U-verse Mobile 2.0 for iPhone available, combines downloadable TV shows with remote DVR access

Just as we’d heard it would, AT&T has officially launched version 2.0 of its iPhone app for U-Verse TV customers. Now dubbed U-Verse Mobile, it still allows users to manage and schedule DVR recordings on the go, but now has an updated UI, a favorite channels list, and most notably will allow users (with the U399 or U450 packages) to download a limited selection of shows directly to their phone. While that should make it easier to catch up with Lost, Grey’s Anatomy or whatever other shows AT&T makes available while on the subway or otherwise out of streaming reach you won’t be downloading your own DVR recordings, and you won’t downloading any of them over 3G since that’s WiFi only. While AT&T is loudly proclaiming it’s the first to allow downloads, by comparison Dish already lets users Sling whatever they want from its 922 — if they can get it to work right now. Check out the press release and a quick video demo after the break if you’re still not exactly sure how all this will go down, or just go straight to iTunes and grab the free app right now. Blackberry Torch fans should keep an eye out too, since a compatible version is on the way — no word yet on Android or webOS.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 Finally Comes to the U.S. via ATT

Sony Ericsson’s flagship Android device, the Xperia X10, will be launching on AT&T August 15, the companies announced Monday morning.

The device was first revealed in November 2009, and was something of a harbinger of things to come for Android devices.   It runs on a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, has a 4″ touchscreen, 8GB of onboard memory, an 8.1 megapixel LED flash camera, and an elegant Sony Ericsson Android skin known simply as the UX platform (based on Android 1.6.)  After the X10 was announced, handset makers  HTC, Motorola, and Samsung all revealed their own Android devices with similar specs, ushering in what became known as the first generation of “superphones.”

The Xperia X10 has been available in Europe since February 2010.

Now it will finally be available in the United States on August 15 for $150 with a two-year contract with AT&T.  It is the fourth Android handset available with AT&T, following the Motorola Backflip, HTC Aria, and Samsung Captivate.

Sony Ericsson Xperia 10 officially debuts on AT&T: $130 on contract

If ever there were a place for using the phrase “it’s about time,” this would be it. If you’ll recall, we heard rumors that Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 would be headed to AT&T as far back as November of last year, possibly proving just how grueling the certification process is for getting a handset onto Ma Bell’s network. Those whispers flared up again back in April, and our hunches about yesterday’s tease seem to be confirmed today. The Android-powered X10 (v1.6 so far as we can tell, but the PR carefully dodges the issue) will be available for consumers starting on August 15th, with the handset boasting a 4-inch touchpanel, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, inbuilt GPS, 8.1 megapixel camera (with LED flash), 8GB of onboard memory, a 2GB flash card and a couple of SE’s own apps atop the stock Android build (Mediascape and Timescape). AT&T’s claiming that this bad boy will set you back $149.99 on a 2-year service plan, but Sony’s saying that it can be picked up in a local Sony Style store for $20 less. Oh, and if you wait a week, it’ll be $49.99 on contract over at Amazon. Decisions, decisions.

Update: Yep, it’s Android 1.6. Commence weeping.

AT&T’s bullish earnings report suggests iPhone exclusivity is almost over

You can tell a product ranks high in the public consciousness when something like this is news: AT&T’s quarterly earnings report makes it sound like the telecom may finally lose its iPhone exclusivity deal. While a class-action lawsuit recently confirmed the handset was originally locked to AT&T / Cingular for a full five years, the company’s Q2 SEC filing has the company making a considerable number of familiar excuses why AT&T’s cellular business will thrive even “as these exclusivity arrangements end.” While the iPhone isn’t mentioned by name, it’s hard to imagine sentences like “We believe offering a wide variety of handsets reduces dependence on any single handset” could refer to anything else — but before you start defecting to Team Red, know there’s nothing in there that suggests a date, much less proof of the fabled CDMA iPhone.

Samsung’s Cetus SGH-i917 sashays into FCC database, winks seductively at AT&T

AT&T came right out and confessed that it would be “the premiere carrier” for Windows Phone 7, and while it’s obviously far too early to say if that’ll be the case, this ain’t a bad way to start proving one’s point. Samsung’s Cetus (SGH-i917) was just recently confirmed to be one of the first commercial Windows Phone 7 devices last week, and now the always-disclosing FCC database has shed even more light on the phone’s intentions. Based on the mention of 850 / 1,900MHz frequency support — and that whole “SGH-i917 (ATT)” marking on the label — it’s pretty safe to assume that this 4-inch, AMOLED-packin’ superphone will soon be fighting with the iPhone 4 for shelf space. There’s obviously no indication of when Ma Bell plans on releasing this one to the wilds, but it’s typically not too far out after hitting this milestone. Giddy yet?

BlackBerry Torch Review [Review]

If you don’t already own a BlackBerry, you will not want this phone. And if you do, you still might not want it, even if it may very well be the “best BlackBerry ever.” More »

HTC Paradise and Fiesta flipped on Craiglist, AT&T-bound?

Look familiar? We know, it’s tough to keep this endless barrage of Android gear straight, so let us refresh your memory: this phone, allegedly the HTC Paradise, matches up perfectly with a model PC70110 that we spied in the FCC all the way back in April on its way to AT&T. Sure enough, some lucky dude apparently scooped it up as an “AT&T sample” from an eager seller on Craigslist recently — and considering that the only QWERTY Android device that the carrier’s got right now is the Backflip, we’d be delighted to see it come along any day now. That’s not the only unreleased piece of hardware he managed to score, though: turns out he also got the Fiesta, a phone we haven’t heard about in a full year and could very well have fallen on the scrap heap by now. The picture provided of the Fiesta isn’t that great (check the Source link to see it), but from what we see and the fact that it’s got a 3.2 megapixel camera, our guess is that it’s been supplanted at retail by the Aria. At any rate, good to see AT&T seems to be keeping the heat on Android.

BlackBerry Torch Impressions: The BlackBerry, Weirdly Evolved [Blackberry Torch 9800]

BlackBerry Torch. The name of the phone that RIM hopes will revitalize BlackBerry is so metaphorically heavy handed that it almost inflicts blunt-force trauma. The iconic BlackBerry metastasized into a slider with sparkly new software, it’s wonderfully weird. More »

BlackBerry Torch is official, launching August 12th on AT&T for $200

It hasn’t been announced just yet — we’re expecting that shortly at a New York event today — but the long-rumored BlackBerry Torch (née 9800) just went live on AT&T’s site offering the opportunity to sign up for a notification when you can buy the thing. Major features include a 5 megapixel cam with flash, full QWERTY on a portrait slide, 802.11n support, and — of course — BlackBerry 6 with an all-new browsing experience and a host of other features that should help position RIM within earshot of its less-stodgy rivals. You’ve also got 4GB of storage onboard paired with a 4GB microSD card in the box, 512MB each of ROM and RAM, a quadband 3G radio that’ll travel well around the globe, a 480 x 360 touchscreen display (same resolution as the Bold 9700) measuring 3.2 inches, the typical optical trackpad down below, and an interesting new Media Sync feature that’ll let you sync your media library right over WiFi — something various third parties have tried over the years, but has rarely been offered as an out-of-the-box capability. Interested? It’ll hit AT&T and third-party retail locations and websites on the 12th of the month for $199.99 on contract. Follow the break for RIM’s introductory videos and the press release.

BlackBerry 9800 slider for AT&T slips through FCC: ready for 11AM announcement

Can’t say we didn’t see this one coming but it looks like RIM’s BlackBerry 9800 slider was just blessed by the FCC on AT&T frequencies. While the FCC documents refer to it as a “BlackBerry smartphone model RCY71UW,” there’s no mistaking the backside wireframe that forms a perfect match when superimposed onto our earlier exclusive pics. Besides, there’s also liberal mention of several associated “MultiSourceDeclaration_9800_” documents throughout the FCC’s test results. So what have we got then? Well, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n, GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900, UMTS II (1900), V (850) are all go with the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800 MHz bands and UMTS I (2100) bands listed for international use. And yeah, it’s been tested with the slider open and closed. Come back for the live reveal when the RIM / AT&T event kicks off at 11:00AM eastern.
