Did the Samsung Galaxy S II with NFC just hit the FCC?

Hooray, another Samsung phone made it through the FCC, and it looks like it could be another Galaxy S II variant. No, it’s not the Tegra 2-clad version. Nor is it the one with WiMAX. Heck, it’s not even the GT-i9100 that showed up in March. Nay, it’s the Samsung i777, a new form of the phone sequel we’ve been pulling our hair out in anticipation for. What’s so great about this candidate? It’s rocking an NFC antenna on the battery cover and utilizes 850 / 1900 bands in the WCDMA / HSPA variety, making it a tasty target for users on AT&T, Bell, Rogers, or Telus. The phone’s dimensions are identical with Europe’s current model, which nearly seals the deal on its likely association with the Galaxy S II lineup. Annoyed that this beauty is cradled in some FCC tester’s hands and not yours? Fret not, August is quickly approaching.

Motorola Atrix sequel gets candid with the camera, heading for AT&T?

With all of the hype building for the Droid Bionic’s arrival, we can’t say we were expecting to see an unannounced Motorola device receive love from the camera instead. But sure ’nuff, we beheld our gadget-lusting eyes on a handset that’s likely AT&T-bound in the near future — the carrier’s logo is flaunted on the front, at least — and may even be the next-gen Atrix 4G. Sporting a coincidentally similar design to its supposed predecessor, we only know of a few specs so far: the mystery device offers an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video capture, HDMI connectivity, Moto’s new Blur UI replacement and a curved display similar to the Nexus S — though this time there’s no fingerprint scanner onboard. It looks and sounds great, but let’s just hope that this one really is the “world’s most powerful” smartphone. The gallery below shows the device in all its glory.

HTC Puccini tablet shots leak out with AT&T branding, may sport stylus functionality

Is this the fabled HTC Puccini tab we recently saw fly through the FCC’s embrace? Only time will tell for sure, but BGR has some leaked shots that show the purported tab cozying up to a Flyer-like stylus, in addition to its AT&T branding. A glimpse of this Honeycomb-based 10-incher’s backside also reveals an 8 megapixel rear-mounted camera accompanied by what looks like a dual-LED flash. There’s also that dual speaker set-up we peeped in the tablet’s prior filing. Of course, what lies beneath this LTE slate is still up for speculation, but a rumored dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 1280 x 800 display aren’t beyond the realm of today’s future specs. Hit the source for an extra shot.

AT&T confirms LG Thrill 4G pricing, release ‘in the coming weeks’

Pricing for the LG Thrill 4G popped up on Radio Shack’s corporate systems a few days ago, at $80 with a two-year contract. AT&T just shared its official Thrill pricing, however, with the glasses-free 3D smartphone commanding a healthy $99 at the company’s retails stores when it ships “in the coming weeks.” That timeframe meshes nicely with the August 7th launch date that a pair of Radio Shack insiders shared with us last week, though until we receive confirmation otherwise, it’s within reason to expect that devices will begin to ship before or even after that date. Either way, it doesn’t look like you’ll need to hold out much longer for your Thrill, with only a few more days of tranquility to go before the excitement begins.

AT&T confirms Gingerbread coming to entire 2011 Android lineup (and Samsung Captivate)

The HTC Status was the only device with Gingerbread on AT&T’s lineup for a small slice of time, but that’s quickly coming to an end. The carrier has confirmed that Android 2.3 will be pushed to its entire 2011 postpaid lineup, beginning with an OTA rollout of the Motorola Atrix 4G today (though and the HTC Inspire 4G “in the coming weeks.” In addition to the phones released this year, Samsung Captivate users will be able to enjoy the upgrade as well. There’s no hard details on the timing for everyone else, but at least anyone with a 2011 model can breath a sigh of relief. Full press release can be found after the break.

Atrix gets Gingerbread update, sideloading support, new outlook on life

ATrix

Its evil cousin the Bionic may be lurking just around the bend, with its too-long sideburns and its crazy eyes, but that doesn’t mean the Atrix 4G is ready to hang up its hat just yet. AT&T’s wunderphone with the woven back is just now receiving a 2.3.4 update, bringing it all the sensuous flavors of Gingerbread and finally, finally, the ability to sideload apps. First, though, you’ll need to download the 161MB update, which is waiting for you at the other end of the source link below. No, really, it is — but it’s getting impatient. Go on, go say hello.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

LG Thrill 4G up for pre-order today at Radio Shack, ahead of August 7th launch?

The LG Thrill 4G was announced at CTIA four months ago , but wasn’t given its rightful time in the sun due to a much larger elephant in the room. Now the phone’s launch is quickly approaching, however, and the AT&T-branded Optimus 3D is ready to get some glory. We were sent not one, but two separate emails this morning from Radio Shack insiders with a few details about the retail chain’s rollout of the device. As it turns out, visitors to The Shack can be offered the opportunity to reserve a Thrill — supposedly gearing up for an August 7th launch — starting today with the purchase of a $50 gift card. According to the screenshots sent to us, the Thrill can be all yours for $80 with a two-year contract ($550 if you exhibit a fear of commitment). We’re hesitant to declare August 7th the official launch date, since history has shown that resellers don’t always get handsets at the same time as corporate outlets do. If you find any success reserving one today, however, we’ll be thrilled elated to hear about it.

HTC Status review

For many smartphone users, a quality keyboard is the only feature that truly matters. These passionate devotees will proudly live and die with their thumbs blazing, and for of all RIM’s recent troubles, it’s currently floating on a life preserver: a compelling handset with a portrait QWERTY keyboard doesn’t exist for Android. The HTC Status ($50 on contract) attempts to succeed where others have failed, and — if it’s any good — could entice many BlackBerry-toting teens that want a new handheld fixation. They rarely bother with email, as text messages and Facebook reign supreme for communication. To that end, the Status promotes itself as the perfect phone for Facebook users, but is the integration truly useful, or simply a chintzy add-on? More so, can HTC successfully marry Gingerbread with an upright keyboard? Join us after the break to learn whether we “Like” the HTC Status.

AT&T ‘confident’ T-Mobile deal to close in Q1 2012

AT&T this morning offered up some earnings tidbits, and there’s some good news in there for the iPhone-wielding mobile network. In its best-ever second quarter for smartphone sales, the company moved more than 5.6 million of the devices. AT&T raked in consolidated revenues of $31.5 billion for the quarter, up $680 million over last year. The Former Mrs. Bell also revealed that it is “confident” that, much to the chagrin of Sprint and others, its planned purchase of T-Mobile is set to be completed by the first quarter of 2012. AT&T will be offering up more financial details in an earnings call later today, including, no doubt, the much-rumored plans for magenta carpeting in its global headquarters.

Update: The company didn’t talk too much about its interior decorating plans, but it did insist that it is “look[ing] forward to working with the FCC,” and while it still has “work to do, we remain confident that we can satisfy the FCC and DOJ.” AT&T also happily pointed out support from governors of 26 states. The acquisition, it added, will offer “enormous efficiencies” and “is the surest and fastest way to address the unique network constraints and spectrum shortages affecting AT&T.”
