Yahoo Picks Up Astrid, The To-Do App

Yahoo Picks Up Astrid, The To Do AppSome folks swear that life is made a whole lot easier if one were to carry around a to-do list, and I do not deny the possibility that a to-do list would help the unorganized get more organized. Well, the paper-based to-do list has certainly been “ported” over with the smartphone and tablet revolution, where we have seen our fair share of apps to help you stay organized. Astrid is one such app, and old school Internet giant Yahoo has picked them up.

Of course, this acquisition would mean that Astrid will continue to offer support for the task management app over the course of the next 90 days, although it is expected that some users could be on the receiving end of refunds where paid subscriptions are concerned. Yahoo issued a statement on this acquisition, saying, “We’re excited to welcome Astrid to Yahoo!’s mobile team. Their background in personalized mobile experiences is impressive, and we know they will be a huge asset to as we continue to re-imagine our products.” First Summly, then Astrid, what company would Yahoo buy next?

Yahoo acquires Astrid, plans to shut the service down

Yahoo has made another acquisition, this time of time management service Astrid, which just made the announcement on its blog. Such a move comes at a time when Yahoo has been buying up a variety of services and apps, a move in part to bolster the company. Not many details about the deal were provided, but those we do know we have for you after the jump.

Says Astrid in the announcement, its team will be joining Yahoo’s mobile team. As a result of the acquisition, the company’s app is going to be shut down in 90 days, with the service effectively putting an end to new premium subscriptions starting today. In addition, it is aiming to make the transition for its users as gentle as possible.

Those who currently use the service will be contacted “shortly” with instructions on how to download their data, which needs to be done within the next three months, after which point it will be gone forever. Says Astrid, its app has been downloaded 4 million times, and that the company is grateful for all of its users, as well as its investors and mentors, which it specifies by name.

This follows Yahoo’s purchase of Summly back in March for the hefty sum of $30 million, one of many moves by the company to boost its mobile-centric goals. The purchase came in the form of 90-percent cash and 10-percent stocks. No financial data was provided on the Astrid acquisition, just a note that Yahoo will refund users who bought an annual subscription set to expire after the service goes down.

Task management app / service Astrid is Yahoo’s latest acquisition

Astrid Tasks and Todo list is Yahoo's latest acquisition

Under new CEO Marissa Mayer, Yahoo has been working on expanding the services it offers across multiple platforms and its latest move on that front is the acquisition of Astrid. The Astrid Tasks and To-do list app is a popular productivity manager on Android and iOS, particularly notable for its tie-ins with Google Calendar and the ability to assign tasks to others. In a blog post, CEO and co-founder Jon Paris announced the company will be joining Yahoo’s mobile team with a goal of “making the world’s daily habits more inspiring and entertaining.” As for existing users, the service will continue to work as-is for 90 days, and those who have paid for annual subscriptions to add on file storage, backup and more can expect refunds from Yahoo. There will also be a way for users to download all their data, although there aren’t any details on that yet. Astrid had received funding from Google Ventures, among others, but as shown by the launch of Google Keep it seems the usual giants in tech will be focusing on in-house ways to offer productivity features.

Yahoo Android App Update Brings Summly Integration

Yahoo Android App Update Brings Summly Integration

Recently Yahoo acquired a mobile news app called Summly, which was developed by a teenager from UK called Nick D’Aloisio, for $30 million. Nick developed Summly when he was 15 years old and now he is one of the youngest self made millionaires in the world. Soon after its acquisition, Yahoo updated its iPhone app with Summly integration. Today they’ve finally brought over the technology to their Android app, which is now available for download.

The new Yahoo app for Android looks a lot like its iOS counterpart. It will offer users the same “visual stream of stories” that it does on the other app. If you’ll be using this app a lot to read up on a variety of topics, chances are you’ll come across something that you’ll want to share. The app has prominent buttons for sharing content to Twitter, Facebook as well as various Android apps. Users can also choose their preferred topics to be shown more information on them. Yahoo has also improved its image, video and Web tabs so that the app can show better search results. The new Yahoo app for Android can now be downloaded from Google Play Store.

France Allegedly Opposed To YouTube Buying Dailymotion Controlling Share

France Allegedly Opposed To YouTube Buying Dailymotion Controlling Share

Last month it was reported that Yahoo was in talks to buy a controlling share in Dailymotion, making it the first expensive acquisition under current CEO Marissa Mayer. This popular video website is said to be worth around $300 million and Yahoo was rumored to be interested in purchasing a 75% share, with an option to completely acquire it in the future. It currently has a minority share in the website. Both Yahoo and Dailymotion had refrained from commenting on this deal, though according to a new report, the deal’s off because the French government is opposed to it.

France has a minority share in France Telecom-Orange which owns this website. Apparently the French Minister of Industrial Renewal is opposed to the idea of a U.S. technology giant taking up such a big share in Dailymotion. French Telecom is reportedly still looking for a partner based in America who will be very helpful in establishing a strong user base for Dailymotion in the country. Only a few days ago Yahoo unveiled its Saturday Night Live deal, which brings some of the best comedy routines and skits. The company has certainly been fighting the perception that hasn’t been too innovative lately. Its hard to believe that, particularly when Yahoo is working so hard to get itself back on track.

Yahoo Japan Launches A Yahoo-branded Thirst Quenching Drink

Yahoo Japan Launches A Yahoo branded Thirst Quenching DrinkYahoo is an internet company probably best known for their search engine services, emails, stock updates, weather updates and more. It is not uncommon for companies to venture outside their core competency, but it looks like Yahoo could be taking a larger detour than expected. It seems that as far as Yahoo Japan is concerned, the company will be launching a drink under the Yahoo Japan branding. We’re not sure how this drink will taste like, but considering that Japan is pretty open when it comes to trying out new flavors and combinations, we expect this Yahoo drink to be welcome with open arms.

The drink will apparently be a thirst quencher, along the lines of Gatorade or Pocari Sweat, just to name a few. The drink will also help Yahoo promote their newly launched web services, such as weather, disasters and a revamped travel section, with the icons of the services being printed on the bottle’s wrapper. There will also be a contest that Yahoo Japan will be running in which customers will stand a chance to win travel packages, digital cameras amongst other prizes. So, anyone interested in a Yahoo thirst quencher?
