Hitachi displays a capacitive screen capable of accepting stylus input (video)

Can someone ring up Lucifer and check that his heating’s still working? Hitachi has achieved the unthinkable in bringing together the high precision and input flexibility of resistive touchscreens with the finger friendliness of capacitive panels. It’s graced this year’s FPD trade show with a new prototype that offers the capacitive functionality we’re all used to by now, augmented with the ability to recognize input from a stylus or, perhaps more importantly, gloved hands. We’re sure we can hear the sound of cheering coming from the chilly shores of Scandinavia right now. If all goes well, Hitachi should be able to bring them (and you, and the rest of the world) this finger-saving innovation at some point in late 2011, after production gets going in the second half of that year. Video demonstration after the break.

Nissan New Mobility Concept EV seats two, looks to a more sustainable future (video)

Nissan’s Leaf may be the company’s one-size-fits-all EV play for the mainstream market, but the company is apparently not content with just the one horse in its electric stable. Unveiled today at its Yokohama HQ, the Nissan New Mobility Concept is a teeny tiny two-person transporter that aims to solve the problems of commuting in high-density urban and tourist environments. You’ll notice there’s only one seat in the image above and videos after the break, but we’re still talking about a proposed design here rather than the finished article. Range is set at 100km (62 miles) and maximum speed is 75kph (47mph), both of which should betray the little doorless vehicle’s humble ambitions. Skip past the break to see it gliding around soundlessly inside Nissan’s vast halls.

Liquavista displays get flexible, ‘unbreakable,’ still rather theoretical (video)

Liquavista displays get flexible, 'unbreakable,' still rather theoretical (video)

The next generation of display technology is still that, next, but despite being a future away it continues to get better. Liquavista keeps wowing us with various demonstrations of its electrowetting technology offering full color, high refresh rates, visibility in all lighting conditions, and low power consumption to boot. Now they’re bendy too, with the company releasing footage of a prototype that’s flexible. It’s also said to be “unbreakable,” demonstrated by a person wearing latex gloves gently tapping on the screen — because, you know, that’s about as tough as it gets outside of the lab. Video is after the break, along with full PR, but in neither will you find any hope of seeing this tech for real before the second half of next year.

MSI WindPad tablet design concepts rendered, available in your choice of innie or outie

It’s a bit odd to see a gadget go from sitting in your hand to sitting in the output file of some renderer but, if images uncovered by blogeee.net are as legit as they’re said to be, MSI looks to be thinking a redesign for its upcoming WindPad tablet. Two different versions are shown, one with a chromed bezel that’s not entirely unlike the one we played with previously, and another with what looks to be edges that are not convex but instead concave, which actually seems like it could be quite nice for carrying whilst sauntering about the penthouse. On the back is a raised black surface that surely can’t be glass… right? Anyhow, there’s no being sure of the legitimacy of these renders, but both look respectable enough to show up on this tablet whenever it shows up at retail, supposedly by the end of the year.

Hyundai IT shows off 70-inch multitouch table concept

There’s not a ton of details on this one just yet, but Hyundai IT is reportedly showing off this 70-inch multitouch table at the Korea Electronics Show this week — in concept form, at least. While there’s no specs — apart from the fact that it’s “HD” — Hyundai is apparently saying that you’d be able to use the display either as a Surface-like multitouch table or as a TV, although it’s not clear if that means it actually tilts up. Contrary to appearances, however, the table apparently doesn’t function as a phone. Here’s hoping Hyundai will actually show it off in action once the show gets underway.

Fujitsu’s Windows 7 tablet concepts make cameo at CEATEC

While nowhere near as impressive (or as tangible / interactive) as its dual-touchscreen concept phone, Fujitsu’s Windows 7 tablet prototypes are much more practical in design than some of its other concepts it’s shown at CEATEC from years past. And yet, the pair of slates were still relegated to behind glass enclosures and just stickers for screens, which leaves us with little to say but a lot to show for it. So let’s get in with the show: pictures below.

NTT DoCoMo’s Taion Heart supports rarely-used soul-2-soul Bluetooth profile (video)

A Valediction: Electronically Assuaging Longing

As virtuous men travel mildly’away,
And cling to their Taion Hearts, to goe,
Whilst their Heart-equpped friends doe say,
The pulse goes now, thanks, and some say,
to NTT DoCoMo.

So let us grip, and make no noise,
No Skype calls, nor instant messages send,
‘Twere illuminations of our joyes
To pulsate the complementary device of our love rend.

Gripping of t’heart sends light and color,
Bluetooth sync reckons what it did and meant,
But vibration of the other,
Though greater farre, is innocent.

Additional reporting by John Donne; video after the break

Seat’s Ibe concept is the electric sport coupe of our dreams we’ll probably never wake up to

Seat's Ibe concept is the electric sport coupe of our dreams that we'll probably never wake up to

Seat doesn’t have much of a presence here in the US. In fact, we’re sure 10 out of 10 ‘Mericans would mispronounce the Spanish company’s name given the chance. (It’s “SAY-at,” for the record.) And that’s totally fine, because at this point Seat largely produces generally boring VW-based hatchbacks, sedans, and vans. The Ibe concept, however, is good reason to get a little more familiar with the brand. Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, this curvaceous coupe offers 2+2 seating and a deliciously lithe 2,425lb curb weight, doubly notable due to the batteries required to spin its entirely electric underpinnings. The heart is a 102hp motor with 148lb/ft of torque, offering a top speed of 100mph, 81 miles of range, and a 0-60 time of about 10 seconds. Okay, so that’s performance more in-line with Honda’s CR-Z than Tesla’s Roadster, but the weight and torque should make it a blast to drive — assuming it ever sees production. If it does it certainly won’t be filled with the lovely white interior pictured after the break. Imagine trying to keep that clean…

Peugeot shows off tablet-equipped HR1 concept vehicle

Yes, not even an auto show can escape a bit of tablet news these days. This one comes courtesy of Peugeot, which is showing off its new HR1 concept vehicle at the Paris Motor Show, and which, as you can see above, comes complete with what appears to be an Archos tablet of some sort. Details on it are otherwise a bit light, but the tablet does apparently dock with the car and connect to the in-dash system, which itself boasts a heads-up display and a movement recognition system that’ll let you scroll though options (and attract passers-by) with a wave of your hand. As for the vehicle itself, it’s a hybrid that promises 81 miles per gallon, and boasts a whole host of other impressive features, not the least of which are some electric scissor doors that will let you get into tight parking spots. Unfortunately, Peugeot also says it doesn’t currently have any plans to actually bring the vehicle to market. Hit up the links below for a closer look.

Jaguar C-X75 is the 780bhp electric supercar we’ve all been waiting for, likely to keep us waiting (video)

Ouch! It really stings to see the curvaceous spectacles that car designers can come up with, only to then find out the resulting electric speedsters are either far too expensive or nowhere near becoming a reality. Latest in this group of four-wheeled objects of desire is Jaguar’s C-X75, which roars from 0 to 60mph in 3.4 seconds, cranks out 780bhp courtesy of a quartet of electric motors and a pair of micro gas turbines, and reaches a screaming 205mph at its absolute zenith. You can go for 68 miles just on electric juice or 560 if you let the gasworks recharge the Li-ion battery pack on the go. So it’s gorgeous inside and out, it comes with swan doors, high-res LCD screens and an aluminum body, and it has less chance of being on sale than a dodo sandwich. Yep, it’s an electric supercar alright. See the C-X75 on video after the break.
