Trapster 3.0 helps you avoid speed traps, encourages safety first

Speed limits, highway patrol, other drivers, it can all be such a bummer — especially, if you’re sitting back in one of these. With a little crowdsourced aid, however, and a free Android app, you can still fulfill that need for excessive speed. Recently released on the Android market, Trapster’s v3.0 update refreshes the look of its checkpoint alerting mobile app and throws in some new features for good measure. In addition to the cleaner UI, there’s also a new homescreen widget that lets you vote on upcoming traps and terrain maps to complement the existing standard and satellite versions. But the real standout feature here is the inclusion of a real-time speedometer that should have the heavy-footed reaching for that brake more often. The new function alerts drivers with color-coded warnings should their speed demon ways get the best of the road’s limit. Alright, so the app may discourage your burnt rubber predilections, but that shouldn’t stop you from hitting the source link to download this ticket-avoiding application.

Nissan expands Leaf’s US availability, makes seat warmers standard

Hey Leaf owners — that’s right, all 4,000 of you — it looks like Nissan took your complaints feedback to heart and is making a few standard additions its EV auto line. Prospective owners of the yet-to-be delivered 2012 models can look forward to the inclusion of a DC fast charge port that’ll have your roadster 80 percent juiced in under 30 minutes and some cold weather features — like heated seats and a battery warmer. The Japanese carmaker also announced plans to expand availability of the auto to Illinois and parts of the southeastern US, and will open reservations to the general public once existing orders are fulfilled. So that’s the good, now are you ready for the bad? These electric hatchbacks are getting a new, higher MSRP that takes the SV trim level model to $35,200 and the SL to $37,250. It’s an entirely reasonable price to pay for warm buns and, hey, you’re saving the planet.

Google Maps brings live traffic coverage to 13 European countries, makes work weeks even shorter

The next time you head out for a leisurely Sunday drive along the autobahn, you might wanna take a minute to consult Google Maps’ live traffic feature, now available in Germany and 12 other nations across Europe. Announced earlier this week, the new addition offers regularly updated coverage of all highways and major thoroughfares in countries like Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland, while bringing more detailed street-level data to users in the UK. Europe’s road warriors will also be able to use a legend to learn about traffic patterns at specific times or days of the week, making it even easier for you to micro-manage your summer getaway to the Swiss Alps. Learning how to fit all your luggage into the back of a Twingo, however, is another matter altogether.

Curtis Boirum’s robotic car makes omnidirectional dreams come true (video)

Let’s face it: you’ve probably never met a hemispherical omnidirectional gimbaled wheel that you didn’t like. Neither has Curtis Boirum, a grad student at Bradley University. The aforesaid whiz kid has put together one of the most visually stunning robots we’ve seen in some time, and while the frame itself is nothing to get hot and bothered about, the motion capabilities most definitely are. The secret lies in the black rubber hemisphere, which rotates like a top and is outfitted with servos that are able to tilt the entire mechanism left / right / forwards / backwards. What’s wild is just how fast those changes happen — something tells us that whole “on a dime” thing was born to be used right here. Head on past the break for video proof.

Pioneer’s AVIC-ZHO9-MEV, the first satnav for hypermilers

Are you the switched-on environmental type who plans your Prius journey around how much air resistance you’re likely to encounter on the way to Whole Foods? Rejoice! Now you can stop worrying and learn to love your car stereo if you purchase Pioneer‘s newest Navigation Unit designed specifically for electric vehicles, the AVIC-ZHO9-MEV. Hiding behind that easy to remember (and decidedly catchy) name is a device that estimates your car’s remaining battery, power consumption and opportunities for energy regeneration, planning your routes accordingly. Expect to be detouring down lots of short hills with slow moving traffic at the bottom, or maybe it’ll just give up on the whole idea of roads and demanding you switch to train tracks. It also has the usual things you’d expect from such a unit, so you can play DVDs on the 7-inch display, receive digital TV and radio and play MP3, WMA and AAC discs. The unit drops in Japan in ‘late July’ with an RRP of 246,750¥ — around $3,038.11.

Leaf sales outpacing the Volt, winning the fight for American garage space

Leaf Vs. Volt

According to Automobile, Nissan is winning the race to put the most electric cars in American driveways, selling 3,875 Leafs in the first six months of 2011, while Chevy only managed to put 2,754 Volt keys in the hands of consumers. This is despite Nissan suffering a month long manufacturing setback following the tsunami that struck in March. Chevy has had its own delays, having closed the Volt plant five weeks ago for upgrades that will allow it to pump out more vehicles. Lets not forget though, the Leaf starts at about $8,000 less than its American made competitor and, when it comes to weaning us off gas and putting us behind the wheel of tech-packed cars — there’s no shame in being number two. Perhaps GM will have better luck with that cheaper, shorter range version it’s been contemplating.

Terrafugia Transition aircraft gets DOT roadworthiness sign-off, can now drive you to the airport

For most experimental aircraft, earning an airworthiness certificate is enough of a challenge. But the Terrafugia Transition is a unique type of flying machine, requiring approval not only from the FAA, but also from the USDOT’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), since this air / land hybrid is likely to spend just as much time cruising down the highway as it will flying 5,000 feet above. The Transition is now slightly closer to takeoff, with the NHTSA granting exemptions for absent airbags, a missing electronic stability system, and the plane’s lightweight polycarbonate windows (polycarbonate is lighter than automotive safety glass, and won’t shatter and obscure a pilot’s vision in the event of a bird strike). Unfortunately the Transition still has other hurdles to fly over — its cabin is limited to carrying 330 pounds when fully fueled, including passengers, and the price has jumped 41 percent, to $250,000. In the meantime, Terrafugia hopes to move forward with production later this year, bringing the ‘flying car’ slightly closer to a runway (and highway) near you.

California carpool exemptions expire, quashing yellow-sticker envy

California carpool exemptions expire, quashing yellow-sticker envyIt looks like it’s time to kiss that sweet HOV goodbye for lone California hybrid drivers. No, there hasn’t been a spike in Clean Air Vehicle sticker thievery — this time it’s official. According to the California DMV, those little yellow stickers that once gave hybrid owners the right to ride solo in carpool lanes have expired, leaving some 85,000 drivers to fall in line with the rest of the state’s commuters. You’ll forgive us if we don’t shed a tear over this announcement.

Toyota Scion iQ EV plugs-in for official 2012 launch

The Scion iQ, Toyota’s tiny EV car that could, got an official 2012 launch yesterday at the automaker’s annual dealer meeting in Vegas. The quiet, though far from specific launch announcement frees this 65 mile-per-charge roadster from its pre-production limbo. Shown off last March at the Geneva Motor Show, the Scion iQ had been put on indefinite hold while factory production in the carmaker’s disaster-stricken homeland ramped back up to speed. With all signs now set to go, the only red-light still lingering is the micro-subcompact’s undisclosed MSRP. Considering the recent bankruptcy of Norwegian Think’s EV offering, we’re glad to see Toyota looking out for its little guy.

GMC showroom app tells you where to pick up your dream SUV, doesn’t help with down payment

Ever felt the need to customize vehicles and search dealer inventory, right from the comfort of your smartphone? Us neither, but here’s the General with another app to whet our appetites. While certainly not the first of its kind, the GMC showroom app for iOS (coming soon to Android), allows you to specify drive-type, trim, and both exterior / interior colors. Once content with your selections, you’re shown nearby dealers carrying exact replicas of your magnificent taste. Unfortunately for us, the app makes no mention of the closest EN-V. If SUVs are your thing, however, have a peep at the free app at the source link below.
