Xbox Music Update For Windows Phone 8.1 Coming Next Week

Xbox Music Update For Windows Phone 8.1 Coming Next Week

Earlier this week Microsoft released Windows Phone 8.1 developers preview. The software itself was unveiled at BUILD 2014 and even though its not going to officially roll out until summer, Microsoft is letting developers and anyone with a compatible device toy around with the preview. Those who had installed it felt that the Xbox Music app needed some work. Microsoft has heard them. Redmond has confirmed that an Xbox Music update for Windows Phone 8.1 is going to be released next week.

Over on Microsoft Answers the company has even posted a changelog of the update. First and foremost it will come with numerous stability fixes which should take care of the many reported black screens. Cortana integration in the app will be improved and it will support playing playlists by name. The user interface will be polished, with improved transitions and animations between UI views. Other improvements include background initial sync of local and cloud content as well as improved messaging for encountered errors.

The company has also confirmed that bi-weekly updates will also be released after the first update is rolled out next week. These will include Live Tile integration, user experience and Quickplay improvements as well as continued focus on stability and performance. Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore has already confirmed that this updated app will be available for all users of Windows Phone 8.1 developer preview.

Annual Xbox Music Pass Nicks You A Free Lumia 520/Lumia 521

Annual Xbox Music Pass Nicks You A Free Lumia 520/Lumia 521We know that we have put the jolly season of Christmas behind us for over a month already, but this does not mean that the spirit of generosity should be stamped out altogether! No sir, Microsoft certainly does not think along that line, and they have in fact introduced a mouthwatering proposal – by giving away a contract-free Nokia Lumia 520 or Nokia Lumia 521 for free as long as you decide to pick up a 12-month Xbox Music Pass. This will not be an ongoing offer indefinitely, since it is part of a limited time promotion. Hence, the usual disclaimers apply here – early bird gets the early worm and all that jazz.

Xbox Music For Android Gets Offline Playback Support

Xbox Music For Android Gets Offline Playback Support

Earlier this week Microsoft launched its new iOS app for the Xbox Music streaming service. The new update brought one major feature, the ability to play music offline. This was welcome news for those who signed up for Xbox Music Pass, as they can now access their songs even when they’re not connected to the internet. Microsoft has now added the feature in the Xbox Music app for Android as well. The update, released today, comes with support for offline playback of playlists. Previously both apps required users to be constantly connected to the internet if they wanted to stream music.

Turning on this feature isn’t that hard. A toggle is displayed on each playlist through which users can decide which playlist is to be made available for offline listening. Its actually quite similar to the way playlists are pinned in Google Play Music. Once done, the entire playlist is available for offline streaming, allowing users to listen to their music even if they’re on board a plane or simply somewhere where there is no internet, even in these modern times, that can happen quite frequently. The updated Xbox Music app for Android is available as a free download, it is live now on the Google Play Store.

Microsoft Launches iOS App Update For Xbox Music Streaming

Microsoft Launches iOS App Update For Xbox Music StreamingMicrosoft has just launched its new iOS app update for the Xbox Music streaming service, although it would see the introduction of just one feature in this particular update. While one update might sound like a paltry amount, this does not mean that it is of no use at all. No sir, this update is a big one, where the new 2.0.31213 version of Xbox Music on the iTunes site will now allow users to be able to listen to their playlists while they remain offline. This will certainly be more than welcome news for those who sign up for the Xbox Music Pass, where they can now access their songs should there be no online connection available at that point in time.

As at press time, we do know that the Android version of the app has yet to receive such an update that will boast of this particular feature. This particular update for the iOS app is a positive move by Microsoft as the software giant works to expand the reach of the Xbox Music service in recent memory. Heck, there was even a web-based version that was launched sometime last year. For those who have yet to enjoy the iOS app for Xbox Music streaming, now might be a good time to start.

Xbox One Supports Free Xbox Music Streaming With The Occasional Ad

Xbox One Supports Free Xbox Music Streaming With The Occasional Ad

November is finally here, the month in which Microsoft releases the hotly anticipated Xbox One console. Gamers who’ve got their pre-orders in would no doubt be crossing off each day on the calendars, while a lot of people are expected to line up outside retailers come launch day to get their hands on the new console. Albert Penello, head of product planning for Xbox One at Microsoft, has confirmed that the company has moved to the ad-supported free streaming model for Xbox Music on the upcoming console.

Penello revealed through Twitter that Xbox One owners won’t have to subscribe to Xbox Music, they’ll be able to streaming music for free but will “get periodic Ads.” Even though streaming music is free, console owners will need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to access the app. This is quite a change from the current subscription model on the Xbox 360. Microsoft already allows Xbox Music for Windows 8.1 and the web users to stream music for free with the occasional ad, so its basically bringing the Xbox One in line with those variants. Penello hasn’t clarified if Xbox 360 owners will get free access to the ad-supported Xbox Music service somewhere down the line, hopefully this bit will be cleared up by the company soon.

Linkin Park Releases “A Light That Never Comes” Single On Xbox Music

Linkin Park Releases “A Light That Never Comes” Single On Xbox MusicIt was just last week when Microsoft decided to roll out both iOS and Android apps for Xbox Music, a move which many see as a major expansion of its service. Well, it certainly did not take too long before a famous name is dropped – with rock band Linkin Park leading the way, having debuted their latest single that is called “A Light that Never Comes” on Xbox Music. It does seem to be the only place which folks are able to listen to it legally for the coming two weeks though.

According to Mike Shinoda, the lead rapper and co-vocalist of Linkin Park, the band’s relationship with Microsoft began when Halo tournaments were held on the original Xbox, before this relationship developed further as the team worked to develop a music making application known as Stagelight, where that included support for touchscreens on Windows 8. Shonida expanded, “In working on Stagelight, I was introduced to Microsoft in a way that was surprising and intriguing. With new Windows devices that come with touchscreens, I saw a potential for the future of music writing, recording, and mixing–I envisioned these computers as the hub of the studio environment, augmenting or replacing the classic mixing consoles that currently eat up the studio space. As we met various people at Microsoft, I was inspired by the passion and creativity behind their innovations.” [Press Release]

Xbox Music For iOS And Android Being Prepped

Xbox Music For iOS And Android Being PreppedIt seems that the Xbox Music subscription music streaming service will be expanded to work on rival mobile platforms – namely iOS and Android, where it will also feature a free Web player that will obviously cost you nary a single cent because it will be ad supported. Microsoft hopes to further expand the reach of their Xbox Music streaming service through the launch of corresponding apps via the iOS and Android mobile operating systems.

In the past, Xbox Music was only available only to users of devices that ran on the Windows platform, but it seems that the service would now enable users of both Android and iOS devices to be able to subscribe, where in turn they would receive unlimited access to their preferred music via the Xbox Music Pass. This Xbox Music Pass will retail for $9.99 per month, or $99.99 per year, depending on the length that suits you better. The Web player, as mentioned earlier, will be on an ad-supported basis, or you can take the ad-free route by forking out a little bit of dough. Users of the free Web service will be able to enjoy on-demand access to 30 million songs, now how about that for variety, eh?
