Yahoo to free up usernames after a year of inactivity

Unless you’re quick to sign up with new services, snagging a simple user ID with your name, or just about any word from the English dictionary, can be unlikely. If you’re only first joining Yahoo today (for one reason or another), however, registering any account without a handful of random numbers tacked on at the end is downright impossible. That’ll soon change. The internet giant has announced on Tumblr that come July 15th, IDs that have been inactive for more than a year will be released to the public, giving shoegurlmary1992@yahoo.com a chance to snag mary@yahoo.com, for example. The decision seems perfectly reasonable to us. We only hope that other sites (Twitter) follow suit.

Add this to Apple’s string of revelations at this year’s WWDC: the company has just divulged its 2013 Design Awards winners, comprising of a variety of iPhone, iPad and Mac apps that it deems to be a cut above the rest. This year’s list includes note-taking app Evernote, Yahoo Weather and two stellar entries by student developers. This is also the first time Apple has required young developer scholarship applicants to submit apps that detail their lives and backgrounds in technology, out of which the company chose three standout submissions. Nokia Chat 11 beta lets friends send contacts through NFC

While chat apps excel at adding contacts from the online world, they don’t cope so well with real life — reciting and typing screen names isn’t very elegant. Nokia is bringing back some of those social graces with its Nokia Chat 1.1 beta, which revolves around NFC transfers. If both friends own NFC-equipped Lumia phones, they can tap to exchange their own details, other contacts or even the app itself. It’s also easier to share locations: contacts with Lumias will see a Here Maps-based preview of any given place. These additions don’t make as much sense outside of an all-Nokia ecosystem, but there’s certainly enough for existing users to upgrade at the source link.

Yahoo gives search a redesign, unveils Googleesque nav bar

Yahoo has been a busy little bee recently, updating its various properties and snatching up new ones. Now its giving its Bing-powered search page a facelift. The redesign is actually quite subtle. The color scheme remains the same and there’s still a sidebar, though, the various search tabs have all been pushed to the left rail. The look is flatter, boxier and more modern with quite a bit of empty space. In fact, the padding on the right side has been expanded, leaving much of the screen strangely bare. In addition to the updated aesthetics, the company has introduced a new navigation bar that sits glued to the top providing shortcuts to the homepage, your mailbox, Flickr and other Yahoo-owned properties. The nav bar will also be rolling out to these other services soon, providing a Google-esque way to quickly hop around. Now Yahoo just needs to figure out how to serve up actually useful results. When our search for sushi on Staten Island turned up only one restaurant actually in the borough and a query for “old fashioned recipe” spit out a pile of pancake plans, we knew that there was still quite a lot of work to be done.

PSA: Yahoo Mail Classic shuts down June 3rd

Yahoo’s been on a bit of a warpath lately, shuttering old services and streamlining existing ones — the firm classic email interface, slated to discontinue tomorrow, June 3rd, is the latest to get the axe. We knew this was coming, of course, but its more than a mere visual update: users who choose to upgrade to the new interface will have to agree to Yahoo’s updated Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Yahoo’s own help documentation points out why this matters, explaining that the new ToS includes “the acceptance of automated content scanning and analyzing of your communications content, which Yahoo users to deliver product features, relevant advertising and abuse protection.”

Nothing new for Gmail users, but a change worth consideration. The company says users can opt out of contextual advertising or otherwise dodge it with a desktop email client, but will still need to accept the new ToS to continue using Yahoo Mail.
