HTC 8XT for Sprint: what’s different?

HTC 8XT for Sprint: what's different?

This summer, Sprint’s lineup of Windows Phone 8 devices increased from zero to two. The first to show up in stores was the HTC 8XT ($100 on contract), a modified version of the 8X designed for Sprint customers upgrading from old Windows Phones. Though in many ways it’s a chip off the ol’ block, there are enough differences in the hardware (and to a lesser extent, the software) that it has a personality all its own. So what exactly makes this particular handset sit apart from last year’s flagship? And does it enhance or take away from the original 8X user experience? Keep reading to find out.%Gallery-slideshow73406%

Chromecast iOS setup app arrives in the App Store

Google may have released the Chromecast with support for Android and iOS, however it wasn’t until today that a setup app arrived in the iTunes App Store. This didn’t mean that iOS users were left waiting for the app, but it should make the setup process a bit easier for some. If nothing else, it […]

ParaShoot wearable camera lets you shoot stealthily, monitor on a smartphone

ParaShoot wearable camera lets you shoot stealthily, monitor on a smartphone

GoPros are great, but if you’d rather film discretely without your subjects going into “dude” mode, there’s now the ParaShoot wearable camera on Kickstarter. The idea is to sport the 1.3 ounce device like an amulet or on a belt during your day-to-day activities, so you can shoot 720p, 30fps video whenever a moment strikes. While slight, it still packs features like a 100 degree field of view, built-in imagine stabilization, a microSD slot, USB port, 700mAh battery, automatic recording and WiFi. Finally, unlike other wearable cameras, you won’t be shooting blind thanks the included WP8, iOS and Android app that lets you monitor video and control the ParaShoot. The company’s already doubled its modest $30,000 goal with over a month to go, but if you’d like roll the Kickstarter dice and pre-order, you can still grab one at the source for $149. Delivery’s expected by December this year.

Moto X for Verizon officially available online August 29th, at stores in the coming weeks

Moto X for Verizon officially available online August 29th, in stores in the coming weeks

If you’ve been eyeing a Motorola device on Verizon without the Droid branding, the Moto X is ultimately your best (and only) choice — but when exactly will it be available to the masses? According to Verizon’s official Twitter account, this Thursday, August 29th will be the day you can grab it online for $200 on-contract. As for stores, the company isn’t willing to give a specific date just yet, so all we’ve been told is that we can expect it in the coming weeks. Still, this will come as good news for Big Red fans who have been patiently awaiting their turn, even if it means early adopters have to settle for a black or white option.

Verizon Max promo plan reportedly offers 6GB of data to Edge members for $30

Verizon reportedly launching 6GB Max promo plan to wean us off unlimited data

Verizon clearly wants us to stop using unlimited data, but even its Edge upgrade program isn’t a strong argument for embracing capped plans. The company may soon have a better lure, however: Droid-Life claims to have details of an upcoming, limited-time Verizon Max promo plan that would offer relatively large data buckets to Edge users. Individual subscribers would pay just $30 a month for 6GB of data, or $50 for 8GB with hotspot support. They wouldn’t get to share service between devices, however. Verizon has declined to comment on the apparent leak, but we may hear more about Max in the near future when it’s reportedly launching on August 25th. We’re not convinced that the offer is worthwhile for every unlimited-loving refusenik, but it could soften the blow for those who just can’t resist frequent device upgrades.

Bēm Wireless Boom Box: Boomtooth

There are plenty of Bluetooth boom boxes available, but I have to say that this one from Bēm looks quite interesting. The overall shape is reminiscent of a traditional boom box, and the handle will let you lug it around quite easily from place to place.

The Bēm Wireless Boom Box looks like it belongs in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and it delivers quite a bit of punch for your mobile devices, with a top output of 105dB. It will last 10 hours on a charge, and comes with a 3.5mm audio port to directly connect your devices as well. There are only three buttons on the speaker, play/pause, volume up and volume down.

The Bēm Wireless Boom Box retails for $249.99(USD), and it’s available in black or white.

Motorola Droid Ultra review: a phone that doesn’t need to exist

Motorola Droid Ultra review the phone that never needed to exist

After roughly nine months of almost complete radio silence, Google-owned Motorola suddenly sprang into action by announcing four devices in the space of eight days. The lineup of new smartphones included the much-hyped Moto X and a fresh crop of Droid-branded handsets for Verizon. Interestingly enough, this quadruplet shares many of the same specs; aside from exterior design, screen and battery size, there’s very little to distinguish Motorola’s latest offerings. The first out of the gate is the Droid Ultra, a 5-inch 720p model wrapped in Kevlar. All told, it’s more of a mid-range phone, though its on-contract price of $200 would suggest otherwise.

The Droid Ultra is arguably the closest cousin to the Moto X, and because the two have basically the same specs and price, we’ve been scratching our heads trying to figure out why Motorola needed to make both. Still, we did our due diligence in giving the Ultra the full review treatment. How does it differentiate from Moto’s flagship, and does it hold any sort of advantage? Is the device worth paying $200 and agreeing to a two-year contract? Read on as we answer these questions and more. %Gallery-slideshow73296%
