Acer Liquid A1 hits the FCC with AT&T’s HSDPA flavors

It’s already selling in Europe with one of AT&T’s 3G bands, but the prospect of a US-friendly Acer Liquid A1 just got real, governmental-involvement style. The FCC has approved a 850 / 1900MHz version of the Android device, and while this is no guarantee of an AT&T berth — much of Canada is crowding in on this spectrum, not to mention the possibility of selling the phone unlocked and unsubsidized — we’re massaging our temples this very second with the appropriate good vibrations to get this thing out and about in the States and on the cheap.

ODROID, the Android gaming handheld, now shipping to Android gaming developers (video)

ODROID, the Android gaming handheld, now shipping to Android gaming developers

Did you get your ODROID order in promptly when they went up for pre-sale back in September? Hope so, as the first lucky developers should be getting theirs any day now. Just 300 units of the 833MHz handheld are shipping, including the various cables, additional hardware, and documentation needed to start filling the thing with fun games that look an awful lot like other games, but totally aren’t. One of the first is Speed Forge 3D (which totally isn’t Wipeout), shown after the break exhibiting some laggy accelerometer-based controls — but 720p output via HDMI sure is sweet. Orders are still being accepted at $349, said to be shipping in roughly five days, meaning if Santa logs into his PayPal account quickly enough you might still find one of these under your tree.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

RAmos W7 in the wild and looking good

We’ve seen some video of the RAmos W7 running Android (with some pep), but these new photos of the device out and about are pretty promising. An Android slate with a 4.8-inch screen in a thinner-than-an-iPhone form factor? Look out, Archos 5. Hit up the source link for the rest.

[Thanks, Steve]

Motorola Milestone’s ad campaign less likely to leave you in a bloody heap than Droid’s

Motorola’s European version of the Droid — the Milestone — is on the verge of release in the UK, so it’s not surprising to see ads starting to pop up. This is the first we’ve seen, and we’ll say that the approach is… interesting. In contrast to the over the top, explosive (literally — did you see that banana?!) Verizon Droid ads, the Milestone ad is all about information, delivered in a soothing, sophisticated tone. “Intelligence and versatility converge” here, and we have to say we much prefer this approach over the it’s a “frickin’ robot” one taken by Verizon. Decide for yourself — the video is after the break.

How To Manually Update Your Motorola Droid

IMG_9566.JPG

Are you still waiting for Verizon to send Android 2.0.1 to your Motorola Droid? Starting December 7th, Verizon started rolling out an over-the-air update to a select number of Droid owners. Today, December 10th, Verizon is expected to begin sending out updates to 200,000 handsets per day. If you can’t wait, though, AllDroid has posted a walkthrough on how to update your Droid manually. Basically, you need to download a file, save it to the Droid’s microSD card, and then run the file from the Droid.

I followed the instructions to install the update: The entire process is painless and takes around 5 minutes. My Droid has been running fine ever since. Hit the jump for images!

eviGroup’s Wallet tablet/MID gets two-tone redesign, January release date

eviGroup's Wallet tablet/MID gets two-tone redesign, initial production run

Sure, it was highly derivative of the iPhone, but we liked the styling on those eviGroup Wallet prototypes that the company teased us with a few months back. So, we’re ever so slightly disappointed to see the new aesthetic in the latest (and, apparently, final) revision of the hardware above. That it’s grown a front-facing webcam is a good thing, but the two-tone look in this shot makes that bezel look a bit chunky and not entirely lust-worthy. (The rendered shots at the read link look better, but then they always do.) The good news is it’s said to be ready for production ahead of a January release and, with Dell seemingly joining the fray with its own Android-powered five-inch tablet/MID device, that date had better not slip.

Tablet Wars: Episode V – Dell Strikes Back at CES?

A few days ago in a land a few time zones away, one tablet became another and, just for a moment, stopped everyone speculating about Apple’s entry into the decidedly fledgling market segment. According to Pocket-lint Dell is similarly jumping aboard, said to be set to unveil a five-inch tablet running Android, specs that would put it right up in the Archos Internet Tablet’s grill and, thankfully, should mean a much lower price-point than the Joojoo. Word is we’ll all be getting a glimpse of the thing at CES next month, and knowing Dell it’ll probably be a very fleeting one. We’re guessing this is the Streak, but would love to be surprised by something entirely new.

Acer Liquid A1 unboxed, video style

The Acer Liquid A1 just started shipping in the UK, and right on cue we’ve got a video unboxing. Turns out the box housing the 1GHz Snapdragon-powered Android set is fairly interesting itself, with a magnetic hinged design that opens to reveal the charger, manuals, and bundled 2GB SanDisk microSD card and SD adapter. As for the phone, don’t hold out for an Android 2.0 surprise — it’s running Android 1.6 with Acer’s custom Spinlets UI skin on top, which equals a frowny-face from us. Hopefully Acer manages to update things if this guy ever comes to the States, but for now we’ll just let you head past the break and check the video for yourselves — we’re sorry about the terrible Owl City soundtrack, but we had nothing to do with it.

[Thanks, Shreedhan]
