Palm Pre Admaker Defends “Creepy” TV Commercial

Weird? Yes. Creepy? Yes. Successful? Of course!

The latest crop of Palm Pre ads may not be a favorite among some viewers but it does achieve its purpose of getting consumers to talk about the product, says Gary Koepke, co-founder and executive creative director at Modernista, the agency behind the Pre ads. So mission accomplished, says Koepke in an interview with Ad Age.

“The Pre is probably being talked about more than other phones right now because of the marketing and advertising, and that’s a good thing,” says Koepke.  “Could the ads work harder to show exactly how the phone works? Yes, but we knew it would be polarizing people to have a woman not shout at them and tell an interesting story.”

Palm’s recent TV commercials featuring a glowing actress, Tamara Hope, speaking in what is supposed to be a soothing voice about the product’s features. The idea is to find the middle ground between the Apple iPhone commercial that showcases the phone and its apps without having a real person in the ad and the ‘life on BlackBerry‘ ads, says Koepke. But the television spot has riled up bloggers for being “creepy.” The ad has also inspired a few YouTube parodies.

Palm has shown no signs that it wants to pull the plug on the ads so it is likely the company is happy with it. Now whether all this buzz has translated into Pre sales is something we won’t know until Palm and Sprint release their quarterly earnings next month.  So far, the two companies have not commented about the number of Pre phones sold since the device’s launch on June 6.

Video: New Palm Pre ad takes serene approach, just goes with the flow

When we last saw this fair-faced Pre spokesperson, she was sitting on a rock in an otherwise open field playing choreagrapher to a sea of robed individuals encircling her. This latest ad takes a decidedly simpler approach reminiscent of the vibe set in the Meet the Pre series, though we can’t say for sure her if her followers aren’t just waiting off-camera for the next directive. Also, interesting choice of onomatopoeia for sliding through the webOS cards, we imagine there’s a certain, Redmond-based company out there delighted by the subtle (and probably unintentional) reference. See the ad for yourself after the break — and in case you’re wondering, that song that’ll be stuck in your head all day is “Doot Doot” by Freur.

Ad impression report proves the Palm Pre is out there, somewhere

With just over a fortnight to go before Sprint starts selling Palm’s Pre, it stands to reason that a few of the units have made their way out into the wild. According to Millennial Media, that’s absolutely what has happened, with this month marking the first in which it recorded “initial Palm Pre [ad] impressions.” In other words, those lucky few Pre owners (or “testers,” if you will) are really just goofing off online rather than testing tactility and radiation output. Good to know.

New Apple Ad Mocks Microsoft Laptop Hunters In Usual Smarmy Way

Apple’s new ad takes solid aim at Microsoft’s recent much-talked-about Laptop Hunters ad series with the Apple style fully intact. In other words, it’s really, really smug.

The ad has a Lauren-type actress give her list of specifications, and of course, bunch by bunch, the drab-suited PCs are disqualified until she gets to “something that works,” at which point all the remaining PCs leave. Since we’ve been seeing some flames for criticizing the Laptop Hunters series, let me be one of many to say that I hate this and all other “I’m a Mac” ads. Sure, Laptop Series was kind of fluffy and without either substance or style, but at least it wasn’t condescending and smug. Now, what say you, commenters? [Apple]

Microsoft: ‘It Costs $30,000 to Fill an iPod’

Apple equals quality, Microsoft equals cheap. This is the apparent message from the recent flurry of MS ads, all of which focus on price. This time it’s iTunes, and the fact that — if you own an iPod Classic and only buy music from iTunes and don’t ever put any podcasts or movies on there — filling an iPod costs $30,000. Buying a monthly Zune Pass, however, only costs $15 per month. Until the DRM gets switched off and you’re left with nothing, we guess.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t have thirty grand laying around for music.

That is correct, Microsoft Ad Man. That’s because you have only sold two or three Zunes. This is terrible, and makes the Zune look way worse than the capable (but brown) music player it is. And Pete Mortensen over at the Cult of Mac makes a great point: “I had a music collection long before the iPod existed.”

Apple bites back at Laptop Hunter ads, ‘agrees’ with Microsoft that Macs are cool

Looks like Apple finally has something to say to Lauren, Giampaulo, Lisa, Jackson, and any future laptop hunters showcased in Microsoft’s new commercial series. In a statement to Macworld, spokesperson Bill Evans goes through the usual list of touted Mac features — security, stability, design — before quipping, “a PC is no bargain when it doesn’t do what you want.” Ouch. He continues by “agreeing” with Microsoft that, yes, everyone does think its computers are cool. We don’t expect Redmond’s ready to end the ad campaign anytime, and as enjoyable as this statement is, our only hope is that the gang at Cupertino ups the ante and retaliates tit-for-tat by sending Hodgman on an filmed adventure through Best Buy.

Third Windows Laptop Hunter Ad Picks a Sony Vaio Instead of a Mac (Obviously)

The third of the laptop hunter ads shows a mom and a kid, shopping for a computer under $1500. And yes, the clip takes yet another dump on Macs.

Not to repeat everything on the ad, but the kid picks a Sony Vaio because it has Blu-ray and because Macs are “a little small”, even though his mom says “they are pretty” before making the most disgusting face ever caught on video.

The mom seems to be happy to be getting a couple hundred bucks in cash, and the kid seems to be happy because hey, free computer. But in the end, does it really matter which OS you choose? Does it? You give me a $1500 blank check and I’ll pick a $200 Eee and buy $1300 worth of ice cream. That’s right, I haven’t had ice cream in a while. [Thanks Ravi!]

TiVo update brings pause menu ads to Series3 & TiVo HD owners

TiVo heard you liked ads, so it’s putting ads in your pause menu so you can watch ads while you skip ads. Already rolled out on older Series2 hardware last December, Dave Zatz posts that the 11.0c software update for Series3 / TiVo HD hardware brings the new “feature” of ads popping up while viewers are time shifting. That can show up as a “More information” prompt for some shows, as seen above, but will hold advertisements on certain programs. The prompt will only show up once per recording, but if this new form of advertising bugs you, TiVo Community user bfdtv instructs that permanently hiding the progress bar can be achieved by pressing pause, press down to hide the popup, press play again, then enter SELECT-PLAY-SELECT-PAUSE-SELECT, which can also be reversed by using the code again while watching a recording. Still, we doubt the ad skipping arms race will end here.

Someone Found Microsoft’s Lauren! And She’s an Actress

We were hoping to catch up with Microsoft’s “Lauren,” a regular gal who Microsoft surprised with $1,000 to buy a laptop…in a national commercial. And it ends up she’s an LA-based, SAG-eligible actress. UPDATE

Tracked down by TechFlash, “Lauren” (who is really Lauren De Long) says on her site “[she] booked what she thought was a “Market and Research” job regarding laptops. But that’s not all she booked…actually Lauren found out they were shooting a national commercial! Tears, laughter and excitement greeted this new development.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Microsoft test group had been assembled from “recruited prospective computer shoppers.” Shoppers are distinctly different from people looking for jobs. Regardless-

Reading through De Long’s resume, you find that her “special skills” include Cheerleading, Ear Prompter, Hula Hoop, and Stage Combat. So wait, she’s an actress AND a cheerleader AND a stage combatant, but she’s STILL not cool enough to use a Mac? No way. We just don’t buy it.

We were unable to reach Lauren De Long, but we did leave her a message mentioning one of our readers’ offers to give her a free 17-inch Apple PowerBook. When site TechFlash called, apparently De Long said she had signed an NDA restricting her from speaking about her experiences with the HP laptop.

UPDATE: Lauren De Long just returned our call. She said, “Thanks for tracking me down and everything…I’m humbled and honored by all the attention, but I’m trying to gracefully turn down any interviews.” She then confirmed that an NDA sealed her from talking about anything pertaining to the commercial (which means that our own Mitch is out of luck—Lauren can’t do any sort of Mac vs. HP value comparison). But we have good news, Mitch. A number of our readers wrote in letting us know that they’d be happy to take the laptop off your hands! [Lauren’s Site and Lauren’s Bio via TechFlash]
