AT&T offering a free month of Zune to folks who buy a Windows Phone 7 handset this year

We already knew AT&T was giving away ilomilo and a free month of U-verse Mobile to folks who buy one of its glorious Windows Phone 7 phones. What else? Well, AT&T is tossing in a free month of Zune Pass for good measure. Now, Microsoft already offers 14 day free trials to the Zune-curious, and there’s nothing stopping other carriers or Microsoft itself extending this deal to the rest of the world — we think the “first one’s free” method of addiction generation is particularly great for subscription music. Still, it’s nice to know AT&T has such an offer sewn up. Now that the Xbox is getting a native Zune UI at long last, how about a free month of Zune for Xbox Live subscribers as well? Microsoft can afford it.

[Thanks, Morgan G.]

TerreStar teetering on bankruptcy?

Okay, look, guys — we know putting a satellite into space is a pricey endeavor — just ask Sirius XM — but you literally just launched your first commercial device, the Genus, and we don’t think that “launch a device then immediately declare bankruptcy” is a particularly sound business model. They’re not there yet, but sure enough, the WSJ is claiming that newly-minted satphone operator TerreStar could be just days away from filing for Chapter 11 as it bears the brunt of around $1 billion in debt, possibly in the form of a well-structured and prearranged bankruptcy on the heels of discussions with the company’s creditors. Seeing how restructuring does seem like the most likely scenario here, we wouldn’t necessarily let this scare anyone off from buying a Genus — but at $799, we doubt many of you were planning on running out this week and picking it up anyway. Echoes of Iridium, anyone?

How would you change RIM’s BlackBerry Torch?

It’s the first BlackBerry to ship with BB OS 6, and it’s the first to boast both a touchpanel and a conventional slide-out QWERTY. But is it capable of standing up to the rest of today’s modern smartphones? We definitely had a few bones to pick with RIM’s latest flagship device when we reviewed it a few month’s back, but if you’re a regular, you’ll know that this segment isn’t about us — it’s about you, particularly if you own a Torch. Are you satisfied with the revised OS? Happy with the touchscreen response? Would you have bumped the screen resolution? Changed the keyboard in any way? Thrown a CDMA module in for Sprint / Verizon support? RIM’s betting quite a bit on this new operating system (and this new design), so feel free to sound off in comments below with ideas on how you’d change things for version two dot oh. Keep it classy, though — cool?

iPad going on sale in Verizon Wireless and AT&T stores October 28 (update: Verizon data pricing)

It might not be the Apple-Verizon tie-in you are most anxious to see happen, but the big red network has gone official with its plans to offer the iPad in its brick-and-mortar stores starting on October 28. VZW will be bundling the WiFi-only iPads with its own MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot with pricing set at $630, $730 and $830 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants of Apple’s tablet, respectively. There’s only one access plan on offer for now, granting users 1GB of monthly data allowance in exchange for $20 and no contractual commitments. AT&T will match the release date and upfront prices for each model, although its iPads will be of the WiFi + 3G variety, eschewing the need for a bundled MiFi; plan pricing will continue at 200MB for $15 or 2GB for $25 monthly. Full press releases follow after the break.

Update: According to an FAQ on Verizon’s website, spotted by AppleInsider, there are a pair of other service plans after all: $35 for 3GB and $50 for 5GB, each with penalties of $10 per gigabyte of overage. As the publication notes, these are pretty nifty deals compared to Verizon’s usual data rates, however the FAQ also stipulates that “customers will only be eligible for the new bundle data plans when purchasing the iPad and MiFi 2200 promotional bundle.”

Dell Streak, HTC Surround, white Samsung Fascinate, and Taylor Swift-ified white SE X10 coming to Best Buy exclusively

We’ve got a little more detail on those four new pre-orderable phones up in Best Buy Mobile’s business this week now that the news has gone from leak status to official, and needless to say, the truth is even stranger than fiction. The Dell Streak will be available for the first time in retail stores for $299.99 on contract come October 24, joined by a white version of Verizon’s Samsung Fascinate for $149.99 on contract; those two will be followed on November 8 by the HTC Surround for $199. Here’s where it gets interesting, though: the white Sony Ericsson X10 for AT&T — also rumored in our original leak — will come pre-loaded with “The Essential Taylor Swift Experience,” which frankly doesn’t paint a picture of the target demographic we’d really expected. But hey, we like surprises! What does her essential experience entail, exactly? Two albums, a new single, ringtone and video content, and access to her new album when it launches on October 25. This bad boy also comes in on October 24 for $99 on contract. Best Buy claims that all four of these are in-store exclusives… which, particularly with the Surround, is pretty insane. Follow the break for the press release.

T-Mobile to Throttle Data Speeds After 5 GB Use

There are fewer places to go to for consumers seeking access to unlimited data on their smartphones. T-Mobile plans to reduce data speeds for those consumers who use more than 5 GB of data in a single billing cycle, according to the Tmonews website.

The move will kick in this weekend and T-Mobile claims less than 1 percent of its customers will be affected.

T-Mobile’s decision is just a step short of the data caps announced by other wireless carriers. In September, Verizon said it plans to stop selling unlimited data plans to new customers and will, instead, introduce two service plans with monthly data caps. A few months earlier, AT&T decided to retire unlimited 3G-data plans. Sprint has said it will have to reconsider unlimited data for its 4G network if data usage increases significantly.

Consumers today are using their smartphones for more than just voice and e-mail. The rise of social networking sites and mobile video and apps has led to a tremendous increase in the amounts of data being sucked through wireless devices.

Average data consumption increased to 298 MB a month in the first quarter of this year, from about 90 MB a month for the same period last year. That’s a gain of approximately 230 percent in a year, according to research by Nielsen Mobile. And, so far, it hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down.

T-Mobile has said only “extreme data users” will feel the pain. The company plans to send text messages warning users about their data speeds if they reach the limit.

This is not the first time T-Mobile has tried to throttle data speeds for power users. Earlier, the company capped usage around 10 GB but it seems to be reducing the threshold now.

For consumers this makes for a difficult choice. They can either get limited data from AT&T and Verizon and pay heavily for exceeding that or get “unlimited” data at T-Mobile and see their data download to a trickle after a certain point. Either way, it’s clear–the days of unlimited data on mobile devices are over.

Xbox 360 Getting AT&T U-verse HDTV

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is a multimedia machine. The console lets you consumer all manner of media through your television set, like games, movies, music, and even, well, TV. Microsoft this week announced that the system will be getting AT&T U-Verse, bringing the Xbox HDTV and DVR capabilities.

In order to use the service, you’ll need a U-verse account and set-top box. There’s also a mandatory Xbox kit, which includes a 360 remote control–that’ll run you an extra $99. Oh, and an AT&T cable guy is going to have to come to your house to install the thing. The handy video above will explain everything to you.

U-verse is currently available in a number of markets across the US.

iPad Coming to Verizon Stores on October 28th [Ipad]

Apple’s AT&T monogamy has officially ended, at least as far as the iPad is concerned. Because at the end of this month, the tablet is coming to Verizon. Well, Wi-Fi anyway. More »

White Samsung Fascinate and Sony Ericsson X10 joining Dell Streak in Best Buy this month

Let’s be real: almost every phone looks better in white. Okay, so that’s strictly a matter of personal opinion — but if you’re a white phone kind of person, turn your attention away from the forever-delayed iPhone 4 and toward a couple that are launching shortly thanks to some new details from Best Buy. Turns out Verizon’s white Fascinate and AT&T’s white X10 are both scheduled to hit on October 24, alongside the Dell Streak — not in white, by the bye — followed by the HTC Surround on November 8 (which we already knew). Any of ’em can be yours for a $50 deposit.

Update: We’ve been told that the white Fascinate and X10 will be exclusives for Best Buy, at least at first.

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]
