Engadget giveaway: win a Computer Engineer Barbie!

You probably already know this, but here at Engadget, we love our readers. And, whenever we get the chance, we love to give a little back. Today, we’re happy to have a brand new Computer Engineer Barbie to offer up to one random, lucky commenter. This Barbie has a new career and a new attitude to match it, and we think she’s pretty cool. All you’ll need to do to win her is to leave a comment below — after reading the rules, of course.

Thanks to Mattel for providing us with the doll.

The rules:

  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to all residents of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Canada (excluding Quebec), 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winners will be chosen randomly. Four winners will receive one Computer Engineer Barbie.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
  • Entries can be submitted until Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

These lovely fashion accessories, which you’ll find in today’s edition of our Holiday Gift Guide, feature a curved E Ink display capable of showing two time zones of your choice simultaneously — perfect for the geeky globetrotter. Windows Phone 7 beats iPhone 4 and Android … in a grilling contest (video)

Let’s face it, it’s a question the world’s been dying to know the answer to: which of the T-Mobile G2, HTC Surround and iPhone 4 will withstand a (literal) grilling the longest? Well, just in time for a mildly singed breakfast today, we have the answer. As you might have surmised from the title, HTC’s WP7-equipped Surround showed the most endurance, though in the end it too cashed out its Earthly credits and moved on to that great scrapyard in the sky. Video of its final moments awaits after the break.

Bacarobo ‘stupid robot’ contest is back, and it’s hilarious (video)

Our love of tech, gadgets, and anything, really, with blinking lights means that while we certainly value usability and quality in our consumer electronics, there will always be a place in our hearts for the utterly useless. And we’re definitely not alone here, as the popularity of the annual Bacarobo (stupid robot) contest will tell you. This year’s event was held in Budapest, Hungary, and featured a number of the silliest robots you’ve never seen before — all designed to get a laugh. The contest is judged in true hackneyed Gong Show-esque fashion with an applause meter, and the winner received a €2,000 ($2,700 USD) prize. And that’s nothing to laugh at! But enough chatter: peep the video after the break to see for yourself.

Case Contest Celebrates Urban Living

case-mate-contest.jpgCase-Mate already allows people to design their own custom device cases. Now you can win $1,000 by designing a great one. Case-Mate is partnering with BlackBooks for “The City Is Your Canvas Contest.” The winner will have their work incorporated into a suite of creative assets, which shoppers can then use to create their own unique case. You need to make a finished design, it seems, but also tools for mash-ups.

To win the contest, you’ll need to think about what “the city” means to a modern artist. The winner will need to provide 20 to 25 vector assets (of which 2 to 4 are “spray can elements,” 2 to 4 are predesigned cases, 4 to 6 are background colors, and 4 to 6 are colorize colors. To enter, however, you’ll only need to submit 1 to 3 pieces of visual art. The contest ends December 31, and the winner gets $1,000, plus an unspecified percentage of the revenue for cases sold. It could be a good way to get your work noticed.

Students get their hands on Microsoft’s Adaptive Keyboard, adapt it to their nefarious ways (video)

Students get their hands on Microsoft's Adaptive Keyboard, adapt it to their nefarious ways (video)

When Microsoft announced its Adaptive Keyboard, backed by an LCD not entirely unlike the Optimus Maximus and its dynamic ways, the company said it’d be hosting a contest to see which students could come up with the best way to use the thing. Now it’s time to look at some of the results. Highlights? One app, with the press of a button, replaces your keys with the icons on your desktop. Another brings Windows Media Player playlist control to your fingertips, and a third lets coders easily navigate namespace, class, and member variables. Oh, and then there’s the app that dynamically remaps your keys to frustrate keyloggers — and users. There are lots more, all presented by some generally uncomfortable looking students over the course of the video embedded after the break. Warning: it’s 24 minutes long, so you’d best get a refill before clicking “Play.”

Nokia’s latest Calling All Innovators developer contest features AT&T involvement

Nokia has made no secret of the fact that improving its long-tepid relationship with the North American market is a priority — but we’ll admit, we didn’t expect AT&T to throw its weight behind a rather massive Symbian developer contest this quickly. The concept is simple: develop and submit an app targeting the N8 by January 28 of next year; the best one (in Nokia’s eyes) gets a cool quarter million, while 17 (yes, seventeen) runners-up get $150,000, which is still a pretty gigantic number. What makes this fascinating is that although AT&T had dipped its toes in the Symbian waters a few times over the years, it currently offers nothing but the Vivaz and refurbished E71x units — and it hasn’t announced any plans to carry the N8. Considering the size and scope of this contest, Nokia’s definitely putting its money where its mouth is — it seems to understand the importance of building a healthy third-party app catalog to drive a platform’s success — and we imagine AT&T’s got some announcements of its own in the coming months. Just a hunch.

Beneath The Earth Films Launches iPad Scavenger Hunt in NYC

Beneath The Earth Films - iPad HuntIf you don’t have an iPad yet and you want one, and you live in New York City, you could get your wish thanks to Beneath The Earth Films’ scavenger hunt. The contest pits movie junkies in New York City against one another. Each team gets seven clues to help identify the movie, the location, and the scene in question. They then have to rush to the location the movie was filmed to re-enact the scene in front of their own camera, and get a snapshot. Teams then upload the photos to Beneath The Earth Films, show them off on Facebook, and the best series of photos will earn one lucky winner an iPad.

The scavenger hunt is designed to drum up interest in Beneath The Earth Films and its new all-online film festival, which is the result of a year-long quest for indie movies and film projects that deserve wide distribution. Registration for the contest is open to September 4, 2010. On September 4, all the participating teams will get the clues and will have until midnight, September 6, to upload their photos and complete the hunt. There’s even a prize for the fastest to finish — even if they may not be the best. If you’re a huge movie buff and you’re a native of the Big Apple, this is the contest for you.
