White Xbox One Spotted

We have had our fair share of stories concerning the upcoming Xbox One console from Microsoft, which I cannot help but wonder why they could not have picked a different name. After all, there is the HTC One flagship smartphone […]

Xbox One white dev console shown off: white is the new black

We’ve already seen the black version of the Xbox One, obviously, and that’s all we’ve been treated with recently. However, seeing as how the Xbox 360 has been available in both white and black, it would make sense for the Xbox One to go the same route, right? Well, it seems that may actually happen, thanks to a photo posted by a developer that reveals a white Xbox One developer console.

The white dev console could mean that a white version of the Xbox One will be on the way at some point, but no one really knows whether or not it’ll be available at launch or if it’ll come later in the console’s life cycle, similar to how a black Xbox 360 showed several years after the console’s initial launch.

The photo was originally posted on Reddit, and another developer chimed in to say that “the zebra ones were also earlier devkits. We’ve gone through several revisions since the original alpha kit (giant server case) and the current one we have looks like the launch version.” By “zebra”, he’s referring to dev kits that were in both black and white (these we probably see hit retail).

Overall, the white dev kit shown in the photo looks practically identical to the black version that we’ll see at launch, save for the power button, which is slightly different in this case, as well as the missing chrome trim around the disc slot. It seems that a white version is set for primetime, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft waited a bit before adding a new color to the lineup in order to boost sales.

Xbox One first-party games priced at £50 in the UK, versus $60 in the US

Xbox One firstparty games priced at 50 in UK, versus $60 in the US

Take the $59.99 official price (before tax) for first-party Xbox One titles in the States, run it through your favorite currency convertor and you get something like £39. Add in Royal Baby taxes (aka VAT), incomplete globalization and whatever else, and it seems the final amount for UK buyers comes to £49.99 — a price tag that has appeared on games like Dead Rising 3 and Forza Motorsport 5 over at Microsoft’s UK web store. It’s not a surprising figure, and not too dissimilar to current Xbox 360 RRPs either, but it still seems high in a world that has seen Steam’s sales model bring prices down for PC gamers. Anyway, maybe it’s better not to get into all that again.

Xbox One Records Last Five Minutes Of Gameplay

Its no secret that gamers like to brag about their achievements, and perhaps having evidence of that would help them easily substantiate their claims. Keb Lobb from Microsoft Game Studios clarified at the San Diego Comic-Con that Xbox One will continually […]

Xbox One to record last five minutes of gameplay

We’ve known for awhile now that the Xbox One will be able to record your gameplay and upload those cool moves to YouTube for the world to see, but details as to how exactly that would work have been scarce so far. However, it’s been revealed that Microsoft‘s new console will save the last five minutes of gameplay at any one time.

Microsoft Studios creative director Ken Lobb said during San Diego Comic-Con this week that the Xbox One will save the last five minutes of gameplay, so whenever you hit the button to save a video after made an amazing catch in Madden, the console will bring up the last five minutes from the time you pressed the button.

From there, you can edit the footage and upload it to YouTube. Plus, the feature works both on and offline, meaning that you don’t need an internet connection to utilize the recording feature. Having this recording feature present means that the console is constantly recording your game play, and the last five minutes are saved locally to the console’s hard drive, with anything over five minutes being erased automatically.

Lobb notes there are a couple of methods to access footage. You can tell the Xbox One to grab the last 30 seconds of footage and save it, or you can finish a match and revisit the last five minutes after the game is over. As far as editing capabilities go, gamers will be able to add voiceover, picture-in-picture, and even footage from the Kinect‘s camera.

This obviously a great feature, as you’ll never have to decide when you should start recording and when you should pause it, because you never know when you’ll get lucky with an amazing spin move while in game. The constant recording from the Xbox One fixes this. However, this is far less than the PS4‘s 15-minute record time, which will save much more video footage from gameplay.

Forza 5 Xbox One install backtracked, won’t require download right away

Last week, it was said that Forza Motorsports 5 for the Xbox One would require a day-one download that gamers would be required to obtain before they’d be able to play the game. This was confirmed by Turn 10 Studios’ Dan Greenawalt. However, he’s back with a new policy, saying that gamers will eventually need to download the extra content, and they’ll be able to play the game even before downloading said content.

This is certainly good news for those who were planning to buy Forza 5 on release day, as you won’t need to connect to Xbox Live right away before you can start enjoying the game. Gamers will be able to begin playing the game, but in order to get the full experience, you’ll be required to download the additional content.

The download consists of extra cars and tracks, as well as additional Drivatar data that “contains enough Drivatars to cover all difficulty settings.” However, Greenawalt notes that “the vast majority of the launch content is contained on the disc,” meaning that gamers will get to enjoy most of the game without downloading the extra content at first.

Greenawalt continues, saying that “the gameplay is not blocked while downloading the additional content; it’s done in the background just like disc install.” While Drivatar is a huge feature in Forza 5, the disc itself contains some Drivatar data to get you going. For example, “in the beginning of the game, the player will be racing against Drivatars that are contained on the disc and were trained by the [Turn 10 development] team.”

However, gamers will eventually have to connect to the internet to download the additional content, since “deeper areas in the career mode were designed to utilize these additional cars and tracks.” Greenawalt says this is similar to previous version of Forza, in the sense that the games came with additional content that was to be downloaded, on top of the initial disc.

Let’s Stop Pretending the Kinect Is A Gaming Device

When I look around the technology space, I can’t think of any single product that is so poorly associated with another device than Microsoft’s Kinect. The sensor, which is supposedly designed with gamers in mind, actually delivers very little value to gamers nowadays. In fact, the Kinect is designed for computers and entertainment – gaming is an afterthought.

kinecta

Since its release years ago, the Kinect has been bundled with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and will make a showing in the Xbox One box. Microsoft, meanwhile, continues to pretend that the Kinect is a great tool for gamers who want to get more out of their titles.

Unfortunately, a few game developers have helped Microsoft extend this myth. Electronic Arts, for example, used the Kinect in all kinds of ways in its last version of Madden NFL. But after the novelty wore off and wives got tired of their husbands calling an audible in the middle of the night, gamers went back to their controller and stopped the nonsense.

xbboxkinect-580x166

Let me be clear: Microsoft’s Kinect is by no means a bad product. In fact, it’s arguably one of the most sophisticated devices on the market, and one that’s worth trying out for just about anyone. But to say that it’s a gaming product ignores the true value of the device and what it can offer to tech lovers around the world.

“To say that it’s a gaming product ignores the true value of the device.”

As Microsoft showed with its Xbox One presentation, the Kinect thrives as an entertainment device. Its support for voice commands means controlling devices and entertainment is simple. And with a few waves of a hand, the Kinect can perform all kinds of functions for those who need a more intuitive experience. Gaming, meanwhile, never comes into play.

On the PC side, the Kinect is even more compelling. The device is being used by developers in all kinds of interesting ways, including allowing folks who are used to the mouse and keyboard to enjoy a more intuitive experience when interacting with Windows. More entertaining developers have found ways to leverage its camera for all kinds of fun tricks.

Meanwhile, developers continue to bundle some Kinect functionality into their video games. However, the vast majority of those installations have proven to be unnecessary add-ons that lack innovation and uniqueness and seem like they were tacked on for the sake of placating Microsoft.

The Wii’s dramatic rise and fall should prove to us all that while motion gaming was fun for awhile, it’s yet another idea that has been ignored by savvy gamers.

Getting more out of consoles, however, is not something that savvy gamers mind. In fact, it’s what they’re coming to expect. And in that regard, the Kinect is delivering. The device is the ideal living room companion, the best alternative to a remote, and is quickly becoming a gateway to entertaining content.

In other words, the Kinect has less and less to do with gaming each passing day.

Analyst Believes PS4 And Xbox One Will “Revitalize” The Games Market

While mobile gaming is definitely not something developers and publishers should snub, especially given how freemium games like Candy Crush are pulling in $633,000 a day from in-app purchases, it does not mean that more traditional forms of gaming, such […]
