Microsoft Executes Xbox 360 Price Cuts

This article was written on September 08, 2008 by CyberNet.

We’ve known for quite some time that Microsoft was preparing to drop the prices of their various Xbox 360 consoles and now it has happened (although only in the U.S.). This comes at a convenient time shortly before the start of the holiday season, and they’ve managed to get the price down to the “sweet spot” for gaming consoles. The sweet spot is under $199 which is what their Arcade version will be selling for.

With the drop in price, we immediately thought of the fact that the Xbox 360 can be used as a media center extender. After looking at other media center extenders available, the Xbox 360 Arcade version is now one of the most affordable options for those who want to extend the capability of their Media Center PC’s. Some of the most popular options like the Linksys DMA2100 or the D-Link DSM-750 both cost around $250 while the HP x280n MediaSmart Connect will run about $350. While the Arcade version of the Xbox 360 doesn’t come with a hard drive (neither does the Wii), it is still a great value at the new price of $199.

The complete line-up of pricing for the Xbox 360 is:

    • Xbox 360 Arcade – $199.99
    • Xbox 360 – $299.99
    • Xbox 360 Elite – $399.99

Microsoft now offers the most affordable gaming console on the market, even cheaper than the Wii. Could this possibly mean that Nintendo will consider dropping the price of the Wii before the holiday season and their two-year anniversary? We’re doubtful because even today, some people are still having a hard time getting their hands on one.

So, what do you think? Is the Xbox 360 Arcade version a great bargain at $199.99 even though it comes with no hard drive?

Microsoft Workin’ on a Wiimote Clone for Xbox 360?

This article was written on April 08, 2008 by CyberNet.

The latest rumor and speculation around the Internet regarding the Xbox 360 is that Microsoft is developing a “Wiimote” like controller for the system. This information comes from an MTV News Report that talked about the controller and how it would have four face buttons, an analog stick and a microphone. They article reads:

If everything goes according to plan, Microsoft’s response to Nintendo’s Wii will appear before the end of the year, a developer who has been briefed on the project told MTV News. The Xbox 360 manufacturer has been working on its own version of the motion-controlled Wii remote since last summer, the developer said.

The developer that MTV spoke with also sketched out a reproduction of the last prototype that he had seen which looks like this:

    xbox wiimote clone

We’ve seen how successful the Wii has been, partially because of its controller and so it makes sense that Microsoft would want to introduce a new type of controller for the Xbox 360 that involved motion.  A blog entry over at SeattlePI.com talks about how this rumor is highly plausible.  The author said he knew that Microsoft was developing at least four different accessories (they’re money-makers) for the system that were to launch in 2008 and this controller could very likely be one of them. He also mentioned that in the past, Microsoft had job postings seeking someone who had experience with motion sensors.

Of course this is just a rumor so it shouldn’t be taken too seriously yet, however this does sound like something Microsoft would want to do and we wouldn’t be surprised in the least if it’s launched before the holiday season.

WWE Network Headed to Game Consoles, PCs and Mobile

I haven’t watched a wrestling match since the days of André the Giant and the Hulkster back in the 80′s. I know tons of people still like the WWE and spend lots of money to see the wrestling matches in person and on pay-per-view. I’ve also seen those events on the PPV schedule and they are anything but cheap. At CES 2014, the WWE announced the pending launch of a new streaming network.

    wwe network 2 620x340magnify

The network is called the WWE Network and it will be available on tablets, smartphones, PCs, Macs and game consoles starting on February 24. I think most people will watch the WWE Network on their PS3, PS4, or Xbox 360 on the big screen in the living room. WWE says that an app for the Xbox One will come later.

The service is slated to cost $9.99(USD) per month with a six month contract. For the money, you will get access to 1500 hours of archived content for on-demand streaming at launch. You will also get access to all 12 live PPV events, including WrestleMania. If you were going to watch those events anyway, you might save some money with a subscription to the WWE Network.

If you’re interested in finding out more about what the WWE Network includes, check out their FAQ here, or view a service demo here.
