Look What The iPhone Did To ATTs Network

iphonechart.jpgHave a moment of pity for AT&T. It’s a well-known fact that the iPhone completely norked their data network, with iPhone users sucking down megabytes in some major metros until AT&T’s pipes ran dry. How sharp was the data uptake? Take a gander at this chart from AT&T CTO John Donovan’s CTIA show keynote this morning. (Click on the graphic to see a larger version.)

Over the past two and a half years, demand for data on AT&T’s network has increased 18 times, he said. Donovan tried to avoid blaming the iPhone for all of the data traffic – he called out other “smart integrated devices” as well. But it would be interesting to see the same chart from the other three major carriers; I’d guess that the line isn’t quite as sharp.

Why the FCC’s Got AT&T and Verizon Scared Shitless

Remember net neutrality? Over a year after Comcast’s torrent-killing ways turned it into a rallying cry for chest-slapping geek solidarity, it’s back. But this time, it’s got AT&T and Verizon scared shitless—and it might actually screw us over.

A quick refresher: Net neutrality is, simply, the principle that all data gets treated the same by an ISP or service, whether it’s incoming email or HD videos of dudes getting socked in the nuts by a 4-year-old on YouTube. A real-world example of very non-neutral behavior would be what got Comcast slapped by the FCC: specifically sabotaging torrents.

Theoretically, this could go beyond policing piracy, for instance if, say, Time Warner competitively blocked or slowed down Hulu, or if Verizon struck a deal with Google to give its data priority over traffic from Bing, so people using Google would get a way better experience than people using Bing. Streaming video is a not-so-coincidental theoretical example, since the explosion of video traffic is what the ISPs say is swallowing up all of the internet.

The end result of the threat of government-mandated net neutrality regulations for ISPs was a mixed “win” for consumers: AT&T, Comcast and Time Warner all responded with monthly data caps on their internet service in at least some of their markets. (Comcast limited it in all markets.)

As for the FCC telling ISPs to be more explicit about network management practices, Comcast started straight-up telling people heavy internet users would have their entire connections slowed down. While they suck for consumers, these are all “net neutral” practices, since no particular kind of data is discriminated against. The net neutrality debate fizzled down, though in some ways people were worse off than before.

With a new president, comes a new FCC chair, Julian Genachowski. Unlike his predecessor, who regularly reamed the cable industry but was a little too snuggly with the telecoms and against “hard and fast” net-neutrality rules, Genachowski is all about rules for everybody. Including the wireless carriers.

As you’re probably well aware, mobile broadband is treated way differently than the internet that’s piped into your house. It’s considered fragile. There’s far less of it to go around, with a less developed infrastructure and limited wireless spectrum to use. The rules for using it are tighter, like dating a nun. Restrictions abound, like no p2p. You don’t want the network to break, after all. That’s why, for instance, AT&T previously blocked Skype and SlingPlayer from running on 3G on the iPhone—and continues to block Sling—and why Apple rejects every torrent app that even tries to cross into the App Store.

In the past weeks, Genachowski has made it clear that he thinks that should change, that openness should “apply to the Internet however accessed.” He’s not saying they shouldn’t be able to manage the network to make sure it runs smoothly, to be clear. But if you were scratching your head about why AT&T conceded and opened their network up to VoIP on the iPhone, look no further than this nugget from Genachowski, from a speech he gave three weeks ago:

We’ve already seen some clear examples of deviations from the Internet’s historic openness. We have witnessed certain broadband providers unilaterally block access to VoIP applications (phone calls delivered over data networks)…”

AT&T very much does not want the government to tell it how to run its networks, particularly the mobile one. AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega this week responded pretty clearly to the FCC’s plans:

“Before we begin ‘fixing’ what isn’t broken, we need to be thoughtful about the consequences. We believe the marketplace today is vibrant, and there is no need to burden the mobile Internet with onerous new regulations.”

So what’s going to happen?

Well, the FCC is clear about what it thinks. This week, at a wireless telecom conference, Genachowski reiterated that net neutrality should apply to mobile broadband too. If those regulations pass, we’ll likely see the same thing we saw with the landline providers: Caps (not just on 3G cards like there are now) and “transparent” network management. Goodbye unlimited mobile broadband like the iPhone has. You will pay for every ounce of data that you use. And if you’re “crowding” the network by downloading a bunch of stuff, you’re gonna get slowed down because that’s the easy “net neutral” way to keep users in check. How much better is that, really?

So iPhone users, enjoy your “unlimited” wireless connections now. Pay-per-byte data—for both wired and wireless broadband networks—may well be the road we’re going down. Verizon is the last major landline broadband provider who has held back from capping or throttling its services (looove my FiOS), but even its CTO says that eventually, “we are going to reach a point where we will sell packages of bytes.”

Hopefully those packages will come cheap.

BlackBerry Bold 2 to be announced October 21 for T-Mobile, AT&T

We have it on good authority that T-Mobile and AT&T both currently plan on announcing the Bold 2 — also known as the Onyx — on October 21. As a refresher, this would be the touchpad-driven piece with model number 9700 that’s been making the rounds on the leak circuit the past few months, a fitting successor to a device that virtually every celebrity this side of Merle Haggard has been photographed carrying at once point or another. What we don’t know is pricing or retail launch date, but at least this gives us a pretty hard target for when we can expect details — so start cleaning out that Bold trackball, because you’re going to have something to eBay here pretty shortly.

Caption contest: Big Four’s CEOs finally united by a very large check

The CEOs of Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile — Lowell McAdam, Ralph de la Vega, Dan Hesse, and Robert Dotson — came together on stage for a fleeting moment at CTIA today to present a $1 million donation to nonprofit organization One Economy. It was a PR opportunity, yes, but what was really going on in their minds?

Chris: “Dan, seriously, will you come off the stilts for 20 seconds?”
Nilay: “One Economy will of course have to pay a $40,000 activation fee.”
Joe: “Not to be outdone, Boost Mobile extends One Economy a gift certificate for one free Kid Cudi ringtone.”
Josh T.: “Here, enjoy 0.1 percent of our collective salary.”
Richard: “Do you think they’re standing in order of who has the most bars?”

Dell bringing Mini 3i Android set to AT&T?

Dell, Android, and AT&T have been mentioned in an awful lot of whispered sentences over the past few months, so today’s Wall Street Journal report on a Round Rock-sourced Android set for Ma Bell isn’t exactly a huge surprise. Apparently Dell’s making some tweaks to the Chinese-market Mini 3i in preparation for a 2010 Stateside launch — obviously the China Mobile-specific OPhone build would have to go away in favor of full-flavored Android, and we’d bet that WiFi and a nicer camera make their way into the casing as well. That’s really all we know for now, but we’re sure Dell’s soon to hold an 8AM event where some random exec will pull it out of his pocket for 10 seconds before putting it away and announcing Inspiron laptops can now be ordered with giant Affliction dragon logos painted on them. You just keep doing what you do, Dell.

ATT Allows VoIP Over 3G for iPhone

AT&T has announced an official change in a policy which has frustrated iPhone users ever since the handset got a 3G data connection. Previously, if you wanted to use Skype or another Voice over IP application to make free calls, you had to do it over Wi-Fi. AT&T wouldn’t let you use the 3G data connection at all.

Now, in a filing to the FCC, AT&T has relented, and iPhone owners will be able to make calls without ever using the phone part of the iPhone again:

[…] We also stated that we were taking a fresh look at the issue and would promptly notify the Commission of any such change in our policies. AT&T has completed its review of the matter and today we informed Apple that, effective immediately, AT&T consents to Apple enabling third-party VoIP applications for the iPhone that use our wireless network, including our 2G and 3G capabilities.

Aside from being great news for Skype and Vonage users, this is an interesting development. The general thought has been that AT&T didn’t want always-available VoIP because it would eat into its core business as a telephone company. The well known 3G congestion on AT&T’s network has also been suspected. This has all been upturned, for voice communications at least.

The new policy is limited to VoIP. Speaking to Ars Technica, AT&T said that it would still not be allowing video streaming or other high-bandwidth applications over 3G, including the currently gelded SlingPlayer. One day we may see it, but the Death Star moves slowly.

Kindle Goes International — With a Little Help From ATT

Although Amazon’s Kindle e-reader has become the first major hit in its category — and the best-selling product in Amazon’s entire store this year — it does have its drawbacks. One of the biggest is that its wireless connection to the Kindle store works only in the U.S.

That changes on October 19, when Amazon begins shipping a new version of the Kindle that can be used to purchase and download books in over 100 countries. The new version, with the snappy name of “Kindle with US and International Wireless,” will sell for $280 and can be pre-ordered now.

The current version will still be for sale, and Amazon is dropping the price from $300 to $260. The bigger Kindle DX is unchanged.

As Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos explains it in a phone interview with Wired, “The two Kindles are identical, except for the radio.” The new device does not sync with Sprint, which was previously the exclusive supplier for Amazon’s Whispernet technology. Instead, it works with AT&T’s wireless network, which has the global reach that Amazon needs for its international plans.

This seems to push Sprint out of the long-term Kindle picture. Won’t everybody want to spend 20 bucks more on the AT&T version that that works all around the world, even if a cross-border trip isn’t on the immediate horizon? “I would!” says Bezos. Indeed, having a Kindle that downloads from overseas means you can get your favorite newspapers and magazines delivered instantly, at the same cost you pay at home.

It makes the Kindle a travel guide, too: If you want the lowdown on a Kyoto temple, or are wondering where to get the best fries in Amsterdam, you can download a relevant guide on the spot. And for the first time, the Lonely Planet series will be sold on Kindle, along with the previously available travel books from Frommer, Rick Steves and Michelin. No wonder the Amazon press release has an ecstatic quote from AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson and not a word from Sprint honcho (and vanity TV pitchman) Dan Hesse.

Other unhappy people may include owners of current Kindles who travel internationally: Their gadgets can’t be switched to AT&T versions. Bezos suggests that they give away or resell their Kindles (first-gen Kindles are currently going for around $190) and buy new ones. Those who bought a Kindle in the last 30 days can exchange them for the international version. Maybe the biggest gripes will come from those who bought the most expensive Kindle, the supersized DX. Imagine sitting in a Paris bistro with your US-download-only $490 DX and watching some tourist with a puny $280 Kindle filling up with newspapers, Michelin guides and the latest Michael Connelly thriller.

The international Kindle is not just for Americans traveling abroad. Bezos says that Amazon’s sales patterns show a sizable demand for English language books in countries that speak other languages. Until now, readers in those countries have found such books to be expensive and hard to find, not to mention slow to arrive after being ordered. The global Kindle will make the process cheap and instant.

Amazon staved off copyright problems by negotiating an arrangement with English language publishers that pays royalties depending on the territory of purchase. (If you buy a copy of The Perfect Thing in London, for instance, the UK publisher Ebury press gets the sale, instead of US publisher Simon & Schuster.) Still, the rights clearances aren’t yet comprehensive; of the 350,000 books in the Kindle store, only around 200,000 will be available in some countries.

While I had Bezos on the phone, I asked him about some other e-book issues. He wouldn’t comment on Amazon’s filing against the the Google Books settlement. Nor would he respond to Google’s comment that Amazon was being hypocritical in its objection. He also had nothing to add to the apology he gave to Kindle users for the company’s abrupt and scary retraction of copies of a Orwell’s 1984.

But he did have a response to a recent strategy employed by publishers of books expected to be mega-sellers, like Teddy Kennedy’s True Compass and Sarah Palin’s upcoming memoir, Going Rogue. The respective publishers think that withholding lower-cost Kindle versions for a few months will boost hardcover sales. Bezos believes this is short-sighted, and that offering a book on Kindle increases the total sales. He notes that when an author comes out with a new book, he or she will do publicity or get reviews. “When you’re on NPR and someone goes on their Kindle to look for the book, it’s your chance to make that sale,” he said. “They won’t remember in a month or two.”

As proof of the way that the Kindle has changed reader habits, Bezos brings up an amazing statistic. Earlier this year, he startled people by revealing that of books available on both Kindle and paper versions, 35 percent of copies sold by Amazon were Kindle versions. Now, he says, the number is up to 48 percent. This means that a lot of people have bought Kindles (Amazon won’t reveal the figures) and that Kindle owners buy a lot of books.

Bezos hasn’t missed the buzz about upcoming digital tablets. He says that Amazon is hard at work making software apps (like the one already available for the iPhone) that will extend the Kindle system to other devices. He’s also still open “in principle” to rival e-reader manufacturers who wish to use the Kindle store to provide content. But he feels that while people may read on phones and web-surfing tablets, the dedicated e-reading device will keep improving.

“We want Kindle to be the best way to read,” Bezos says. And now, people can read books that they download outside the US.

AT&T now allowing iPhone VoIP calls over 3G

AT&T’s restrictive network policies might have been behind some of the more notable iPhone app rejections in the past, but at least one major class of applications just got the green light, as Ma Bell just opened up iPhone VoIP calls over 3G. We can only assume this is the result of the FCC’s renewed push for net neutrality and AT&T’s argument that it’s doesn’t need new regulations to remain open, but — what does this mean for you? Well, Skype on the road, for starters, but we’re guessing a flood of interesting new VoIP apps will hit just as soon as devs can get their apps updated and submitted. We’ll see how pushing all this more data affects AT&T’s network going forward — we’re totally starting a SlingPlayer petition drive if things don’t totally blow up.

Apocalypse Nigh, AT&T Opens Network for VoIP Over 3G on iPhone

Holy keee-rist. The apocalypse approaches, because AT&T has opened their network up to VoIP applications running over the air on the iPhone. In other words, AT&T is now totally cool with using Skype over 3G.

AT&T supposedly just told Apple and the FCC this afternoon that their network is ready for VoIP over 3G for the iPhone, meaning it might take a bit to show up in apps, but the floodgates are open now. And yeah, whoa. Skype over 3G has been okay on other phones that weren’t the iPhone before this, but AT&T’s now “taken the steps necessary so that Apple can enable VoIP applications on iPhone to run on AT&T’s wireless network.” Since there’s no cap on iPhone data—and AT&T says it’s still unlimited with VoIP—that means you can get the cheapest possible voice plan and talk as much as you want through VoIP apps like Skype.

We wouldn’t be totally surprised if AT&T suddenly discovering their network is ready for VoIP over 3G is at least partially motivated by the FCC’s recent crowing about net neutrality—even for mobile providers—and in reaction to the FCC’s investigation as to what exactly when down between AT&T, Apple and Google with Google Voice. This is AT&T showing Mr. FCC that they play nice and fair, and pretty please, don’t drop some government regulation on their head, like mandated neutrality. It also makes them look better as they point the finger at Google Voice for not following net neutrality conventions.

A couple of points to add: This is specifically about VoIP (very likely because of the FCC’s Google Voice curiosities), so there’s nothing to fapfapfap about on the SlingPlayer or tethering front. While Skype is the most immediate woohoo context that comes to mind, we’re actually more interested now in the possibility of an app that is even more targeted to letting you get over on AT&T and replace your voice minutes with data for phone calls.

Whatever the cause or motivations, we’re just glad to see it happen, finally. Now we’ve just gotta wait for the apps to catch up.

AT&T EXTENDS VOIP TO 3G NETWORK FOR IPHONE

DALLAS, October 6, 2009 – AT&T* today announced it has taken the steps necessary so that Apple can enable VoIP applications on iPhone to run on AT&T’s wireless network. Previously, VoIP applications on iPhone were enabled for Wi-Fi connectivity. For some time, AT&T has offered a variety of other wireless devices that enable VoIP applications on 3G, 2G and Wi-Fi networks. AT&T this afternoon informed Apple Inc. and the FCC of its decision.

In late summer, AT&T said it was taking a fresh look at VoIP capabilities on iPhone for use on AT&T’s 3G network, consistent with its regular review of device features and capabilities to ensure attractive options for consumers.

“iPhone is an innovative device that dramatically changed the game in wireless when it was introduced just two years ago,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets. “Today’s decision was made after evaluating our customers’ expectations and use of the device compared to dozens of others we offer.”

AT&T allows customers to download or launch on their wireless devices a multitude of compatible applications directly from any lawful Internet website. Additionally, because AT&T uses GSM technology, the most pervasive and open wireless technology platform in the world, we support customers using any GSM phone that works on AT&T’s frequencies.

Verizon removes gloves, begins ‘There’s a map for that’ anti-AT&T ad campaign (video)

Ouch. If you’ve been waiting for another flare up in the old carrier wars, here you have it. Turning Apple’s “there’s an app for that” slogan on its ear, Verizon has introduced a campaign touting its network coverage. The ads — which highlight the company’s new tongue-in-cheek “there’s a map for that” catchphrase against tuneful, chirpy music — also boast that Verizon’s 3G blanket is a whopping five times the size of AT&T’s. Does this do anything to dispel the idea that Verizon and Apple may be getting together for that phantom tablet? Who knows, but it’s fun to watch the fireworks.
