UMEC’s Android videophone and MID prototypes stray from the beaten path

We’ve seen plenty of odd Android permutations, but UMEC seems to be striving to do something all its own. It’s showing two devices it currently has in the works, one is a videophone / hub / DECT phone / etc. unit (pictured), which might be at home on a countertop, while the other is a brightly hued MID, with similar internal specs but more portable aims. Both are running ARM Cortex A8 processors (like the iPhone 3GS), though there’s some significant OS optimization to be done: everything was incredibly sluggish on the videophone, and the MID was locked up at the time we dropped by. UMEC also doesn’t have the touchscreen drivers working for either device, though the good news is that they’re looking at both capacitive and resistive touchscreens, based on what the reseller that picks these up desires. Luckily, the videophone has USB plugs galore (along with plenty of Ethernet jacks) so we were able to get a quick demo of the device using a mouse and keyboard. The MID also has a full-size USB plug, and both devices sport HDMI out, so the end usage for both of these is really up in the air. Check ’em out on video after the break.

Sharp’s 5-inch PC-Z1 NetWalker honors Zaurus legacy with touchscreen Ubuntu

Fanboys have been running Ubuntu on Sharp’s deceased Zaurus lineup of PDAs for years. Now Sharp makes it official with the launch of this 5-inch, 1024 x600 TFT LCD touchscreen NetWalker smartbook, aka the PC-Z1. It’s not a Zaurus per se, but the compact 161.4 x 108.7 x 19.7 ~ 24.8mm / 409g device certainly resurrects its ghost. Underpinning the device is an 800MHz Freescale i.MX515 CPU built around the ARM Cortex-A8 architecture, 512MB of memory, 4GB of on-board flash storage (with microSDHC expansion for another 16GB), 802.11b/g WiFi, 2x USB, and QWERTY keyboard going 68 percent of full-size. Sorry, no 3G data. The PC-Z1 features a 3-second quick launch, non-removable 10-hour battery, and is purposely positioned by Sharp as a taint — it ain’t quite a smartphone and ‘t ain’t quite a laptop. Good luck with that Sharp. The device is expected to hit Japan on September 25th for ¥44,800. That’s about $479 whenever it might come Stateside.

It’s worth noting that the current US ban on the import of BGA-packaged products like Freescale’s i.MX processors should not affect the import of the PC-Z1 as Akihabara News contends. As we understand it, that ban affects the import of the chips, not the systems using them and assembled elsewhere. Otherwise, Amazon wouldn’t be selling its Kindle, dig?

Nokia following Booklet 3G with ARM-based smartbook in mid-2010?

Those semiconductor semi-gossipers at DigiTimes want you to know that Nokia’s not stopping with the Booklet 3G and in fact has an ARM-based smartbook set for mass consumption in the middle of 2010. According to its sources, Espoo’s in the process of settling with ODMs now, and the speculation is that it’ll go to either Compal or Foxconn (a.k.a. Hon Hai Precision Industry). If all of this sounds familiar, that’s because it is: we’ve heard multiple reports this year that suggested a smartbook / MID with either a multicore ARM Cortex A9 Sparrow chip or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor. We’re not discounting it, especially considering that netbook bit panned out, but mid-2010 is quite a ways off — no telling when we’ll be hearing anything else on the matter.

Liquidware announces modular, scalable Arm-based motherboards

If your idea of fun is developing software for obscure computing platforms, then you’re probably already down with Liquidware. It seems that Arduino-based projects like the GamePack and OpenBerry have become a little too easy for the gang, so they’ve decided to embark on a little project to revolutionize computers by “turning them inside out,” so to speak. The Illuminato X Machina is a 4-inch square upon which sits a 72MHz ARM-based microprocessor, a dedicated EEPROM chip for data storage, RAM, LEDs for output, and 14 I/O pins that line each of its four sides — in short, a fully functional computer. The true magic of the operation, however, lies in the fact that these things are designed to cluster together, with each cell operating in parallel. “Like living organisms,” it says at the group’s website, the cells are “social.” They autonomously communicate, distribute processing power and programming, and even isolate faulty neighbors — when one of the cells crashes, it won’t bring the whole cluster down with it. Snapdragon and Tegra smartbook rumors swirl before likely year end push

DigiTimes is reporting — in its usual sourceless, rumorific way — that a slew of Taiwanese manufacturers are set to deliver smartbooks based on the Snapdragon and Tegra chipsets by the fourth quarter of this year. Acer is leading the charge with an Android-sporting device, adding to its push of the Google mobile OS, while Mobinnova has confirmed US and European orders for its 8.9-inch élan, shipments of which might top half a million units in 2009. In the meantime, Inventec is expected to launch a 10-inch Tegra smartbook entitled Rainbow, which is probably set for a prompt rebadge. On the other hand, citing what it sees as weak demand, ASUS is holding back and won’t launch anything until November at the earliest. While none of these rumors are massively surprising, and given the source could be downright erroneous, they do hint at a wild, industry-wide synergy of smartbook rollout for the holiday period. And we all love synergy.

Neuros OSD 3 in development, makers want your input

Neuros has earned significant kudos with techies for its hackable OSD media player / recorder and its commitment to open source software. It’s no surprise then to see the company reaching out to its loyal community for input on what should be found in the third generation of the device. Yes, technically the OSD 2 isn’t even out of the developer kit stage yet, but Neuros is planning well ahead of time, with the 3.0 model unlikely to be seen for another 18 months. Founder Joe Born has confirmed a continuing partnership with Texas Instruments on an ARM-based unit, which should be able to play and record at 1080p / 60 with support for all the relevant formats and containers. There’ll be a minimum of 2GB DDR3 RAM, as well as a HTML5- and Flash-compliant browser, but the rest of the specs are up to you — if there’s some killer feature you simply must have, hit the read link and let Neuros know.

Samsung announces world’s fastest Cortex A8 core, iPhone 3GS frowns a little

Some of the most advanced mobile devices on the market today are built around cores based on ARM’s Cortex A8 architecture, including a couple you may be familiar with: the Palm Pre and the iPhone 3GS. The 3GS, for example, runs a Samsung S5PC100 system-on-chip clipping along at a healthy 600MHz, enough to make it noticeably snappier than the 3G it replaces — but time marches relentlessly forward, as always, and that S5PC100 is suddenly starting to look a little long in the tooth with today’s news. Sammy has partnered up with silicon design firm Intrinsity to develop what it’s billing as the world’s fastest Cortex A8 core, a 1GHz unit codenamed “Hummingbird” that’s based on 45nm manufacturing techniques and can deliver peak performance at a single volt with power consumption characteristics favorable for mobile use. Translation: this thing should be nipping at the heels of Snapdragon once Samsung finishes up work turning this core into a system-on-chip that can be sourced by manufacturers, and it should do so without causing batteries to beg for mercy. Unfortunately, there’s no word just yet on exactly when we’ll see phones running this setup in the market, so Pre, 3GS, you’re safe for now — but the clock’s ticking.

Apple tablet rumored for launch early next year, for serious this time: seriously

After what AppleInsider claims has been four years of development “riddled with setbacks,” Apple is purportedly finalizing its long-rumored tablet for an early 2010 launch. AppleInsider claims to have been tracking the device get bounced back to the drawing board repeatedly over the past few years, but says that Steve Jobs is finally happy with the product and there’s an internal go-ahead to get this thing ready for next year, barring any other setbacks. Purported specs include a 10-inch screen, 3G data and a custom ARM processor courtesy of its P.A. Semi purchase — after previously considering Intel’s Atom, as the story goes. Rumors elsewhere point to Verizon data instead of AT&T, but that might just be wishful thinking. While AppleInsider still claims the device is positioned somewhere between an iPhone and a laptop, its inside sources apparently didn’t give the thumbs up to early artist renditions of the handheld, and so AI‘s new and “improved” render is above — striking fear in the heart of aesthetes everywhere.

Sure, we’ve heard so many iterations of Apple tablet rumors over the years, with varying degrees of confidence behind them, that it’s really hard to latch onto yet another promise of this supposedly inevitable device. Still, this is what it is: a decent rumor with some reasonable excuses for “delays” and a glorious promise of tablet nirvana right around the corner. What more could an Apple rumorphile want?

Why Intel’s Processors Aren’t Big on Cellphones

Under the hood of most netbooks lies a tiny Intel Atom chip. Intel’s low-power processor has fast become the silicon of choice for tiny computers — but not cellphone makers. Until last week’s Nokia-Intel partnership, most handset makers showed almost no interest in the world’s biggest maker of PC processors.

Meanwhile, Intel rival ARM, whose chips are packaged and sold through companies such as Qualcomm, Samsung and Texas Instruments, has gained nearly 90 percent of the cellphone processor market.

“Traditionally cellphones have been designed on the ARM processor and it is not easy to change it,” says Jack Gold, principal analyst with consulting firm J. Gold Associates. “And cellphone makers don’t want to. ARM-based chips have a significant advantage over the current generation Atom processors for quite a few reasons.”

Intel is being held back in the mobile sphere by its inability to offer power consumption on par with ARM’s chips, say analysts. Add to that the notion that Atom is untested for mobile phones and the fact that many proprietary mobile-phone operating systems are not compatible with Intel’s x86 architecture, and it makes breaking into the cellphone market an uphill climb.

It’s not for want of trying. Over the past few years, Intel has tried to crack open the mobile market with the XScale technology, before selling it to Marvell in 2006. Last month, Intel said it will buy Wind River Systems, a company that creates software for embedded applications in small consumer electronics and cars.

Now Intel is betting that the next version of the Atom family, which it plans to release in early 2010, will further its plans to get into phones. Also, Intel’s partnership with Nokia could result in a new chipset architecture targeted at mobile devices, the two companies say, although they have not provided any details.

Intel says it is isn’t concerned about its lack of a mobile foothold in the market today. It’s looking to the future. The current generation of Atom processor was never meant to go on cellphones, says Pankaj Kedia, a director in Intel’s ultra mobility group. Instead the company is counting on ‘Moorestown,’ the next generation of Atom processor to please cellphone manufacturers.

“Atom today is not suitable for cellphones,” acknowledges Kedia. “But Moorestown will deliver the same level of performance as today’s Atom but with a 50x reduction in idle power and a 3x reduction in power when you are playing 720p video.”

Intel needs to grab a slice of the cellphone market as its traditional turf — PCs — shrinks. Research firm Gartner expects PC sales for 2009 to reach 257 million units worldwide, while 269.1 million cellphones were sold in the first quarter of 2009 alone.  Though smartphones, which require powerful processors, are still a small percentage of the overall phones market, it is a fast growing segment.

“There is no doubt that Intel wants to be in the cellphone business,” says Gold. “We are talking about a category where it can sell hundreds of millions of chips a year.”

Unlike PCs, where power management is important but not a deal-breaker, cellphones are all about the battery life. Though the latest smartphones offer advanced audio, video and picture capabilities, customers still expect long battery life from their phones.  And unlike in the PC business where Intel has to contend with just one big rival in the form of AMD, a number of companies have sprung up offering repackaged ARM processors.

The current ARM Cortex-A8 is shipping in the new PalmPre (using Texas Instruments OMAP 3430), the new iPhone 3GS (using Samsung’s version). Qualcomm’s SnapDragon chip also based on the Cortex-A8 instruction set has been announced in Toshiba’s new smartphone.

Independent benchmarks on ARM vs. Atom power consumption are hard to come by. Both Intel and ARM use their own marketing spin to prove one is superior to the other, depending on whose brochure you are reading at the moment.

But analysts are clear that ARM right now ranks much well ahead of Intel Atom.

Consider these numbers for a moment (from ARM). For a 1000 mAH battery, the Intel Atom Z500 Atom processor running at 800 MHz offers 19 hours of sleep time and overall battery life of 7 hours. An ARM Cortex-A8 at 800 MHz offers weeks of sleep time and 6.9 days of average battery life — an order of magnitude greater..

“Of course Intel will argue that this is based on the current N270 Atom, not Moorestown,” says  Will Strauss, principal analyst at market research firm Forward Concepts. “And ARM will respond with ‘by the time Moorestown rolls out, we’ll have clients shipping Cortex-A9 based processors, and they will be even more lower-power’,” says Strauss.

Details about the upcoming platform’s power consumption and management capabilities are scarce. Intel has said the Moorestown platform consumes up to 10 percent lower less idle power compared to current Atom based processors. But there’s not enough detail to satisfy analysts.

“We don’t have a sample of Moorestown,” says Strauss. “All we have are Intel’s statements that keep changing and are rather hazy around the details.”

Even if Intel can deliver a successful cellphone chip in Moorestown, finding a foothold in the cellphone market won’t be easy, says Strauss. “A lot of the cellphone OS and software is not ported on to x86,” he says. “Doing that will take time and commitment from handset manufacturers.”

Strauss estimates it could take up to two years to get handset makers get their OS operating systems compatible with Atom. Intel says handset manufacturers may never have to, since it is working on Moblin, a new operating system targeted at pocket-sized devices.

“We don’t think today’s phone operating systems are the right ones,” says Kedia. “They were written for voice phones, not for next generation smartphones and that’s our pitch with Moblin.”

It’s an extremely ambitious goal and for now the odds are not in Intel’s favor.  “If they ship a chip for cellphones next year, it won’t be substantial,” says Strauss.

NVIDIA says Windows CE is better for smartbooks than Android

There may be some folks out there talking up Android as the OS of choice of smartbooks, but it looks like you can’t count NVIDIA among them. Speaking with ComputerWorld, NVIDIA’s Mike Rayfield (general manager of the company’s mobile business unit) says that NVIDIA actually prefers Windows CE over Android for ARM-based smartbooks due to its maturity and lack of a “rough user interface.” To that end, Rayfield also confirmed that NVIDIA is working with Microsoft to optimize Windows CE for Tegra-based systems although, as we’ve seen, that hasn’t stopped some folks from pairing Android with Tegra whether NVIDIA likes it or not. Incidentally, Rayfield was also asked about those rumors about Tegra powering the Zune HD, and he didn’t exactly issue a flat out denial, saying simply that, “Microsoft hasn’t confirmed that … so until they comment, I can’t.”
