Yahoo Mail Updated To Bring Tabs Back

Yahoo Mail Updated To Bring Tabs Back

Back in October Yahoo unveiled a major redesign of Yahoo Mail, its free email service that has over 100 million daily users. Tabs was a feature that was removed in the redesign, because according to the company, tabs confused the users who found them difficult to manage if multiple tabs were opened at any given point in time. So to make multitasking easier, Yahoo replaced them with a Recent view which makes jumping between emails, drafts and search results much more easy. However, Yahoo just published a blog post announcing that tabs have been brought back from the dead, and that they’re a bit smarter this time.

To turn on tabs, Yahoo Mail users need to go to View, Multitasking and click on Tabs. Emails being composed, calendar, contacts and emails being read will all be shown as individual tabs, double clicking on an email in preview pane will open it in a new tab. In the tabs menu, there’s a new option called Preview All which lets Yahoo Mail users see all of the tabs open in grid view which is reminiscent of Apple Exposé. Users now have the option to stick with Recent view if they never liked tabs in the first place, or they can get smarter tabs if they missed them when Yahoo took away tabs.

Leaked Voice-Controlled Personal Assistant Video Not Made By Yahoo

Leaked Voice Controlled Personal Assistant Video Not Made By YahooEarlier today, we brought you word that there was a leaked video which showed off the possibility of Yahoo’s plans for a voice-controlled personal assistant. Well, this particular rumor has more than meets the eye to it, as sources that are close to Yahoo has shared with The Verge that the app shown off in the leaked video itself was not developed by Yahoo.

Yup, did you hear the pin drop? While the leaked video did show off a Yahoo-branded personal assistant app that ran on a smartphone with Android as the mobile operating system of choice, the person, or persons, behind this video is not under Yahoo’s payroll. Of course, this does not mean that we are writing off the possibility of a voice-controlled personal assistant from Yahoo in the long run, especially not after they have purchased SkyPhrase, a company that has its specialty in natural language recognition. In a nutshell, today’s leaked video would prove inconclusive to the big picture, and we do hope that time will tell eventually. Do you think that Yahoo’s foray into the world of Google Now and Apple’s Siri would allow them to be a major player, or will they be too far behind the game already to make any kind of significant impact?

Leaked Video Shows Yahoos Plans For Voice-Controlled Personal Assistant

Leaked Video Shows Yahoos Plans For Voice Controlled Personal AssistantEarlier this month, Yahoo acquired a company known as SkyPhrase, a company which specalizes in natural language processing. While it was unclear as to what Yahoo had planned for the company, it was revealed in a video discovered by Android Police that it would seem as though Yahoo’s plans for the company would be to build their very own voice-controlled personal assistant, which unsurprisingly brings other assistants such as Apple’s Siri to mind. Unfortunately the video itself is rather short and doesn’t really demonstrate the app’s prowess, but based on what we can see, we can look forward to the usual features, such as travel, traffic, weather, restaurant locations, and etc.

Now the next question would be when could we be seeing this app launched? Will this be a completely separate app on its own, or could it be integrated into existing Yahoo apps? More importantly can we expect this to arrive on a variety of platforms? Given that Yahoo would be more or a Google competitor rather than an Apple rival, it would be safe to assume that this new feature of Yahoo could potentially be a rival to Google Now, but we suppose we will have to see its final implementation to get a better idea of it.

Yahoo Weather App Finally Supports The iPad

Yahoo Weather App Finally Supports The iPad

There is no denying the fact that the App Store is filled with beautifully designed applications for iOS devices, users may feel spoilt for choice at times when searching for a particular type of app. When the Yahoo Weather app was first released, users appreciated and praised its design though initially it only came with support for the iPhone and iPod touch. However most iPhone or iPod touch users might never feel the need to download another weather app considering the fact that one is already natively present on those devices. This isn’t the case with the iPads though, Apple has created a native weather app for its tablets, which is why the updated Yahoo Weather app fills that void perfectly.

iPad users who want to keep track of weather information have plenty of apps available to them, but those who have used Yahoo’s app before are probably going to stick with it on the tablets as well. High resolution images pulled in from Flickr make it much more visually appealing than its rivals, while it provides relevant data such as current temperatures, forecasts for the days ahead and even animations when scrolling said forecasts. It warrants mentioning here that Yahoo Weather has won a design award from Apple at the WWDC 2013. The app now also allows users to share screenshots and forecasts. Yahoo Weather is free for download, it is live now on the App Store.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Apologizes For Mail Outage

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Apologizes For Mail Outage

Last week quite a lot of Yahoo Mail users started complaining about issues when trying to access the service. Soon after that, the company confirmed that one of its Mail servers was acting up, and that the issue had proved to be much harder to fix than anticipated. Yahoo assured users that it had teams working on it round the clock to bring everything back up. The Mail issues seem to have been taken care now, and with all that done and dusted, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer took to the company’s official blog to apologize for the prolonged outage.

She also detailed exactly what had happened. Mayer writes that there was a specific hardware outage in one of Yahoo’s storage systems that serves 1 percent of its users, but the “problem was a particularly rare one.” Since different users were affected in different ways, the resolution for affected accounts was nuanced. However during the week, Yahoo’s team worked “around the clock” to restore access as well as all messages to Mail inboxes. IMAP access was also improved for users who use clients such as Apple Mail or Outlook to access Yahoo Mail. Since then, Mayer says, access has been restored to “almost everyone” and the backlog of messages has been delivered. She also assures users that the company is going to work hard on improvements to prevent something like this from happening again. “We can, and we will, do better in the future,” concludes Mayer.

Microsoft and Yahoo are Battling it Out

This article was written on April 07, 2008 by CyberNet.

    microsoft and yahoo battle

Microsoft and Yahoo are at it again with this whole acquisition thing, and this time we find it a bit humorous. It started out on Saturday when Microsoft posted a press release with a letter that Steve Ballmer sent to Yahoo.  Yahoo responded of course, and they too posted their letter in a press release. To us it seems interesting that their letters to each other have been posted as press releases and it makes us wonder whether the receiving side even received a hard copy of the letter before they saw it online? This is turning out to be a very public situation between the two companies. Anyhow, back to the letters.

In the letter to Yahoo, Steve Ballmer talked about how Microsoft’s goal with making “such a generous offer was to create the basis for a speedy and ultimately friendly transaction” He then went on to threaten saying, “If we have not concluded an agreement within the next three weeks, we will be compelled to take our case directly to your shareholders, including the initiation of a proxy contest to elect an alternative slate of directors for the Yahoo! board.” Is that what you call friendly? Yahoo called Ballmer out on this and essentially said threatening wasn’t going to do any good. They say, “we consider your threat to commence an unsolicited offer and proxy contests to displace our independent Board members to be counterproductive and inconsistent with your state objective of a friendly transaction.”

Ultimately, Yahoo said that Microsoft’s offer simply isn’t enough and undervalues them. They stated that they are open to all alternatives which they say could include a transaction with Microsoft, if and only if Microsoft offers a price that “fully recognizes the value of Yahoo on a standalone basis.” Yahoo clearly stated that they will not allow anyone to come in and buy them unless the offer is good enough. Does that mean Microsoft will be forced to up their offer if they even want a chance at purchasing Yahoo? We know they’ve got the money, it’s just a matter of whether they want Yahoo bad enough to cave in. We think they do…

Flickr Goes Down As Yahoo Struggles To Get Mail Up And Running

Flickr Goes Down As Yahoo Struggles To Get Mail Up And Running

Over the past few days quite a lot of Yahoo Mail users have been complaining about issues with the service. The company confirmed that due to a hardware problem on one of its mail data servers, users were facing issues in accessing Yahoo Mail. While the company has teams working continuously to resolve the issue, which it says has proven harder to fix than originally anticipated, Flickr experienced partial outages earlier today as well.

The popular image hosting service, which is owned by Yahoo, currently seems to be back up once again but it is unclear what caused the issue in the first place. In a statement provided to CNET, Yahoo confirmed that Flickr did experience an outage and that the company was working quickly to fix the issue. It also apologized to users that might have been affected by the outage. The company is already dealing with a major service problem, it would certainly not want another crisis on its hands. While support teams are working around the clock to get Yahoo Mail up and running again, partial disruption is still being experienced. Most users are able to gain access to their inbox, though the company says that some users will still have trouble in accessing in their accounts. Up to 30 percent of all emails sent during the outage have now been delivered, the company hasn’t offered a timeframe in which it expects to have Mail up a 100 percent.
