Emulator runs Wii games in 720p while we wonder what might have been

Using PCs to do what Nintendon’t, YouTube user renebarahona is running Wii games in HD resolutions through the Dolphin emulator. One peek at Super Smash Bros. Brawl in 720p is enough to make any of us wonder what a world where Nintendo didn’t hate HD (even yanking 480p capability from the Gamecube, we’re still not over that) would be like. These games aren’t merely upscaled like DVDs, they’re being rendered in a high resolution natively with extra anti-aliasing Xbox 360 BC-style, producing surprisingly crisp visuals. Check out the embedded videos after the break (remember to hit the HD button) for an example, including how to set this up on your own computer.

Panasonic’s DMC-TZ7 reviewed, offers great quality stills and vids

Panasonic's DMC-TZ7 reviewed, offers great quality stills and vids

This is a great time to be shopping for a high-end pocketable digital camera — assuming you’re the sort who doesn’t get overwhelmed when faced with plenty of options. With recent offerings like Fuji’s F200EXR, Ricoh’s CX1, and Casio’s EC-FX100, it’s a busy market, and now the arrival of Panasonic’s DMC-TZ7 makes it even more so. Reviewed by Photography Blog, the 10 megapixel cam was found to offer great image quality at both ends of its 12x, 25 – 300mm Leica lens, functional image stabilization, and minimal noise up to ISO 400 (though it does go all the way to 1600). Even the 720p video recording impressed, which you can see for yourself in the sample vid embedded below. At the end it nabs a perfect rating, which might make it perfect for your pocket — if you don’t mind that $400 MSRP.

Forever Plus finally takes a pico projector to 720p

Well, would you look at that! It’s not 3M, Dell, Toshiba or any other mega-corp taking the totally tired pico projector from lackluster to 720p — oh no, it’s, um, Forever Plus. Said beamer has been around the block a time or two, but given the native 1,280 x 768 native resolution, we couldn’t help but take notice. Reportedly, the 0.49- x 0.59- x 0.19-inch box outputs via HDMI and packs a lamp life of 30,000 hours, but we definitely have serious doubts about the quality. And the actual availability, for that matter.

Gemei offers up 4.3-inch HD-660 PMP

It’s been quite some time since we’ve heard a good word from the folks at Gemei, but clearly, there was no resolution made upon the Chinese New Year that they’d stick to originality and stop ripping ideas from other PMP mainstays. Oh sure, the HD-660 isn’t exactly like anything else we’ve seen, but we’d wager that the designers at Archos would disagree. At any rate, those in China can now find this 4.3-inch PMP for sale, packing a 480 x 272 resolution display, 32GB of internal memory, support for a smorgasbord of file formats, and a bundled remote and TV output cable. No word on pricing, but it’ll probably sit nicely between “cheap” and “reasonably affordable.”

Samsung expands SL camera lineup: SL820, SL620, SL202 and SL30

It was but merely a month ago that Samsung introduced two new ones in its blossoming SL series, and now the company’s shooting out four more in the run-up to PMA. Kicking things off are the SL820 (pictured) and SL620, two 12.2 megapixel shooters which sport three-inch LCD monitors and a 5x optical zoom. With the former, users are presented with a 28mm wide angle lens, while the SL620 offers a standard 35mm lens. The pair also touts Optical and Digital Image Stabilization, while the SL820 steps it up with 720p video recording (compared to the SL620’s VGA mode) and HDMI connectivity. Moving on, we’ve got the SL202 and SL30, which both arrive with 10 megapixel sensors and a 3x optical zoom. Beyond that, everything’s about as plain as it gets, so we’ll just skip right to the prices while hosting up the full release after the break. The May-bound SL820 will go for $279.99, while the March-bound SL620, SL202 and SL30 will sticker for $199.99, $149.99 and $99.99, respectively.

Samsung’s OmniaHD: world’s first phone to capture 720p video?

We’ve no way to confirm at the moment, but if SamsungCentral is to be believed, Samsung’s newly announced OmniaHD will soon become the world’s first cellphone to record 720p video. Unlike the HTC Touch HD — which had precisely zero high-def amenities — it seems the next breed of Omnia may actually live up to its moniker. Other purported specifications include an 8 megapixel camera and a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, though the resolution of the panel is currently unknown. Have we mentioned we can’t wait to get our paws around this? Because we can’t.

Update: Sammy’s sent out a press release for the OmniaHD and, sure enough, this bad boy’s boasting 720p video recording. Also confirmed: we can’t wait to try this sucker out.

Intel slide shows Atom N280 with 945GSE and GN40 chipsets

It may be hard for you monogamists to understand, but in the world of CPUs, it’s perfectly acceptable to play friends with multiple chipsets. To that end, the leaked Intel slide above sure explains a lot about what’s going on with the newfangled 1.66GHz Atom N280. First spotted in the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE with Intel’s older 945GSE chipset, many wondered why the supposed match-made-in-heaven GN40 chipset (and its 720p hardware-based video decoder) was left out. Apparently, it’s all part of the plan. Both the N280 + 945GSE and N280 + GN40 are considered “off-roadmap” solutions meant to give companies a subtle differentiating factor until the “real” N270 successor hits the scene. So yeah, that 1000HE you’ve got on the brain isn’t actually a hodgepodge of components, but a real, certifiably okay combination of CPU and chipset — though it’d be so much more bodacious with that GN40. Confused yet?

Kodak’s rugged Zx1 handheld camcorder does 720p in the jungle

Kodak’s 720p Zi6 has only been out for six months, but already we’re seeing what’s likely its beefed-up predecessor. The mighty Zx1 is debuting here at CES, and with it comes a 2-inch LCD monitor, easy upload to YouTube, 720p HD video capture at 60fps, an IP43-certified weather-resistant design and an SD / SDHC card slot that can understand media up to 32GB in size. All told, users can capture up to ten hours of high-def video, and the bundled HDMI cable makes showing off recent grabs as easy as pie. The Zx1 will arrive in five colors (pink, blue, yellow, red and black) and will include pre-charged AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries alongside a charger. We’ll bet Creative and Pure Digital have a little something of their own to show off before this one lands in April for $149.95. Full release is (where else?) after the break.
