Israeli donkeys get WiFi-equipped for historical theme park

Israeli asses get WiFiequipped for historical theme park

It’s WiFi for your ass — the animal kind — and it’s only available in Israel. Yes, as unreal and inappropriate as that proposition may seem, an historical amusement park located in the Middle Eastern country will offer tourists the opportunity to tweet, email and upload photos on-the-fly from the back of a burro. Known as Kfar Kedem, or Village of Yore (sounds exciting!), the unique attraction attempts to reenact life from the Common Era’s First and Second centuries, albeit with a healthy dose of wireless internet. So far, only five of the village’s 30 available donkeys are currently outfitted with routers, but park manager Menachem Goldberg’s toying with an expansion to the rest of his “fleet.” Sure, a biblical ren faire might not be your number one vacation destination, but if you’re in the area, there’s no way you can pass up this low-tech ride back in time.

Nikon Coolpix S800c Android-based camera appears in photos

Before the official announcement that this device even exists, Nikon appears to have had a bit of a leak occur with the Coolpix S800c, their first Android-based shooter. This device is expected to have a 4.5-54 mm lens, a 3.5-inch OLED display, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread – and an announcement date of August 22nd. What we’re seeing today thanks to Nikon Rumors is a couple of devices, perhaps iterations of the same model, showing off what this next-generation device will look like.

These images do by all means appear to be legitimate Nikon-made device photos or renderings of the smart camera before its announcement this month. This device appears in three different configurations, two with rounded corners, each of them with a different setup for the logos on the front, and one model that’s a bit more square than the rest. This device appears to have a standard set of buttons for taking photos, zooming in and out, and accessing a gallery of images.

On the back of this device appears to be a display that is indeed running Android 2.3 Gingerbread with little to no modifications made to its build. This device also has a set of three buttons below the screen (when held in portrait mode) that likely attach to back, home, and menu functions. It’s not yet known if this device will be able to connect to mobile data, but it’s quite likely that it’ll be working with wi-fi signals at least.

Have a peek in the timeline below to see additional bits from the recent past from Nikon to gain additional clues on their near future. Android may very well be finding its way into more than one camera soon!

AT&T may discontinue subsidized tablet sales, will still offer slates at full price

AT&T may discontinue subsidized tablet sales, offer slates at full price

Saving a few short-term bucks on a subsidized tablet by inking a two-year contract with AT&T may be a thing of the past. According to a document sent to us by a tipster, Ma Bell will no longer offer discounted, on-contract slates as of August 19th. However, it looks like Big Blue is still happy to offer slabs at standard, no-commitment prices along with DataConnect and MobileShare plans. Head past the break if you’d like to take a peek at the notice in deeper detail.

Motorola schedules press event for September 5th, dubs it the ‘day’s main event’

Motorola schedules press event September 5th

September 5th is going to be a pretty busy day, by the looks of it. While we’ll likely get to see a few Windows Phone 8 devices in Nokia’s Lumia lineup in the morning, Motorola has scheduled a Save the Date for the afternoon. We’re not sure exactly what to expect, though it’s certainly possible we’ll see a Droid RAZR HD or XT907 to balance out whatever Stephen Elop will be showing off. (We especially love the dig at Nokia by saying it’s “the day’s main event.”) We’ll keep you posted as we hear more, and we’ll be there to give you word on the latest and greatest from HelloMoto.

AT&T: FaceTime over cellular feature to be included in Mobile Share plans at no extra charge, not available for other data plans

AT&T FaceTime over cellular will be offered to Mobile Share customers

AT&T is offering a bit of clarification on the rumors involving a standalone feature offering FaceTime over Cellular for an additional charge: the iOS6 feature (due out this fall) will actually be included at no extra cost, but only for those customers who opt for the Mobile Share plans. Anyone on the grandfathered unlimited data plans or traditional tiered offerings will only be able to rely on the good ‘ol WiFi whenever they feel the urge to use Apple’s video chat service. From the looks of it, it seems that AT&T is hoping to conserve the amount of network bandwidth that would be chewed up by unlimited customers, while also having it function as a value-added feature for its newest shared data plans. In terms of usage, this FaceTime capability will use up part of your data allotment (instead of minutes). So, the good news is that the feature is free — the bad news is that it won’t make unlimited users any happier. Find AT&T’s official statement below.

ZTE touts world’s first FD-LTE and TD-LTE mobile hotspot and USB modem

ZTE touts world's first FDLTE and TDLTE USB modem and mobile hotspot

You likely know the uncomfortable feeling when family members refuse to talk to each other, and such is the case with FD-LTE and TD-LTE — two similar but incompatible LTE technologies that’ve gained traction across the globe. Now ZTE is looking to play peacekeeper with its MF820S2 USB modem and MF91S mobile hotspot, each which speak fluently in both LTE languages. While Marvell was the first to accomplish this feat with its modem chipset, ZTE’s two globetrotting products are the first we’re aware of that are ready for retail shelves. That said, both units seem best suited for users based in China, as the fallback technologies include only TD-SCDMA and EDGE. ZTE’s USB modem is said to provide up to 68Mbps connectivity over TD-LTE networks and up to 100Mbps over the FD-LTE counterpart, whereas the mobile hotspot wields a 2,300mAh battery. As always, you’ll find the full PR after the break.

Official Black Ops II gaming headsets unveiled by Turtle Beach, coming ‘weeks’ ahead of game release (hands-on)

Official Call of Duty II gaming headsets unveiled by Turtle Beach, coming 'weeks' before the game handson

The crowds that filed towards the hulking Call of Duty: Black Ops II stand at Gamescom prove it deserved all that floor space and nearby, Turtle Beach was finally showing off its range of companion gaming headphones, ranging from in-ear buds to top-of-the-range wireless gaming cans with some heavy-duty audio customization options in tow. We managed to take a look at the whole selection (which repackages several models from the XP series and the incoming Seven series). While these were still developmental models (the Call of Duty decals will be painted on, not the stickers seen here), it should give you a good idea how the headphones will appear when they arrive in the next few months. We’ve got details on all the headsets (and the press release) after the break.

Smart Communications’ new 4G LTE launch details slip out in Philippines, quickly get pulled

Smart Communications' new 4G LTE launch details slip out in Philippines, quickly get pulled

Mabuhay, Philippines. We’ve covered the Pearl of the Orient Seas’ affinity for electric tricycles, green billboards and a certain cool-looking logo before. This time, it’s all about the Gs as select locations in Metro Manila are apparently in line to get high-speed wireless coverage via a new 4G LTE network being launched by Smart Communications on August 25th. The launch was first reported by Philippines-based site MisterJonjon.com, which has since taken down the post at the company’s request. Areas scheduled to get coverage include parts of financial center Makati as well as locations around the SM Mall of Asia and the University of the Philippines’ Diliman campus, to name a few. The site also reported that Smart will offer customers a Huawei USB LTE stick for free and charge a monthly rate of 3,500 Philippine pesos (about $83). All in all, the company is set to activate 49 LTE base stations during the launch. For more, check out the snapshot of the pulled post through the source link.

[Thanks, Neil]
