PS3 Fanboy received an interesting scan of an internal letter coming from Best Buy that explains that the 80GB Playstation 3 is going closeout. This means that there will be no new shipments, once their current stock of 80GB systems is gone, that’s it. The memo states:
The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won’t be replaced at this time. It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time.
This has lead people to question what’s going on over at Sony and how this move fits into the bigger picture. Combine this rumor with the other rumor that the 40GB model will receive a decent price-cut and will be sold at $299 starting on January 28th (the same day the 80GB PS3 goes closeout), and we know there has to be something going on. Additionally, there was a recent FCC filing for a white PS3 model, like what’s currently being sold in Japan. Perhaps Sony will be introducing it into the US market?
The only real downside that I can see with this move is that now Best Buy won’t be selling a model that supports PS2 games. Only the 80GB model offered the backwards compatibility. Given that Japan currently doesn’t sell a model that supports PS2, I’m sure this is a non-issue for Sony.
