NTT DoCoMo launching its own version of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10

WinMo and Android handsets from HTC, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and others that are designed for global reach typically don’t find their way into Japan for a number of reasons: localization, carriers’ draconian control over handset specs, unique market needs, the list goes on. Every once in a while, though, one’ll break through — take the Xperia X10, for example, which has now been announced for release on NTT DoCoMo simply as the “Smartphone Xperia,” making it the first major carrier anywhere to announce a branded deal on the set. It looks to be a pretty faithful carry-over of the same custom Android skin Sony Ericsson is launching elsewhere and features 7.2Mbps down / 2.0Mbps up, WiFi, an 8.1 megapixel cam, and availability in “Sensuous Black” and “Luster White.” It’ll be hitting in April — right about the same time we suspect it’ll be launching elsewhere.

Garmin-Asus taking wraps off first Android gear, M10 WinMo phone at MWC

It might be happening a little later than they’d originally hoped, but Garmin — through its partnership in Garmin-Asus — should finally be unveiling some Android-based phones pretty shortly in an effort to kickstart the firm’s weak showing thus far in the dog-eat-dog handset world. The VP of the mobile device business over at ASUS is talking up the joint venture’s 2010 plans this week, saying that it’ll show its first Android product at MWC next month with the hope of striking a pretty even balance between Android and WinMo shipments in the long term (no mention of the G60’s proprietary platform, interestingly). What’s more, they want to push a solid million units this year, and they’ll be looking to reach that goal by building somewhere between 4 and 5 models — at least one of which is likely destined for T-Mobile USA, as far as we can tell. Android isn’t the only thing on the docket for these guys at MWC, though: they’ll also be showing the M10, allegedly running Windows Mobile 6.5.3 with a 3.5-inch resistive display and a 5 megapixel camera with a retail price a little over $400. Finally, there are plans in the works for a TD-SCDMA phone for China Mobile that’d be available toward the tail end of the year — so all things considered, these guys might finally have a shot of making a dent in the market for once.

OPPO Enjoy looks like just another Android e-reader

Another day, another Android e-reader. We apologize for not sounding overly enthusiastic about this one, but going off of the picture of the OPPO Enjoy we don’t anticipate the 6-inch e-ink reader to be the next Kindle or Nook killer. The rest of the specs are unknown, though it looks like the main controls are the trackball on the right edge and touch navigation keys on the left. You know what, maybe we’re being too pessimistic. Perhaps the Enjoy really runs the next version of Android, is Tegra 2 powered and actually has a color display. Alright, that’s all very unlikely, but a reader can dream.

T-Mobile’s Fender edition myTouch 3G now available for $180

We’d already heard that T-Mobile’s new Fender edition myTouch 3G would be rolling out on January 20th, but we hadn’t had much indication about what sort of premium (if any) it would demand over the standard myTouch. Well, as you can see above, you will have to pay an extra $30 on top of the $150 the regular myTouch 3G currently demands (on-contract, naturally), but that will get you a bundled 16GB memory card, not to mention a genuine 3.5mm headphone jack, a few pre-loaded songs from Eric Clapton and others and, of course, that classy woodgrain finish. Not too shabby for an extra thirty bucks, if you ask us.

HTC Bravo gettin’ overexposed in the wild?

As breathtakingly bad as the picture is, what we’re looking at here could very well be the first shot of HTC’s upcoming Bravo in the wild — the industrial design lines up nicely with what we’ve seen in the company’s leaked roadmap, anyway, and that funky little optical pad in the center perfectly matches the component that you can clearly see on the Legend render. It’s said to be “near identical” to the Nexus One — which makes sense considering that we thought the Nexus One was the Bravo for a while — so the big draws here would have to be the removal of the trackball (we’re not complaining) and the Sense UI covering up Android 2.1’s default look. If 3 Sweden knew what it was talking about, this thing could be on shelves this quarter… so watch your back, MOTOROI.

Motorola launching 20-30 Android phones in 2010

Some interesting tidbits came out of Motorola’s DEXT launch in Singapore today — CNET Asia had a chance to sit down with Moto’s Asia Pacific VP Spiro Nikolakopoulos, who said that the company would launch between 20 to 30 Android phones globally in 2010. Spiro also said that not every phone would make it to every market, so we’re guessing the true number will be more like 10 if you count regional variants like the CLIQ and the DEXT as one model. Just by our count, Moto’s already pretty close: off the tops of our heads we’ve heard of the Shadow, the Devour, the Backflip, the Ruth, and several others destined for China — rather impressive for a company that was on the brink of collapse just a short while ago. No wonder it’s reconsidering that spinoff, eh?

[Thanks, Hiro]

ASUS’ Tegra-powered Eee Pad tablet to make sub-$500 Computex debut?

The first of June could see the introduction of the Eee Pad tablet if DigiTimes‘ proven ASUS sources are correct. The device has been rumored since early December and now appears to be heading to Computex Taipei for its big reveal with a price set below $500. The tablet was already rumored to feature a multitouch display, Tegra (Tegra 2, presumably) and an OS other than Windows CE. And with a name that sounds suspiciously like a feminine hygiene product for a robot, well, we’ll let you guess at which Google OS the Eee Pad will run.

Update: JKKMobile linked us to a video he shot of an ASUS concept tablet running Android on Tegra 2 at CES. Somehow we missed it… we blame the Waveface.

Rogers’ HTC Magic having 911 call problems on Rogers, too

Turns out it doesn’t matter if you took up Rogers on its offer to swap your Dream to a Magic after all, because the bug’s spreading: Canada’s first keyboardless Android set is confirmed to be suffering from the same dangerous malaise as its older brother. Basically, neither model can complete emergency calls to 911 with location-based services enabled, and until HTC is able to spit out a patch, the only fix is to disable GPS altogether — not exactly an awesome solution. In the meantime, a quick check of Rogers’ site confirms that both the Dream and Magic have been pulled from retail, so let’s hope this gets cleaned up on the double. And try not to have an emergency, of course. Ever… but especially right now.

3D maps demoed on Sony Ericsson X10, Snapdragon paying off

Ericsson Labs is showing off an API for navigating through a three-dimensional interpretation of the world based on real imagery powered by Saab spinoff (the defense firm, not the car company) C3 Technologies on Sony Ericsson’s upcoming X10 — and in a word, it’s looking impressive. The buttons for controlling the action are a bit hokey, of course, but don’t worry too much about that — this is strictly a proof of concept, and the important thing is that no matter how much panning, tilting, and swooping through the cityscape the demo-giver does, video output stays above 30 frames per second. Thank goodness for Snapdragon, eh? There’s no indication that we’ll see a shipping version of this app on retail X10s out of the box, but let’s hope something awesome comes of this. Follow the break for video.

Motorola MOTOROI demoed on video in very cozy quarters

You don’t typically get this close to your phone unless you’re about to put it against the side of your face, but hey, we figure a little intimate time with a device you use this much can’t hurt, now, can it? Here we’ve got one of the first high-def hands-on experiences of Motorola’s latest Android set, the MOTOROI, loaded with a Korean ROM in preparation for its upcoming launch on SK Telecom. As if on cue, the very first thing the user tests is the browser’s multitouch support, revealing that performance could be an issue here — even on the phone’s OMAP3 core — but the good news is that the presence of Blur doesn’t seem to cause the home screen to stutter like we’ve seen on the CLIQ and DEXT. All things considered, the odd hump on the bottom right edge doesn’t seem as dramatic in the reals as it does in press photos, which we’d say is a good thing — particularly considering the latest talk that we’ll see this sucker launch all over the world over the next few months. Follow the break for the full video.

[Thanks, Omar]
