PS3 price cuts appear in print, must be real (update: ‘new exciting Playstation 3’)

As the story goes, a Kotaku reader just received these PS3 posters (now posted after the break) into the FYE shop where he works. You’ll notice that the “new low price” is augmented with a “while supplies last” disclaimer indicating what could be a close-out on the 80GB (soon $300, reduced from $400) and 160GB ($400, reduced from $500) PlayStation 3 models. More evidence, perhaps, that a PS3 Slim announcement is imminent — even as soon as today’s Sony presser at the Cologne Gamescon Expo that kicks off at 12 noon ET or 1800 for those of you on Central Europe time.

Update: Kmart is now in on the action with a front-page ad (pictured above) that says the “rumors are reality” and then promises linked details about “new low price and a new exciting Playstation 3.” Unfortunately, the link isn’t populated with the new prices or the new model yet but we’ll keep digging.

[Thanks, Jeremy23j and Daniel]

Dell officially developing ‘mobile devices’ for China Mobile

If you’re going to go, you might as well go big, right? In a confirmation for the ages, Dell spokesperson Andrew Bowins has clearly stated that the company is “developing mobile devices for China Mobile,” giving the Round Rock powerhouse access to the biggest mobile subscriber base on the entire planet. Unfortunately, he didn’t confirm nor deny whether the Mini 3i that we peeked this morning would be amongst the first to launch, but obviously you won’t find us gasping should it happen. Beyond that, details on the whole arrangement are scant, but here’s hoping that Dell trucks those handsets over to this side of the drink in short order.

Dell Mini 3i smartphone gets official outing in China

At last, the much rumored Dell cellphone has made its first official appearance. The 3.5-inch 360 x 640 pixel device with capacitive touchscreen was on display in China running the Android-based Open Mobile System (OMS). The Mini 3i was on-hand as part of the launch of China Mobile’s new Application Platform that offers music, video, and app downloads to mobile phones from Nokia, Samsung, LG, and apparently, Dell. The candybar device lacks WiFi (or Chinese WAPI) and is strictly 2G GSM (no 3G) but does come with a 3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, Bluetooth, and 950mAh battery. Guess now we know why the early prototypes were met with a collective meh by mobile carriers earlier this year. No idea when this will ship but it looks China-bound for at least the near future. A few more pics after the break.

Sony Ericsson selects next president, appoints Howard Stringer chairman of the board

It’s out with the old, in with the new over at Sony Ericsson as it tries to revamp both its image and its lineup in the face of stiff competition, weak financials, and an unfocused platform strategy. President Hideki Komiyama (pictured left) intends to retire at the end of the year, and stepping up to fill his shoes will be the current head of Ericsson Silicon Valley, Bert Nordberg (right). To get the dude up to speed, he’ll become co-president as of September 1 and take over sole control of the operation on October 15. Speaking of October 15, that’s also the date that Sir Howard Stringer — yes, the one and only chairman and CEO of Sony — will take over the chairmanship of Sony Ericsson’s executive board from outgoing Ericsson CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg. Whether this signals a power shift in the joint venture from Ericsson to Sony is unclear, but they’ve specifically mentioned in a press conference today to announce the moves that they need to “address [their] smartphone weakness” — and yes, we’d agree. Do exactly that, Bert Nordberg.

Verizon tests first data connections on LTE network in Seattle and Boston

Big Red’s flexing its 4G muscle today, announcing that it has successfully completed the first true tests on its nascent LTE network — end-to-end data calls that presumably approximate real-world usage. The action actually happened way back on July 15 in Seattle, while Boston just went down today — the two markets where Verizon said it’d be running the first trials — both on 700MHz spectrum won not terribly long ago. LG and Samsung provided the mysterious, unspecified “trial devices,” but don’t worry, Motorola fans — Verizon says they’ve got devices in the pipeline as well. Both Seattle and Boston currently have ten LTE cell sites live as the carrier trudges toward a 2010 date with destiny when it’ll take “up to 30” markets live, at which point EV-DO and HSPA will theoretically feel like trying to send packets via carrier pigeon. Progress!

Update: We just spoke with Verizon Wireless CTO Tony Melone to expand a bit on the trials. Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • Though they’re not talking speeds with these trials specifically, they’re confident in saying that everything’s in line for 7-12Mbps down and 3-5Mbps up at launch.
  • The trials are being conducted on commercial LTE base station hardware, but everything else is prototype (and changing very rapidly). The end-user equipment doesn’t currently resemble anything you’d actually buy.
  • Data modems will be the priority at launch, which makes sense considering the amount of industry flux with regard to voice over LTE. Though Verizon believes the solution will ultimately be some form of VoIP, there are several outstanding issues, including handling of 911 calls.
  • Everything in the trial so far leads Verizon to believe that they’re on track for a 30-market launch in 2010.
  • This doesn’t spell the end of EV-DO deployments — far from it. Melone says that upgrades could continue all the way through to the initial LTE launch and beyond.

Sony Ericsson Satio arrives at the FCC

Well well, it looks like the mythical Sony Ericsson Satio is soon to go from beautiful fever-dream to actual reality — it’s popped into the FCC database with test results on GSM 850 and 1900, otherwise known as EDGE. Yeah, that sort of sucks, but we’re still holding out hope, since we don’t know the full story — it could be destined for a lame existence on AT&T, it could be sold unlocked, or it could be a Canadian or Latin American model. Seriously, though — it’s the Satio, and the government has one. You know what that means.

Zune HD lands September 15th, up for pre-order today

Do you want a Zune HD real bad? Well you’re in luck, because the wait is nearly over. Microsoft announced today that the heavily hyped media player will be making its way into retail channels come September 15th, and will be up for pre-order at select spots (Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, and the Microsoft Store) today. That’s right… today. The Tegra-packing, HD Radio-playing, 720p-outputting device will come in a black, 16GB flavor for $219.99, or a beefier, “platinum” finish 32GB version clocking in at $289.99 (apparently the player will come in five additional colors, but no word on which ones, exactly). If you’re super impatient and in select markets (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Minneapolis / St. Paul, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.) you can head into a Best Buy on August 22nd and 23rd to play with a device and drop $25 on a pre-order. Otherwise, you’ll just have to sit tight till the ZHD makes its way into the wide world… which is actually pretty soon. Check out more info about the player at our Zune HD hub, and after the break you can enjoy a recent video we shot of the device in action and the official PR.

Dell’s slim new Inspiron Z family is totally carb free

Dell’s got a new lineup heading your way this fall, this time taking its low-cost Inspiron laptop brand to thin land. The Inspiron Z “family” isn’t anything stunningly slim, and the 11.6-inch, disc drive free Z in the low end looks positively netbook-ish, but all the laptops are CULV-powered and should probably be arriving at pretty trim price points to fend off the likes of Acer’s Timeline series. Hopefully we’ll have more details soon (Dell sure does love to tease when it comes to CULV), but for now there are some ultra-exciting laptop stacking pics below to keep you entertained.

Dell’s Zino HD crams desktop parts into miniature enclosure

Confirmed specs are scarce, but we’re taking the term “desktop parts” — about the only info Dell will spill so far — to heart. Hopefully this new Zino HD mini PC from Dell can live up to its name and kick the sometimes sluggish, laptop-inspired Studio Hybrid to the curb as Dell’s home theater PC of choice. There’s HDMI, eSATA and USB galore, so that’s certainly a good start. Should ship sometime this fall.

Nokia and Microsoft to announce an “alliance” tomorrow — what? Update: Office on Nokia phones

We’re not sure what to make of this, but we were just invited to a joint Microsoft / Nokia teleconference during which the two companies will announce an “alliance.” Yeah, there are some pretty wild possibilities there — Nokia going WinMo? Redmond going Symbian? The creation of MaeWinMo? — but considering the featured speakers are Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft’s business division, and Kai Öistämö, Nokia’s EVP for devices, we’re guessing the real announcement will be something more pedestrian, like native Exchange support on Symbian or possibly that upcoming Atom netbook running Windows 7. Otherwise, hell — Nokia would be supporting three different mobile OSs, and that seems just a little too crazy, even for Espoo. We’ll see — it all goes down tomorrow at 11AM Eastern.

Update: This is probably unrelated, but Microsoft’s Mac BU just called its own presser for Thursday, so if you’re looking to spend the night weaving wild nonsensical conspiracy theories, we’d say all the pieces are in place.

Update 2: Told you it was nothing too out there — the Wall Street Journal says Microsoft will announce it’s working on a version of Office for Nokia phones. Anyone surprised? Didn’t think so.
