The NSA May Have Penetrated Internet Cables to Spy on Google and Yahoo

It recently came to light that the NSA snooped on the communications of Google and Yahoo users without ever breaking into a data center. Now, the New York Times is reporting, it appears that could be because it penetrated fiber optic cables.

Apple TV software update brings on PBS and Yahoo Screen

A software update is headed to Apple TV this week with both Yahoo Screen (similar to the iOS experience) and availability of a new PBS app to boot. This update allows users to attain PBS content as well as Yahoo video content where such features were limited – if available at all – through alternate […]

Apple TV update adds Yahoo Screen and PBS apps

Yahoo’s been working hard to include support for Apple services in its Screen iOS app, now it’s gone one better and launched its video-discovery app on Apple TV. With an emphasis on comedy, Yahoo Screen has been designed to collate the best of web video, including clips from Saturday Night Live, The Colbert Report, and The Daily Show, as well as live news, events and music. You’ll also be able to browse trending videos and watch Yahoo Originals programming, which are delivered direct to your Apple TV without the need to AirPlay them across. AllThingsD reports that PBS has also quietly pushed a new app, letting users get their Nova, Frontline or Antiques Roadshow fix (older episodes of Downton Abbey will be available shortly after PBS begins re-airing seasons early next year). Today’s update may only available to US users but Apple isn’t being shy about broadening the number of Apple TV apps available across the globe.

Yahoo to encrypt all internal and user data by early next year

Marissa Mayer, by way of the official Yahoo Tumblr, has announced the plans to begin encrypting more data. This follows the recent news about encrypting Yahoo Mail. The mail encryption is coming by January 8, 2014 and promises https (SSL – Secure Sockets Layer) encryption with a 2048-bit key. This next phase of encryption is […]

Yahoo To Encrypt All Data Flowing Between Its Data Centers By Q1, 2014

Over the past few months the world has gained considerable insight into the clandestine data collection operations of the National Security Agency, courtesy of former CIA analyst Edward Snowden. A number of major companies were named in those leaked top secret documents, companies such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and more. A cache of documents recently leaked by Snowden alleged that the NSA is capable of tapping into Google and Yahoo’s data centers without the companies knowing about it. Today, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer reiterated what she has said multiple times in the past, that “Yahoo has never given access to our data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency. Ever.”

Mayer also announced that Yahoo will encrypt all data flowing between its data centers by the end of Q1, 2014 and it will also offer users the option to encrypt data from to and from Yahoo servers. The company will also work with its international mail partners to make sure that Yahoo co-branded email accounts are https-enabled. The move comes after Yahoo’s recent announcement of adding 2048-bit SSL encryption across its email network by January 8, 2014. It can’t be said for sure though if these steps will make your data NSA proof, the agency is rumored to have the capability to passively decrypt data that’s SSL-protected.

    Marissa Mayer: Yahoo will encrypt all user data by early 2014

    Yahoo recently announced that it will encrypt webmail by default, and today Marissa Mayer shared that the security measure will be applied across all Yahoo products “by the end of Q1 2014.” In a post on the company Tumblr, CEO Mayer outlined three specific measures to protect user data:

    • Encrypt all information that moves between our data centers by the end of Q1 2014;
    • Offer users an option to encrypt all data flow to/from Yahoo by the end of Q1 2014;
    • Work closely with our international Mail partners to ensure that Yahoo co-branded Mail accounts are https-enabled.

    This news is no doubt a response to persisting questions — and court cases — about the scope of the NSA’s information-tapping policies as they relate to internet giants such as Facebook, Google and Yahoo. As the company has previously asserted, Mayer emphasized that Yahoo has “never given access to… data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency. Ever.”

    Yahoo Releases oneSearch on Yahoo! Mobile Web Service

    This article was written on March 20, 2007 by CyberNet.

    YahoosearchYesterday, Yahoo expanded their oneSearch feature and made it available for just about any phone in the US on Yahoo! Mobile Web Service.  oneSearch will give you quick access to important answers while you’re on the go.

    oneSearch provides you with a convenient way to perform your searches. It uses context like your zip code for location to provide you with relevant search results. The results you receive after performing a search are varied depending on what you’re searching for.

    For example, if you’re searching for a camera, it will provide you results divided into categories like products, product categories, and nearby camera stores.  Another example is if you’re searching for pizza. oneSearch will pull up a list of options with phone numbers and ratings from users for the different pizza places around, and you’ll also see business categories pertaining to it, Flickr photos of pizza, and several related web sites.

    Yahoogo2If you were to select one of the options that it gave you, you’d get another layer of information with the “extended details” option(pictured to the left).  Then you’d see more options like getting directions, or actually reading the reviews for the restaurant from Yahoo users who’ve rated or reviewed it on Yahoo Local.

    You’ll probably notice that Yahoo is monetizing oneSearch by using advertisements, and sponsored links. Overall, the search results will give more more than just a bunch of links to Yahoo pages, and the interface is much improved, so the discrete adds will probably be worth it.

    If you’re wanting to get oneSearch on your mobile phone (if you’re in the US), you can click here , and in the upper right corner you’ll be able to enter in your phone number to receive a text message with a link to get you started with oneSearch on the mobile web.

    Yahoo is definitely taking the competition with Google seriously because they’ve made the extra effort to create a PDF that compares the two. If I had to choose between using Yahoo’s oneSearch on my mobile phone over Google’s search, at this point I’d pick Yahoo. They’ve done a great job of integrating their services to provide a concise helpful mobile search.
