Yahoo Mail Was Down Due To A Hardware Problem

Over the past few days a number of Yahoo Mail users have complained about not being able to access the email service. The company didn’t say anything, so it wasn’t known for sure exactly what was causing the problem. Yahoo has finally acknowledged that something is indeed wrong, and it apologizes for recent difficulties that users have been facing with Yahoo Mail. The company revealed that the downtime was caused by a hardware problem in one of its mail data centers, and that the problem turned out to be harder to fix than Yahoo originally expected.

Yahoo says that it has “dozens of people” working around the clock to get the service fully up and running again. It is keeping customers up to date through the Yahoo Mail Twitter account. So far, POP mail access has been restored, it is still working on restoring IMAP. Best way to access Yahoo Mail on a mobile device right now is through a Yahoo Mail app, available only for iOS and Android. The company says that affected servers have been able to deliver over 30 percent of the emails that were sent during the outage. It also says that some people might still be facing issues, and reassures that it won’t rest until the problem is fixed once and for all.

    Ptch Joins Yahoo!

Ptch Joins Yahoo! What happens when you are a large company, and have money to spare and yet want to fend off all of the little biters that swarm below you, who hope to get a piece of the action as well? Well, you either develop new technologies and advancements to stay ahead of the curve, or if you see something that you like below you, how about dangling a tempting carrot and hoping that they will bite? Yahoo! is in the news yet again, and they have just acquired the Dreamworks-backed social-video app Ptch. According to Ptch, this integration of their technology will be implemented so that Yahoo’s photo and video platforms will be improved, and you have until January 2, 2014 to download your creations from the website or app.

When the calendar turns to January 3, you would be all out of luck then, since that is when Ptch would close down. Ptch’s made a statement after news of the acquisition broke out, saying, “We launched Ptch just over a year ago. Our passion and our mission was to give you the best way to make and share beautiful movies made from the photos and videos on your phone. Well, someone noticed! Today, we’re excited to announce that Ptch will be joining Yahoo! As part of the Yahoo team, we’ll be able to focus our efforts and leverage our technology to make Yahoo’s photo and video platforms the best in the world. As part of this transition, Ptch will shut down on January 2, 2014. Until then, you can download your ptches on ptch.com or save them to your camera roll from the Ptch app on your phone.” [Press Release]

Top Yahoo Searches In 2013 Revealed

December is here and 2013 is slowly coming to an end. A lot of advancements in the technology sector were made this year and a lot of amazing products were released as well. Yahoo has revealed the top Yahoo searches in 2013, the company has launched its 2013 Year In Review page which looks back at daily search habits of million of internet users around the globe.

The top search on Yahoo in 2013 was singer, songwriter and actress Miley Cyrus, who has caused quite a few controversies this year. We can image that internet searches spiked after her rather controversial performance at the VMAs. NSA tapping fiber-optics for Google and Yahoo data suggest insiders

Fiber-optic cable taps, not clandestine agreements with big cloud data users like Google and Yahoo, may have given the NSA its treasure-trove access to internet traffic, insiders suspect, with the government agency potentially targeting interconnects rather than data centers themselves. While data centers are heavily secured, the fiber-optic cable links between them are traditionally unencrypted, […]

Yahoo Signs Katie Couric As Global Anchor

Yahoo Signs Katie Couric As Global Anchor

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer had made a number of bold decisions ever since she took over as leader of the company, decisions such as the $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr and several other multi-million dollar acquisitions. The company also has a new logo now and has refreshed the look and feel of many of its services. Under Mayer, Yahoo continues to push into the media landscape and the company has now signed someone to become the face of that push. Mayer announced through a blog post that Yahoo has signed Katie Couric as its “global anchor,” and that she will start early next year.

Katie Couric is a well known media personality, already having worked at ABC News, NBC and CBS. While she will cover “the world’s most interesting stories and newsmakers” as Yahoo’s global anchor, she will also continue her daily talk show on ABC called “Katie.” Though there have been rumors that perhaps ABC won’t renew the show for a third season. Mayer’s blog post doesn’t detail exactly what else Couric will be tasked with at Yahoo, but she’ll most likely be on the front page, as the CEO says Couric is going to be “the face of Yahoo News.” Couric joins other media personalities Yahoo has already picked up, personalities like David Pogue, Megan Liberman and Matt Bai. Mayer says that the company is investing in bringing its users “the absolute best content and video experiences available,” and that Yahoo is just getting started.
