Survey finds a quarter of adults in the US and UK are ‘avid’ mobile gamers

Just how many cellphone users can be considered gamers these days? According to a new survey from PopCap Games and Information Solutions Group, about a quarter of adults in the US and UK have played a game on their phone in the past week, which makes them an “avid” gamer in their eyes, while about a third have played a game in the past month. If you dial things down to just mobile gamers with a smartphone, however, the number of avid gamers jumps to a hefty 83 percent, with 45 percent saying they play on a daily basis. What’s perhaps most telling, though, is that 55 percent of smartphone users say they play games in general most often on their on their phone, compared to just 22 percent who play most often on their desktop or laptop computer, and 20 percent who opt for game console. Dell Venue Pro arrives in the UK at long last: £459 off contract, shipping in 10 days (update: Germany also)

Time for a quick memory check: remember the WP7 slider that Dell announced some months ago? That’s right, it’s the Venue Pro — the one that’s been struggling to meet demand in the US due to some mysterious reworking. Well, here’s some good news for the folks on the other side of the pond: starting today, Dell’s UK store is taking orders for this unlocked slider for a hefty £459 ($745), and the first deliveries are expected to arrive in 10 days. Man, these wicked people from Round Rock sure love making us wait, but better late than never, right?

Update: We’ve been informed by our friends over at BestBoyZ that Germany’s also getting the Venue Pro today for around €534.

HTC Droid Incredible 2 shows up in Verizon’s system

Well, look what we’ve got here! Seeing that HTC just introduced the Incredible S — a world phone only available in the UK — it was only a matter of time before the phone hit the stateside. A trusted tipster just hit us with screen shots of Verizon’s internals containing a device dubbed HTC ADR6350. The other screenshot below has a listing for the HTC63503 with a description of “INCRD2.” Putting two and two together, we’d say with great confidence that the Incredible 2 is coming to Verizon in the near future — and we certainly wouldn’t be surprised if it had something to do with that “buttonless” shot we saw a while back. Stay tuned as we try and dig up more details… and in the meantime, peep the second screenshot after the break!

NEC’s razor-thin MEDIAS N-04C Android launched in Japan, gets carefully manhandled

We’ve already seen product shots of the crazy thin, drool-inducing NEC MEDIAS N-04C, but for a product boasting the “world’s thinnest” title, it’s always useful to see comparison shots for the sake of our curiosity. Thankfully, the good folks over at Akihabara News were present at DoCoMo’s launch event, and they were able to get up close to inspect this 7.7mm-thin Android 2.2 handset (with Android 2.3 upgrade available around July). It’s pretty amazing considering all the goodies packed within this phone — here’s a quick recap: NFC, 1seg TV Tuner, infrared port, 5 megapixel camera, 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 chip, etc. Oh, and this phone uses Gorilla Glass, too. If you happen to reside in Japan — which is where it’ll remain exclusive to — you’ll be able to pick up this NEC in black or white flavor on March 15, though price has yet to be announced. Cellphones are dangerous / not dangerous: handsets alter brain activity — scientists don’t know what that means

Cellphones are bad, mmkay? Or at least that is what many want us to believe, what with all these warning labels and studies telling us that mobile users will end up with brain cancer and kidney damage. Not to mention the dangers of phone addiction — horror of horrors — for our youth. Now, the National Institutes of Health have shown that radiation from your phone’s antenna turns you into a supergenius increases brain activity. Using positron emission tomography (PET) scans on 47 individuals with a muted phone on each ear (to prevent aural brain stimulation), the study found a seven percent increase in brain activity in the area closest to the phones’ antennas when receiving a call. The catch — scientists don’t know “whether this is detrimental or if it could even be beneficial,” so don’t go trading your Cell-Mate in for a Bluetooth headset just yet.

Xperia Play shows up in Verizon’s inventory

By now you should be doubt-free that the Xperia Play exists and is coming to Verizon, but if not, let this clear things up. A well-trusted tipster has just sent us the above screen shot of the Sony R800X (the ‘x’ here indicating CDMA as opposed to the model R800i we’ve been seeing), better known as the Xperia Play, hanging out in Verizon’s system. ZTE Skate coming near you later this year with Android 2.3, 4.3-inch goodness

For most of us, ZTE’s only known for its budget Android devices in the cellphone market, but this ever-expanding company’s aiming to change its image with a slightly more powerful flagship device come May. Dubbed the Skate, this Android 2.3 smartphone sports a generous 4.3-inch display (although no screen type or resolution is specified here), and is powered by an unnamed 800MHz processor plus a soon-obsolete Adreno 200 GPU. There’s also a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash on the back, along with the usual Bluetooth, A-GPS, and WiFi bundle. Sadly, the listed cellular frequencies indicate that the Skate won’t be heading to the US any time soon, which is rather ironic given ZTE’s desire to make it big in the North American consumer market this year. HTC’s Facebook-loving phones show up in a series of press shots

Just a few days ago we heard that HTC might be prepping some lower-end devices with dedicated Facebook widgets, and well, here they are. The two devices — one featuring a full keyboard and a less ugly one with full touchscreen — definitely have a Facebook button, and while we know nothing of specs yet, various sources have reported that Facebook updates will be streamed directly to the widget, the camera will upload directly to Facebook, and the phones, which will run a stripped down Android build, will have minimal storage. We’re not soothsayers, but we have a feeling we’ll know more tomorrow, when HTC’s MWC press event gets under way. Hit the source for a shot of the other phone.

Qualcomm promises Netflix streaming support on ‘future Android devices’ with Snapdragon

Qualcomm has apparently figured out what it takes to get Netflix on Android, announcing “future devices” with its Snapdragon mobile processors (like the LG Revolution) will meet all of the DRM requirements for Watch Instantly. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to bode well for your existing Android device, but at least future phones won’t have to look on Windows Phone 7 and iOS with envy. Besides a turnkey package for manufacturers to support Netflix in their devices, it also promises plenty of dedicated decoding power to enhance battery life and improve picture quality which can be observed as it demos the Netflix app (hope they brought their own proxy) at Mobile World Congress this week.

Eighth Circuit declares RAZR a computer under federal law

There’s little doubt that today’s smartphones are pocketable computers — they’re equally or more powerful than the desktop PCs of yesteryear — but what about dumbphones? Well, in US v. Kramer, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals just held that a Motorola Motorazr V3 fits the federal statutory definition for a computer — and quoted Woz in the opinion: “Everything has a computer in it nowadays.” Seems a bit silly to call a RAZR a computer, but courts can only interpret existing laws, not make new ones — and US law says a computer is “an electronic, magnetic, optical, electrochemical, or other high speed data processing device performing logical, arithmetic, or storage functions.” Because this was the first time a federal appeals court had ruled on the issue, the Eighth Circuit set a precedent that other courts are likely to follow. And yes, the court is aware such a definition may include microwaves and coffee makers, and informed Congress that it should change the law if it doesn’t like it. Regardless of whether you agree, this interpretation added some jail time for a guy who pled guilty to trying to engage in sexual activity with a minor, so the mild absurdity of it all is fine by us. Somewhere Chris Hansen is smiling.
