Zinio brings Tegra hardware acceleration to Honeycomb tablets

Zinio’s smartphone and tablet apps make it easy to bring a lifetime’s worth of magazine content with you on the go, but performance has been inconsistent, especially when navigating through pages or zooming into photos and text. The company’s latest app improves upon both critical elements, however, taking advantage of the Nvidia Tegra chip in your Mototola Xoom or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to smooth out page transitions and pinch-to-zoom. Nvidia posted a side-by-side comparison video demonstrating the improvements on a pair of Xooms, and there’s clearly a noticeable difference. You can try it out for yourself by downloading Zinio version 1.10.3641 from the Android Market, or jump past the break for the demo.

Mac OS X 10.6.8 update now available

It looks like Apple’s getting another fix in before Lion slinks on to the scene. Mac OS X 10.6.8 is now available for download, and brings with it a number of “general operating system fixes,” including further support for IPv6, improved VPN reliability, and removal of known variants of Mac Defender. It also promises to fix a glitch that has Preview randomly shutting down, and will get the App Store ready to roar for when Lion lands on the scene. We’re getting it going on our laptop at home. If you’ve done the same, let us know how it’s working out for you.

Viacom sues Cablevision over its TV-streaming Optimum for iPad app

A day after Viacom took a break from courtroom battling over Time Warner Cable’s iPad app, the media giant has filed a lawsuit against Cablevision over the Optimum for iPad app. Viacom wants a revised agreement before it sees its content appear on new screens, but Cablevision claims that cable service on the iPad is the same as on any TV. While their lawyers argue over the details you can check out the complaint from Viacom in the PDF linked below, or peruse official statements from both companies after the break.

Bluetooth SIG takes aim at sensor market, adds Apple and Nordic to board of directors

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (aka Bluetooth SIG) has some fairly grand plans for the future of its wireless technology, and it’s now recruited some big players to help get it there. The group announced yesterday that it’s added both Apple and Nordic Semiconductor to its board of directors — companies that it says will help it “drive Bluetooth technology’s expansion into platform and sensor markets.” In particular, the group is setting its sights on wireless health sensors, which it hopes to finally gain a real foothold in thanks the lower power requirements of the Bluetooth 4.0 standard, and thanks to the experience of Nordic, which has a long history of working with such devices. Full press release is after the break.

Apple granted patent for ‘portable multifunction devices’ with multitouch screens

Apple

Avid watchers of tech know that Apple is almost as good at requesting patents (though, its record of defending them is somewhat less impressive) as it is at actually creating compelling products. Three years after initially filing for the design of a “portable multifunction device” with a multitouch interface, the USPTO has awarded the Cupertino crew a patent that’s sure to raise few eyebrows amongst its competitors. At a glance, the language seems to cover practically any device that allows touch input to control content in a frame on a webpage independent of controlling the rest of the page — which we’re sure Jobs and co. are excited to add to their growing stockpile of claims to gestures and capacitive displays. Of course, a rival would have to infringe on all elements of a patent’s independent claims before it’d need to fear the courtroom, so it’s probably best not to get too hot and bothered here. For those looking to pore over the specifics, that source link is a good place to head.

Apple granted broad patent for ‘portable multifunction devices’ with multitouch screens

Apple

Avid watchers of tech know that Apple is almost as good at requesting patents (though, its record of defending them is somewhat less impressive) as it is at actually creating compelling products. Three years after initially filing for the design of a “portable multifunction device” with a multitouch interface, the USPTO has awarded the Cupertino crew a rather broadly worded patent that’s sure to raise few eyebrows amongst its competitors. The language could easily be interpreted to cover practically any device with a multitouch screen, be it tablet or smartphone — which we’re sure Jobs and co. are excited to add to their growing stockpile of claims to gestures and capacitive displays. Whether or not Apple actually uses its recently granted patent to go lawsuit loony against its market rivals remains to be seen but, chances are, it’ll stay quiet for the time being — those battles with Sammy and Lodsys are already consuming plenty of precious resources.

Why the Apple HDTV Rumor Won’t (and Maybe Shouldn’t) Die

It’s a rumor as insidious as cicadas and even more annoying: the Apple Television. Not another Apple TV box. A full-fledged, high-def, wall-mounted monster straight out of Cupertino. And while it’s always seemed unlikely, the murmurs and the rumblings won’t stop. Is it possible that this time they’re actually onto something? More »

Rumor Repeat: iPhone 5 Lands September With Faster A5 Chip

Apple plans to launch a new iPhone in September that brings the handset up to speed with the iPad 2 tablet, according to reports.

The fifth-generation iPhone will include the faster A5 processor that debuted in the iPad 2 in April as well as an 8-megapixel camera, according to Bloomberg, who cites “two people familiar with the product.”

The rumor comes in line with previous reports that hinted a September debut for an iPhone 5 equipped with an A5 chip and 8-megapixel camera sensor.

Previous rumors added that the iPhone 5 will have a flat metal back as well as “curved” cover glass (possibly to improve comfort) and will become available on the T-Mobile and Sprint networks, in addition to AT&T and Verizon.

The iPhone is Apple’s best-selling product, accounting for the majority of the company’s overall revenues. Traditionally, Apple has released new iPhones every summer around June or July. However, the February release of the Verizon iPhone and the April release of the white iPhone 4 may have compelled Apple to wait until September to give the products a longer shelf life.

Philips Fidelio Speakers with AirPlay hands-on (video)

Traditional speaker docks are so 2010. This year, AirPlay is in, and Philips was on hand to demo five new wireless speaker models at the CEA LineShows in NYC, set to roll out beginning later this month through the holiday season. Its flagship Fidelio SoundSphere DS9800W will ship in June with a price tag of about $800, but didn’t appear willing to pair with the iPhone Philips had on hand at the show. We did go ears-on with the more affordable DS8800W, however, which filled the small demo room with deep, rich Fire and Rain, sans-wires — and can do the same in your own home when it ships for $400 beginning next month. That model isn’t nearly as sleek as the non-functional SoundSphere, or its smaller DS6800W counterpart, which will hit stores in time for the holidays with a $500 MSRP. Philips also showed off its 360-degree DS3881W and compact AD7000W — both of which also include AirPlay support, and will ship for $330 and $230, respectively, by the holiday season. Jump past the break for a look at all five models.
