. There’s no word of a Mac equivalent, but we’ve reached out to Google and will let you know if a matching update is on the way.

Surface tablet revenue just $853m Microsoft reveals

Microsoft made $853m in revenue from Surface tablets in its 2013 fiscal year, a disappointing figure that failed to even cover the company’s $900m inventory adjustment charge for the poorly selling Surface RT. The figures, confirmed in Microsoft’s most recent 10K filing, paint an underwhelming picture of the Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets, though doesn’t specify exactly how many units have been sold.

Microsoft has been coy on giving those figures out, though that hasn’t stopped industry observers from guesstimating around the company’s sales. In March, sources with unofficial access to the numbers claimed that Microsoft had sold around 1.5m units.

Earlier this month, Microsoft admitted it had taken a $900m hit on inventory adjustment around the Surface RT. The news came just a day after Microsoft slashed the price of the tablet by around $150.

Overall, Microsoft still managed to pull together a rise in Windows revenue for the year, though pushing Surface didn’t help. Sales of the tablets failed to even cover the extra $898m the company spent on marketing them and Windows 8, the 10K reveals.

Next up, so the rumor mill would have it, is a new range of second-gen Surface tablets, still running either Windows RT or Windows 8, with a broader choice of processors. There have also been whispers of LTE-equipped versions, to better take on Apple’s 4G-enabled iPads, along with 7-inch versions to challenge the Nexus 7 and iPad mini.

FEAR Online official, beta sign-ups happening now

The popular horror-themed first-person shooter series FEAR is back, and this time it’s going free-to-play. Aeria Games has announced FEAR Online, an online, free-to-play approach of Monolith’s horror FPS series. FEAR Online will take the singleplayer aspect of the game and turn it into an online multiplayer experience.

The game will be developed by Inplay Interactive and will be available for Windows. The game will feature multiple team-based combat modes with ten different maps to choose from. Teams will consist of up to four players and will take on different kinds of enemies. The game will also bring back Soul King mode found in FEAR 3. This will get players “to possess enemies for new abilities and collect more fallen souls than their opponents.”

The game will continue off from the storyline following Alma Wade (the creepy ghost child), as well as focus on the FEAR elite team and the Armacham Technology Corporation. The game will follow a storyline parallel to that of FEAR 2: Project Origin. FEAR Online should be a nice transition from where gamers left off with the last title.

FEAR was first released back in 2005, and has since seen several expansion packs and sequels, including the Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate expansions, and then the FEAR 2: Project Origin sequel. An expansion of that game was later released, called FEAR 2: Reborn, before FEAR 3 was released in 2011. FEAR Online will reboot the series and bring back up to speed in today’s gaming market. Those interested can sign up for the beta now.

Google Cloud Print gets Windows compatibility outside of Chrome

Image

It should come as no surprise that Google brought Cloud Print to its own offerings first, but now the service is ready to spread its wings a bit. The company announced today that Cloud Printer is coming to Windows apps like Adobe reader, letting you bypass the necessity for Chrome. Using the driver, you’ll be able to see an entry for the service in your usual drop down of networked printers and, if all goes according to plan, print to your heart’s content. More info on the offering can be found in the source link below.

The New SkyDrive Might Be the Best Cloud Storage Yet

SkyDrive in Windows 8.1 has a secret weapon no one’s talked very much about. It’s actually pretty amazing, in that small sort of way that doesn’t change much, but still manages to completely alter how you use something. In fact, it might just make SkyDrive the best cloud service around.
