Nintendo posts earnings, drops 3DS from $249 to $169 August 12th, current owners get 20 free games

The price of the Nintendo 3DS in the US is dropping precipitously August 12th from $249 to $169, with other regions getting a similar price break in their respective currency. Are you one of the 830,000~ US gamers that have already shelled out? Don’t be too disappointed, the thank you gift for gamers that have logged into the eShop at least once before the price cut will be 10 free NES virtual console games September 1st, plus 10 more Game Boy Advance virtual console games — that Nintendo is not planning on releasing to the general public — before the end of the year. Left holding the bag for all this desperation generosity, are the company’s investors. While pressure from the upcoming Vita is surely playing a part, Nintendo plans to sell 16 million 3DS units in the financial year, but still slashed its financial projections for the year from ¥110 billion to just ¥20 billion. Check out the financial PDFs at the source links below while you decide if 10 potentially-exclusive GBA games are worth paying $80 extra for.

Namco decides to make 3DS save games permanent

Today we have proof that game publishers in Japan either don’t keep up with the news, or just don’t care. Proof of this comes in the form of Namco deciding it’s a good idea to ship 3DS games with save games that you cannot delete. It was only a month ago that Capcom caused uproar […]

Amazon briefly pulls Cosmo Black Nintendo 3DS due to ‘inventory issues,’ reinstates it moments later

Here’s a weird one. Earlier today, we heard (and confirmed) reports that the Cosmo Black Nintendo 3DS was unavailable for purchase directly through Amazon. We followed up with the company to get to the bottom of things, and were fed this explanation from a company spokesperson:

“We received customer feedback that there may be an inventory issue with the Cosmo Black Nintendo 3DS. The integrity of the product is not under review. Customers are still able to purchase the Amazon.com offer of the Aqua Blue Nintendo 3DS, however the Amazon.com offer of [the] black Nintendo 3DS has been removed until the inventory issue is resolved. There is no problem with the Cosmo Black Nintendo 3DS units themselves. This is an internal inventory problem that was brought to our attention from customer feedback and we are looking into it and will resolve as soon as possible.”

Turns out, “as soon as possible” meant “three minutes later.” As of this very moment in time, the handheld is available and in stock over at the world’s most recognized e-tailer, with the outfit confirming to us that sales “have been reinstated.” At any rate, we suppose this serves to clarify one thing while bringing about a totally separate question — there’s nothing physically wrong with the 3DS so far as Amazon’s concerned, but how on Earth is its inventory team reacting that quickly?

Ubisoft planning Assassin’s Creed for tablets

Ubisoft giveth, and taketh away. Nintendo 3DS owners who were looking forward to their own Assassin’s Creed game will be disappointed to learn the project has been canceled. At the same time though, Ubisoft announced that they were planning new Assassin’s Creed games, specifically for new platforms like tablets like the iPad. The announcement that […]

Nintendo Video’s 3DS app plays coy, is / is not launching in the US today

Is Nintendo Video launching in the US, or is it just coming soon? Someone over at the house that Mario built needs to make up their mind — Reggie knuckle sandwich, anyone? The application was quietly announced this morning via Nintendo Download, then listed as a non-downloadable item on the eShop and featured on the company’s official site with a release dated today. So, where is it then? Your guess is as good as ours. When it finally hits your parallax display, expect this 3DS only app to update weekly with fresh content, promising limited-time only 2D and 3D comedy, action and adventure shorts. Head to the eShop right now, and you’ll be treated to a music-backed, text-only tease of the service and a College Humour video, apparently. If a curated experience from the makers of the Wii U fits your bill, then go right ahead and set that Spotpass to download.

Netflix on Nintendo 3DS hands-on (video)

Netflix on Nintendo 3DS hands-on (video)

The Nintendo 3DS may be suffering from a slight lack of hot games at the moment, but thanks to a little update it is certainly not suffering from a lack of great movies and TV shows to watch. The Netflix addition that Nintendo promised us back in the summer is now up for download, and download is just what we did. If you’re wondering just how Instant content looks on the small screen, click on through and find out.

Nintendo confirms Netflix on the 3DS hitting today

Last night’s Netflix / 3DS news was more than just empty promises — and now we have the official press release to prove it. Starting today, Netflix subscribers with unlimited streaming plans will be able to watch TV shows and movies from the service’s selection of online content on their Nintendo 3DS, like the Wii before it. Movies will show up in 2D (darn) on the upper screen of the device, with 3D content coming soon to the glasses-free portable. The Netflix app will be hitting the Nintendo eShop today as a free download. The app doesn’t appear to be in the store as of yet, but we’ll let you know when it pops up. In the meantime, feel free to check out the press release below — no glasses required.

Netflix streaming comes to the Nintendo 3DS tomorrow

Ever since Nintendo’s GDC announcement in March we’ve been waiting for Netflix streaming on the 3DS, and it appears tomorrow’s eShop update will do the trick. This may be too late for those that followed through on threats to cancel after the new rates were announced yesterday, but all other 3DS owners can get their Parks & Rec (in 3D?) anywhere in range of a WiFi signal. Joystiq also points out there’s also two Game Boy games coming in tomorrow’s update, Game & Watch Gallery and Baseball, just in case you’re interested in using your portable game machine to actually play games.

Nintendo Video arrives on Japanese 3DS tomorrow, American equivalent and Netflix ‘later this summer’

Nintendo Video arrives on Japanese 3DS tomorrow, American equivalent and Netflix coming 'later this summer'

It wouldn’t be a Nintendo product if the JDM release didn’t get special treatment, and that practice continues here for the 3DS. The Nintendo Video service hits the Japanese version of the parallax-busting handheld tomorrow, allowing the download of 2D and 3D content that’s been “recommended” by the house Mario built. It’s actually the second video service to hit Japanese systems, following SpotPass TV‘s earlier launch with original content. When will we Americans get something fulfilling? “Later this summer” according to a Nintendo statement, which also confirms Netflix will be available “soon” — soon enough to save your subscription?
