Motorola Droid 3, Droid X 2 and LTE-equipped Targa pictured?

The Motorola Droid 2 and Droid X are both headed toward their one-year anniversaries this summer, which has pretty much become the culling hour for a smartphone of any creed these days. Their successors, ingeniously titled the Droid 3 and Droid X 2, have seemingly made an appearance over at HowardForums, courtesy of longtime forum member wnrussell. He’s also kindly provided imagery of a heretofore unknown device, called the Targa, which promises Verizon 4G LTE and has a protrusion on its rear that looks to be dedicated to accommodating an outsized camera sensor. It reminds us most of Motorola’s XT720, though it sports a chrome outline to its body similar to what you see above on the purported Droid 3. Click past the break to get an eyeful of this Targa device and its Droid X 2 brandmate.

Wirefly: ‘no Skype’ on Thunderbolt, but simultaneous 3G voice and data is a go; ships on March 17th

Wireless retailer Wirefly is pushing ahead with pre-orders for the beleaguered HTC Thunderbolt starting at midnight Pacific Time this evening with the promise that they’ll start shipping this Thursday, the 17th; that lines up with a whole lot of noise we’ve heard recently, so we can’t really argue with it at this point. They’re also confirming a couple rumors that have been floating around since the phone’s January debut: first, they’re saying “no Skype,” which we’re taking to mean that the promised Skype video calling app won’t be installed out of the box. We’re also assuming (or at least hoping) that you’ll be able to install the standard voice-only version. Secondly, they’re saying that the phone definitely does simultaneous voice and data over 3G, a feature that was just recently made possible on Verizon’s CDMA network through software upgrades — and the Thunderbolt, it seems, will be the first retail device to have the pleasure of taking it for a spin.

HTC Thunderbolt tipped to launch March 17th, again

Well, it looks like the seemingly unending saga of the HTC Thunderbolt launch could really, finally be drawing to a close. Following up a fairly solid hint earlier today, we now have some actual tangible evidence that the 4G-equipped smartphone will indeed be launching on Thursday, March 17th courtesy of some helpful tipsters. Of course, that’s still not completely official, but HTC has promised that an announcement is coming “soon,” so we should be hearing more from both it and Verizon any day (or moment) now if it the 17th really is the launch date. One more shot after the break.

HTC’s Thunderbolt coming March 17th: survey says… yes!

After being jilted on Valentine’s Day, you’d think we would learn. But having tasted the goods, we couldn’t help but get suckered in by every HTC Thunderbolt launch date rumor — only to have our hopes dashed each time its release was inexorably pushed further and further back. Now, a leaked email and an HTC regional sales manager’s tweet (whose account has subsequently been deleted) claim our lust for Verizon’s first 4G handset will finally be quenched on March 17th. HTC posted on Facebook that the official launch date will be announced “soon, ” and four days from now would certainly qualify. We just hope Best Buy and Big Red realize they face a legion of disappointed (and drunken) St. Patty’s Day revelers should they delay Thunderbolt delivery day yet again. Let’s hope the luck of the Irish finally gets us our LTE.

Samsung Galaxy S 4G review

It’s only been six months since Samsung launched its highly successful Galaxy S assault upon the US market with a series of carrier customized phones: the Vibrant and Captivate GSM twins for T-Mobile and AT&T, the WiMAX-rocking Epic 4G for Sprint and the Fascinate for Verizon. More derivatives arrived later, with the Mesmerize, Continuum, Nexus S, and LTE-equipped Galaxy Indulge. Still the Vibrant was the first, and the closest in appearance to the original Galaxy S, losing the front-facing camera, but gaining a search button. Unfortunately, Samsung was slow to upgrade early devices like the Vibrant beyond Eclair, and to fix the well-documented AGPS problems. As such, the release of the Samsung Galaxy S 4G for T-Mobile — basically an updated Vibrant with HSPA+, a front-facing camera, a bronze battery cover, Froyo out of the gate, but no dedicated internal flash storage — is bittersweet. While beneficial to those who waited, it’s a slap in the face to those who purchased the Vibrant. But is it a worthy upgrade? How does it fit into T-Mobile’s high-end Android lineup? Read on for our full review after the break.

LG Revolution passes through the FCC, four Gs intact

We managed to see plenty of the LG Revolution at both CES and Mobile World Congress, and it’s now finally cleared one of the final hurdles on its way to availability. While there’s unfortunately none of the usual teardown pictures to be found just yet, the phone has now passed all of the FCC’s various tests, and been slapped with the requisite label to prove it. Sadly, we still don’t have much indication of a release date but, as Wireless Goodness points out, there’s an increasingly good chance that this could actually be Verizon’s first 4G phone if the HTC Thunderbolt delays continue.

Samsung’s First Verizon 4G Phone – The “Stealth”

vz-4g.jpg

Samsung unveiled plans to support Verizon’s emerging 4G LTE network at CES, but didn’t reveal any official product names at the time. Now, word is that the first of hopefully many Samsung products to hit the leading mobile carrier’s new network will be called the Stealth.

Other manufacturers have already committed to Verizon’s high-speed infrastructure, with the LG Revolution, HTC Thunderbolt, and Motorola Droid Bionic in the picture. And now it’s Samsung’s turn.

The Stealth will have a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, along with a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor and an 8-megapixel digital camera. It’ll initially launch with Android 2.2.

Verizon CTO: ‘working through issues’ with LTE phones, still on track for first half launch

No blockbusters here — nothing that’s going to give you much insight into an exact launch day for the Thunderbolt — but Verizon CTO Tony Melone made a few comments about its LTE handset launches at a financial conference yesterday that border on the interesting. Asked whether the company was facing any challenges in getting the phones solid and ready for commercial consumption, Melone responded by saying that they’re “facing is what you would expect, and that is a new technology, you are working through issues. And [they] anticipated that, and [they] are pleased at how [they] are working through issues.” In the same breath, he reminded the audience that Verizon had said the phones would be coming in the first half of ’11 all along and that hasn’t changed — so they’re not late by a long shot. Pressed on whether battery life specifically was a concern for the Thunderbolt, Melone said that he thinks the juice “will be acceptable to consumers.” Considering what we’ve been hearing about recent firmware revisions on the test units, we’re hopeful he’s right — Verizon has a reputation for testing the crap out of devices prior to release, after all.

Deutsche Telekom thinking of merging T-Mobile USA with Sprint?

It ain’t as crazy as you may think. If you’ll recall, we actually heard last month that Deutsche Telekom was mulling the idea of spinning off T-Mobile USA from its portfolio, and now it looks as if one carrier in particular is interested. According to the inimitable “people with knowledge of the matter,” Bloomberg Businessweek is reporting that Deutsche Telekom has gone ahead with talks to “sell its T-Mobile USA unit to Sprint in exchange for a major stake in the combined entity.” Granted, there’s no guarantees at this point that the two will actually reach a deal that sits well with both boards, and up until now, they haven’t been able to come to terms with T-Mob’s valuation. As the story goes, Deutsche Telekom has purportedly said that it could sell “all or part of the US business, and all options are open.” Meanwhile, Sprint’s remaining mum. A merger of these two would combine the number three and four players in America, but if that doesn’t pan out, T-Mobile USA may end up buying wireless spectrum from Clearwire as an alternative. We’re hearing that an outright sale of T-Mobile in the US is pretty much off of the table, but considering just how many backroom talks are apparently going on in both camps, we won’t be surprised until they tell us to be.

HTC seeks EVO View 4G trademark, all but confirming WiMAX tablet for Sprint

Not that we were doubting the veracity of our tipster’s info, but here’s a nice fat slice of pseudo-official confirmation of what we were told a couple of days ago. HTC has laid claim to the trademark of “HTC EVO View 4G,” confirming our indications that an EVO View tablet would be coming to Sprint’s Now Network. That postulation is also supported by the fact that the EVO branding has only ever appeared in association with Sprint as well as some pretty compelling circumstantial evidence. There is an interesting new piece to the puzzle, however, in the 4G appendage to the device’s name, which would imply that we’re looking at our first WiMAX tablet — something Sprint promised for this year and looks set to unveil at the upcoming CTIA 2011 trade show. Our expectation is that the EVO View 4G moniker will be attached to HTC’s1.5GHz Flyer, a 7-inch Android Gingerbread slate with aspirations for Honeycomb glory in its near future. Only one way to be sure though, keep an eye on our CTIA coverage and we’ll let you know as soon as the official bird chirps out the official word.
