Yahoo Poaching YouTube Stars, Working On Rival [Report]

It has long been rumored that Yahoo is interested in taking on YouTube. Apparently the company was looking into acquiring a major chunk of Dailymotion, but the deal is said to have been blocked by the French government. Yahoo might have given up on purchasing a majority stake, but its ambitions of taking on YouTube haven’t died down. Re/code reports that Yahoo is building its very own YouTube rival, and it may hurt Google’s video giant where it hurts in the process.

    Yahoo Widgets Gets Some Love

This article was written on November 29, 2007 by CyberNet.

It looks like Yahoo has spent some considerable time designing an all new homepage for their Yahoo Widgets, and I must say, it looks good! They wanted to improve the experience, and that they did. They’ve also launched a new version of Yahoo! Widgets (Konfabulator) version 4.5 which has new features and some fixes. You can find the upgrade for that here.

One big change with the newly redesigned homepage is that searching is faster, and the results you get seem to be more related to what you’re actually looking for. The widget homepage also has a quick way to browse by displaying top rated widgets (like mini iTunes Remote, and iTunes Bar) as well as a list of new ones. Additional features include:

    • Rate widgets on a 1-5 star scale
    • Vote for widgets if they are “beautiful,” “useful,” or “fun”
    • More info on what each widget does so you’ll know before downloading if you want it
    • An improved comment system makes commenting and reading comments easier
    • Some widgets have been improved/more to choose from

     yahoo widget engine

Among changes with the Widgets engine is support for HTML and Flash. That means that developers are now able to code their widgets in Flash and HTML. Additionally, users will be able to use some of their Netvibes widgets as Yahoo widgets (thanks to Netvibes’ UWA) which is a nice touch. Overall, I’d say Yahoo gets two thumbs up on this one!

Maps & Directions in Your Firefox Sidebar

This article was written on September 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

    Google Maps Sidebar for Firefox

I find myself frequently mapping sites to figure out how to get from point A to point B, and today I’ve got an extension that will speed up the process even more. The extension is called Minimap Sidebar Extension, and it’s entire purpose is make viewing a map an unobtrusive and efficient process.

After installing the extension I found a site that had an address listed, and then dragged it over into the "drop zone" located in the sidebar. From there it mapped the address, and in just a few clicks I could get directions to that location. And you don’t have to worry about which mapping service it uses because it supports all of the big ones out-of-the-box: Google, Yahoo!, and Windows Live Local.

Here’s a list of the features it has:

    • Drag and drop addresses, KML files (for Google Earth), or links that you want to be mapped
    • Maps can be open in the sidebar or in a new tab
    • Stores a list of addresses for future access
    • Get the coordinates of a map
    • Embed the map
    • Automatically discover geoURL’s and in-line geotags
    • Three views: Map, Satellite or Hybrid
    • Works with Google, Yahoo!, and Windows Live Local mapping services to get directions to/from an entry and/or set a locally stored ‘Home Address’

This extension is really only for people who use maps frequently…if you hardly map anything you’ll probably forget to use the extension the few times it would probably come in handy. One thing that came to mind when seeing this is that it would really be useful when planning out vacations and looking for hotels/attractions.

    Yahoo Purchases Vizify

Yahoo Purchases Vizify Yahoo has been in the spotlight recently, having cut off access to services for Google and Facebook log-ins. This time around, one of the early dot com giants who are still hanging around today has picked up another company known as Vizify, making this the 37th purchase for Yahoo ever since the company’s new CEO, Marissa Mayer, came on board in July a couple of years ago. The whole idea behind Vizify’s acquisition was to ‘bring a more visual approach to data’. As to whether this acquisition will be able to send more people flocking over to Yahoo’s services remain to be seen.
