Play DivX Videos on Your PS3 … Soon

PS3 with DivX Playstation 3 users are getting all riled up because DivX support has officially been announced for the system. This will be sent out via a separate system software update sometime in future, which means existing PS3 owners will get a piece of the action.

So what does this actually mean? DivX says that game developers will be able to utilize DivX’s decoder technology, but that’s nothing too do backflips over. The big news is that PS3 owners will be able to watch almost all of the videos that are currently shared over the BitTorrent network. The excitement is perfectly understandable considering all of the television shows and movies being shared in this format, which users will be able to throw on their system and watch. This will be thrown onto the decently long list of the already supported media formats for the PS3:

  • Video formats: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.264/MEPG-4 AVC, and MPEG-4 SP
  • Audio formats: ATRAC (.oma .msa .aa3), MP3, AAC (.3gp .mp4), and WAV
  • Image formats: JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, and PNG

There has also been rumors that DivX support is coming to the Xbox 360, but both Microsoft and DivX have yet to confirm it. Microsoft better get on top of this because it could effect the decision of buyers this holiday season!
