Hasta La Gadget!

Spring’s nearly here, and with it the promise of outdoors–biking, skateboarding, motorcycling, rollerdisco, or whatever your sport of choice. Consumers have turned in droves to portable, easy-to-use video cameras like the Flip, and they’ll no doubt like the forthcoming Kodak ZX1 and the Cobra DVC950. But if you like sports, you’re gonna love the VholdR.

Designed to by Twenty20 for hands-free recording of your favorite activity, the VholdR ($280 street) is a tiny black camcorder that mounts to your helmet, recording whatever you point your eyeballs at. A pair of laser beams help you target the camera correctly (they’re ideal for Predator impersonations, too), and one-button operation makes it easy to use with gloves on. Plus Twenty20 hosts a web community where you can post the day’s best clips and share tips with other users, all linked through Google Earth.

To test the VHoldR’s quality and ease of use, I set my friend Jesse up with the VHoldR for a week of intense motorcycling. After the jump, a full review, including a side-by-side comparison of video from the Pure Digital Flip.

Believe us people, popularity pays off. Just ask Pure Digital CEO Jonathan Kaplan, who is reportedly scrambling for ways to spend $80 million of the $500 million Cisco Systems is about to hand over in order to acquire the company. Granted, none of this has been confirmed just yet, but TechCrunch has it that the deal is all but done. Reportedly, Cisco’s interested in bringing the firm into its portfolio in order to further push high-bandwidth using services. Obviously, user generated HD video fits pretty perfectly into that agenda. We suspect we’ll be hearing more on the subject as the work week begins in earnest, but it sure sounds like Linksys is about to get a new cousin.

JVC’s new “Everio X” GZ-X900 camcorder is just what we like in a flagship device: incredible style, crazy specs, and awesome slow motion video of us slapping people. The GZ-X900 reworks the Everio line into a new brick-like form factor that’s bordering on the shape of camcorders of yore, but JVC puts a nice twist to it, and the camera is obviously very compact. JVC used some “premium materials” in the construction and it really shows, but what’s more exciting is the high-end 1080p resolution, with 1000 “TV lines” to sample from (it’s not upscaling from a completely bum source like many compact camcorders). The unit also works as a fast-action still camera, for 9 megapixel shots at 15 fps, and 5.3 megapixel shots at 60 fps. What we’re really wild about is the 600 fps slow motion, which operates at a 640 x 72 resolution — you can get more pixels at slower frame rates. Unfortunately, none of this good stuff comes cheap: the camera hits retail in June for an even $1000.

This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget didn’t want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back — so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. Sanyo’s Xacti line of pocket-friendly HD camcorders have been almost universally praised… when shooting outdoors. When trying to log clips in dim light, however, the story has been quite different. The outfit’s VPC-HD2000, which was unveiled at CES this year, came out looking decently strong from PhotographyBLOG‘s review. The handheld packed in “more features than you’d expect,” but the lofty price tag kept it from being a real contender. Sadly, the poor low light performance was grandfathered in, though the broad range of selectable ISO options were appreciated nonetheless. All in all, reviewers seemed to hold back on giving their wholehearted recommendation due to its price and the so-so image quality; in other words, you should probably avoid this one until its successor comes out, after which the MSRP may better reflect the benefits.
