ZTE Geek With Tizen, Rumors Round Up

ZTE Geek With Tizen, Rumors Round UpAmidst all of the MWC 2014 madness that will see major releases from all of the big players such as Nokia, Samsung, and LG among others, there will be some of the other smaller players such as ZTE of China. Granted, China is the country with the world’s largest population of over 1 billion easily, and if you were to control just a small percentage of the local market alone, it would be easy to say that you have it made to live a comfortable life for the rest of your days on earth. The thing is, there are always new horizons to conquer, and it seems that the ZTE Geek with Tizen OS has been rumored to arrive at MWC 2014. (more…)

Powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Boost Max touts a 5.7 inch HD IPS display with Gorilla Glass, an 8 megapixel rear camera, 1.2GHz dual-core processor coupled with 1GB of RAM and a 3,200mAh battery. ZTE Optik 2 Launches On Sprint For $29.99

zte-optik2If you’re looking to get your hands on a tablet that is affordable, devices like the Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX could just be what the doctor ordered, but if you still think that those devices are a little out of your budget and you’re not looking for anything too exciting, Sprint might have something for you in the form of the ZTE Optik 2, the successor to the ZTE Optik that was launched back in 2012 which also made its way onto Sprint’s network. Sprint has recently announced that the tablet will be available for purchase through Sprint’s Web Sales and Business Sales and will be priced at a very affordable $29.99, although it does require you to enter into a new two-year agreement with the carrier.

Then again if wanted a tablet with mobile internet connectivity as well, we guess signing a contract might not be such a bad deal after all. In terms of hardware specs, the ZTE Optik 2 will feature a 7” display with a resolution of 1280×800. It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage that can be expanded via microSD, a 4,000mAH battery, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 2MP front-facing camera, and will run on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. It’s not the sleekest or the most powerful Android tablet we’ve seen, but it will get the job done for those whose interest is more towards going online rather than running intensive programs.

ZTE G601U Joins The Rugged Smartphone Bandwagon

zte-g601u-smartphoneIt seems that there is a growing market when it comes to rugged smartphones, or at least smartphones that do not crack at every little knock or drop. Not only that, the modern day design of rugged smartphones have gotten more and more sleek, unlike their early years counterparts. ZTE has decided to jump aboard the rugged smartphone bandwagon as well with the introduction of the ZTE G601U, and I am quite sure that if this particular device does well, the folks over at Sony and Kyocera would most probably look over their shoulders.

ZTE Geek Running On Tizen Rumored To Be Shown Off At MWC 2014

ZTE Geek Running On Tizen Rumored To Be Shown Off At MWC 2014Back in 2013, ZTE officially unveiled the ZTE Geek Android smartphone. Unlike most Android smartphones, the ZTE Geek would not be powered by a processor based on the ARM architecture, but would be powered by an Intel processor instead. Well it looks like ZTE could be looking to give the Geek a revival this year at MWC because according to a report published in Greece, ZTE is set to unveil a new ZTE Geek, but instead of running on Android, the new Geek will be powered by the Tizen platform instead. Expected to debut at MWC 2014 this year, the handset is said to be shown off at the Tizen Association booth where there will reportedly be an app challenge taking place, presumably to lure developers to create apps for the Tizen platform.

For those unfamiliar, Tizen is a smartphone platform that was developed in part by Samsung. The platform is said to be an alternative to iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone. In fact, Samsung who has depended greatly on Android is said to be developing a Tizen handset of their own, although the handset has yet to be officially announced. While we can’t speak for the quality of Tizen and its performance, the fact that Android and iOS are so incredibly established and with a wealth of apps that their disposal, budding platforms will most likely discover it’s an uphill battle if they hope to displace the leaders of the smartphone market.

ZTE Eco-Mobius Modular Phone Concept: Junior Master Race

We recently saw Razer’s concept for their newbie-friendly modular desktop computer. ZTE is also mulling taking a similar approach to mobile phones. The company presented its idea at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). ZTE calls its concept device the Eco-Mobius, a smartphone with swappable core components.

zte eco mobius modular smartphone concept 620x394magnify

Eco-Mobius is almost exactly the same as Dave Hakkens’ Phonebloks concept as well as Motorola’s Project Ara prototype, two ideas that went viral late last year. The goal is to separate a phone’s major parts – CPU, RAM, GPU etc. – into modules that users can remove and replace on their own. In ZTE’s design, the modules will be held in place by magnets. As with Razer’s Project Christine, ZTE also thinks they can enable users to install multiple units of the same hardware, such as multiple storage devices or even multiple cameras.

Macmixing spoke with a ZTE spokesperson at CES about the Eco-Mobius:

I’d love for all of my gadgets to be modular and customizable. I wish I was modular. My eyes and back badly need an upgrade.

    ZTE Eco-Mobius Prototype Spotted

ZTE Eco Mobius Prototype Spotted[CES 2014] ZTE has come up with its fair share of devices in the past, especially smartphones and to a certain extent, tablets, but what they have done with this proof-of-concept known as the ZTE Eco-Mobius is equally interesting, or perhaps even more so. While this particular concept does look interesting on the CES showfloor, it does not seem as though ZTE has any intent to fully commit themselves to the Eco-Mobius project in any particular manner. Rather, the whole idea of the Eco-Mobius would be to showcase just how a modular smartphone might look like, as well as how it might all come and fit together.

With the ZTE Eco-Mobius, it depicts just how the “core” modules are all able to be swapped out. And when I mention “core” modules here, I’m really serious – it includes the likes of a camera, CPU, GPU, RAM, and ROM. The whole idea behind this modular capability is to reduce the amount of waste by enabling individual pieces to be replaced, instead of purchasing a whole new smartphone yet again after a year or two. What do you think of the idea of a modular smartphone, and should it be extended to the world of tablets as well? Image courtesy of The Verge.

ZTE To Ship Own LTE USB Dongles

ZTE To Ship Own LTE USB DonglesThe folks over at ZTE have just announced that they will be shipping a home-grown LTE modem within one of its very own LTE USB dongles. If you are one who loves to dive knee deep into model numbers and names, then it would be better known as the ZTE ZX297502. This would come across as a second-generation LTE modem from ZTE. According to Jim Mielke, VP of engineering at ABI Research, “ZTE recently announced the WiseFone 7510 LTE modem for release early this year but the 7510 is a third generation LTE chip. The first generation was mainly a prototype; the second generation was the first real production chip and is certainly the basis for the 28nm 7510 scheduled to be released early 2014.”

The ZX297502 would strictly remain as a modem baseband; where it is accompanied by ADI and ACP transceivers, not to mention a TI power management unit (PMU). ABI Research has also performed a complete teardown of the ZTE LTE chipset as well as the accompanying chips, where one would be able to gain access to the complete bill of materials alongside rough cost estimates, high resolution dismantling and board photos, and component die photos and X-rays. We wonder when will we see these products being used widely by the masses. [Press Release]
