Samsung Memoir officially brings 8 megapixels to T-Mobile

At some point, T-Mobile decided it wanted to play in the megapixel big leagues by rolling out the Motorola ZN5 and Samsung Behold, but why stop at a measly little 5 megapixels? The long-rumored t929 Memoir from Samsung has now been officially announced for T-Mobile USA’s funky 3G bands, featuring a full touchscreen, TouchWiz user interface, integrated AGPS, full HTML browser, and — of course — that glorious 8 megapixel sensor with xenon flash. No word on pricing or availability just yet, but we’re told we can expect it some time this month.

It’s official: DTV “hard date” moved to June 12

After much wrangling, the DTV Delay Act has worked its way through the House of Representatives and will certainly be signed by President Obama, changing the cutoff date for analog broadcasts from February 17 to June 12. Don’t expect this to bring a sudden end to digital TV confusion, since stations can switch prior to that date, and according to the FCC up to 61% will be able to. Since simply powering analog equipment costs thousands of dollars a month, OTA TV watchers will want to check their local broadcaster’s plans as more than a few will be going ahead with the original date for better or worse. Got an unused, expired coupon? No need to head to Retrevo just yet, since you’ll now be able to reapply to the again-funded coupon program. Of course, the FCC still has to figure out how to implement the new law, with only a few days to prepare, tomorrow’s open meeting on the subject should be very interesting.

Garmin, ASUS form partnership for phones, nuvifone G60 first model

We knew the nuvifone was an ASUS-sourced piece, but who knew the partnership was going to run so deep? Garmin and ASUS have joined hands to create the Garmin-Asus strategic alliance with the goal of designing and producing a whole line of co-branded handsets. The first model will be what we’ve come to know so well over the past year simply as “the nuvifone,” but it’ll be branded as the nuvifone G60 by the time it actually comes to market in the first half of the year. Several Garmin-Asus phones are expected in 2009, and it sounds like the second model in the series will be announced at MWC later this month. Now, wouldn’t it just be great if we had a G60 here that we could use to navigate to Barcelona?

Update: Engadget Chinese just returned from the press conference in Taiwan with several updates. First, the OS on these phones has not been finalized. According to ASUS’ chairman, “We have expertise in WinMo, Linux and Android, but we believe the software is more important then the OS.” The partnership, which puts Garmin in charge of the “Navigation centric” UI also brings an end to ASUS-only branded cellphones.

Windows 7 SKUs announced: your worst nightmare has come to pass

Remember that screenshot we saw of all those different Windows 7 versions (pictured above)? Well guess what? It’s worse than you could have possibly imagined. The following will be the actual new SKUs for the OS:

  • Windows 7 Starter (limited to three apps concurrently)
  • Windows 7 Home Basic (for emerging markets)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium (adds Aero, Touch, Media Center)
  • Windows 7 Professional (Remote Desktop host, Mobility Center, Presentation mode)
  • Windows 7 Enterprise (volume license only, boot from virtual drive, BitLocker)
  • Windows 7 Ultimate (limited availability, includes everything)

This information has been confirmed by Microsoft… who never listens to us. At least most consumers will only see Home Premium and Professional options at retail, which is more akin to the XP options of yore, and means WMC will be “baseline” for most PCs.

Update: Just to be clear, we’ve checked specifically with Microsoft on all six versions, and the placement of Home Basic in emerging markets. There’s now a full breakdown after the break.

Motorola posts $3.6b loss as devices sales fall by 26 percent

Things just aren’t getting any better for Motorola — just weeks after the troubled phone manufacturer announced deep layoffs, it’s revealing that it lost $3.6 billion dollars in the fourth quarter. The loss is mainly attributed to falling device sales: handsets were down 26 percent, and mobile devices total were down 51 percent. According to Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, the answer for now is Android phones, which the company thinks will be more competitive than WinMo devices in 2009 — and he interestingly said that Moto plans on continuing to make Windows Mobile devices because it thinks WinMo 7 will be a big deal when it comes out in 2010. That’s the first time we’ve ever heard a date on WinMo 7, if you’re keeping track — and if it’s right, it’ll be the second time Jha’s blown the lid on an upcoming version of Windows Mobile. Whoops! We’ll be watching that one, but for now here’s hoping Moto rights the ship with something like an Android-based SURF A3100 — otherwise it may not even be around in 2010.

Toshiba TG01 with 4.1-inch WVGA touchscreen: a world’s first Snapdragon

Finally, an honest to goodness Qualcomm Snapdragon device is about to land in the form of the Toshiba TG01. The 9.9-mm thin handset will feature a 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) touchscreen display, HSDPA data, GPS, WiFi, a microSD slot, and custom Tosh 3D GUI to hide the Windows Mobile 6.1 uglies within. Most notable is that 1GHz Snapdragon chip that Toshiba claims makes the TG01 considerably faster than any device currently on the market with the promise to “revolutionize the mobile entertainment world.” Perhaps that’s where the DivX support comes in? We’ll see when the TG01 is unveiled at Mobile World Congress in less than two weeks followed by an expected summery launch. One more picture after the break.

Update: Oh man, the hands-on photo galleries from the London launch are coming up over at Pocket-Lint and Electricpig, the latter with head-to-head pics of the TG01 against the 12.3-mm iPhone 3G chubster and BlackBerry Bold. She’s definitely a slim-lined beauty but we have our doubts about that stripey UI. Hey Tosh, where’s the Android OS we saw running on Snapdragon at CES?

Nikon unveils eight new Coolpix cams

Nikon just dropped the refresh bomb on its Coolpix line, adding eight new point-and-shoots like the P90 here to the family. Here’s the rundown:

  • Coolpix S230 and S220: 10 megapixels with a touchscreen that lets you write and draw on your photos. Both have four-way VR image stabilization, blink detection, and are available in several colors; the $229 S230 bumps the screen to three inches from the $149 S220’s two and a half and adds ISO 2000 sensitivity.
  • Coolpix S630: 12 megapixels with a 7x optical zoom and an 11fps burst mode, a 2.7-inch LCD, four-way VR image stabilization, blink detection and ISO 6400 sensitivity. Available in five colors for $279.
  • S620: 12.2 megapixels with a 4x zoom, 0.7-second startup time, subject tracking, four-way VR image stabilization, blink / motion detection and ISO 6400 sensitivity. Also available in five colors for $269.
  • Coolpix P90: 12.1 megapixel zoomer with a 24x 26-624mm zoom and 15fps burst mode, 3-inch tilt screen, four-way VR image stabilization, blink / motion detection, distortion control and ISO 6400 sensitivity. $339 in March.
  • Coolpix L100: 10 megapixel with a 15x 28-420mm zoom and a 13fps burst mode, 3-inch screen and four-way VR image stabilization. Only comes in Bright Red for $279 in March.
  • Coolpix L20: 10 megapixels with a 3.6x zoom and a 3-inch display, motion detection and auto scene selection. AA-powered, will come in Deep Red for $129.
  • Coolpix L19: 8 megapixels with a 3.6 zoom and a 2.7-inch display, motion detection and auto scene selection. AA-powered, will come in Bright Silver for $109.

Not bad at all, but you’ve got to wonder why all these companies insist on cranking out so many minior variations on the same theme — the average consumer has no chance of keeping up. Pictures of all the new shooters in the gallery.

Crackulous released, promises to bust iPhone app protection scheme

If Apple’s sat back and let the iPhone hacking community do its thing in peace (well, relative peace) so far, this little gem just might be what the doctor ordered to stir up the crap. Crackulous — available now in beta form through Cydia — claims to be able to strip the protection off most apps downloaded from the App Store, meaning that just a single user needs to take the plunge and buy a target app once to get it busted and into free circulation. You need a jailbroken iPhone to get Crackulous loaded, naturally — you’ll see Apple make a Windows Mobile-powered device before you’ll see Crackulous in the App Store — but seeing how PwnageTool is dead simple to use, this puts most users just a couple graphical tools away from foolproof piracy and the golden opportunity to take a few hard-earned bucks out of a programmer’s pocket.

Obama BlackBerry alert: it’s a BlackBerry

Guess what? Obama isn’t using the Super Phone 6000. He’s using the BlackBerry 8830, by Research In Motion (the photo above was taken today). So much for your shot at the big leagues, Sectera Edge. Maybe next time.

Virgin Mobile Helio Ocean 2 unboxed, scheduled for launch with Britney Spears

It looks like the world had better (finally) get ready for Virgin Mobile’s Helio Ocean 2 — not only have unboxing shots of the long-awaited set surfaced today, a Virgin press release hyping the company’s sponsorship of Britney Spears’ Circus tour casually mentions that it’ll be launched alongside Brit’s big comeback. “Select fans” will be given Ocean 2s to capture and share images and videos from each show using the phone’s blogging, email, and social networking features, so we’re guessing that means we’ll be seeing a launch before the tour kicks off in March — and with units out in the wild already, it could be as soon as a couple weeks on February 12. Check all the unboxing shots at the read link — it looks pretty slick, even if it is way late to the game.
