Droid 2 rumored to be launching August 23rd with Android 2.2

We’ve certainly gotten a peak at quite a few Droid 2 details so far, but word of a release date has unfortunately never been among them. That now looks to have changed, however, with the folks at Android and Me reporting that a “trustworthy source” has informed them that the phone will be launching on August 23rd. According to the site, that date was apparently chosen so the Droid 2 would be the first phone to ship with Android 2.2 out of the box, although that of course remains to be confirmed (current test versions of the Droid 2 are said to be running Android 2.1). If recent rumors pan out, however, the Droid 2 wouldn’t be the first Droid to make the jump to Froyo — the original Droid is said to be getting the update in “late July,” while the Droid X will have to wait until late August.

Droid X, iPhones Show Bluetooth Keyboard Powers

keyboardphones.jpg

The Motorola Droid X has an amazing power that Motorola and Verizon Wireless aren’t promoting: it works with both Bluetooth keyboards and mice using the Bluetooth HID profile. In fact, I’m writing this right now on a Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000, in the Droid X’s email program.
I’ve tried a few Bluetooth keyboards, and results definitely vary. An Apple Bluetooth keyboard dropped its connection after a few sentences, but this Microsoft model is plugging along fine.
I’ve wondered for years why more smartphones don’t support add-on keyboards, because it turns them into much better productivity machines. With this portable yet roomy Bluetooth kit, I could easily write entire articles on the Droid X, much as I wrote my coverage of the 1999 South African elections on a Palm IIIx with a ThinkOutside keyboard.
The keyboard usage is very impressive, but the mouse is a bit more of a parlor trick. You can use a Bluetooth mouse to scroll through and select options on this phone, but the interface just wasn’t designed for mouse usage, and the whole thing feels like a gimmick.
The Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000 also works fine with the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS running iOS 4, letting me type notes and e-mails. The mouse didn’t pair with the iPhones, though.

Motorola’s Droid X up for pre-order today at Best Buy: $200, no pesky mail-in rebates

Sweatin’ those iPhone 4 reception issues? Got a thing for beastlier phones? Still perturbed that your white iPhone 4 pre-order didn’t exactly “work out” as expected? If you’ve found yourself nodding that noggin’ up and down upon reading any of the above questions, you should know that Best Buy’s offering pre-sales of Motorola’s forthcoming Droid X starting today. The benefit, naturally, is that you can avoid Verizon’s pesky $100 mail-in rebate, paying just $199.99 (plus all applicable taxes and bribes) to BB while grabbing a coveting spot in line for the next giant Android phone. Not like you needed an excuse to take a half-day today, but hey — at least you’ve now got a legitimate one.

Android 2.2 coming to Droid in ‘late July,’ Droid X in ‘late August?’

Care for some more specificity on when exactly to expect the Droid X to become even awesomer? Well, according to one “very reliable” source over at Droid Forums, we can look forward to a late August landing for Android 2.2 on the X, which will be preceded by a late July delivery on the venerable Droid. Both dates are caveated with an ominous “currently planned” proviso, so don’t consider them carved in (Mile)stone, but we’re liking the idea of Motorola having both its flagship devices tasting of Froyo by summer’s end. There’s no mention of the Droid 2, however, which may mean nothing or might suggest that handset’s still a fair way away from its release. We shall see.

Droid X torn down, found to contain stuff

We’ve gotta tell you, looking at that belligerent red eye gracing the visage of the Droid X, we weren’t entirely sure the thing wouldn’t go all robot apocalypse on us if we ever tried disassembling it. Thankfully, someone else has taken that risk for us, and now we’ve got all sorts of nude pictures to gawk at. This teardown comes complete with some very practical how-to instructions, including the advice to use your nails to pry the case open instead of a metal screwdriver — but only if you don’t want to leave your roided-up Droid with battle scars. Hit the source link for more of the good stuff.

Gadget Lab Podcast: Droid X, iPhone 4, Android 2.2

We’re back with episode No. 2 of the new, improved, videographic Gadget Lab podcast. In this episode, Brian X. Chen and Dylan F. Tweney discuss the top gadget news of the week: The launch of the iPhone 4, the rollout of Verizon’s and Motorola’s Droid X, and the public release of Android 2.2, aka “FroYo,” which sports a fully functional version of Adobe’s Flash Player 10.1.

(It didn’t make it into this podcast, but don’t miss Brian’s video introduction to the iPhone 4.)

We also show off a handful of iPad and iPhone apps: the excellent photojournalism-centric Guardian Eyewitness, an impressive library of medical images called 3D4 Medical, and a photo shooting, editing and sharing app called Camera+.

Oh, and then there’s iKamasutra XL.

And we wrap things up with a plea to save the seahorses. (Seriously: Overfishing may be leading some of them to the brink of extinction.)

Swype psyched to be on Droid X, fifty total devices by the end of 2010

Love it or lump it, looks like Swype is making inroads into the mobile space. We’ve seen it on a few handsets already, and we know how eager the company is to get on the iPhone, but still it doesn’t look like Apple’s ready to bite. In the meantime, it seems that the company is more than happy to make due with the likes of HTC, Samsung, and Motorola — the latter having gone with Swype for the Droid X. According to CEO Mike McSherry, this is the company’s biggest coup yet, though certainly not the last — he says to look for the app on some fifty phones by late 2010.

Josh and Jimmy get busy in hot 4X action (video)

Josh on Fallon

iPhone 4 and Motorola’s Droid X, together on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in some kind of weird erotic mashup. Gadgets, a band, celebrity impersonations, and more awkward sexual innuendo with an ex-supermodel than a nerd can shake a retina display at. Check it all out after the break.

Droid X vs. iPhone 4… hang out!

So, these aren’t exactly the most similar phones ever. The Droid X has Android, a high res 4.3-inch screen, Verizon, and a hump in back. The iPhone 4 has iOS, a higher res 3.5-inch screen, and some of the slimmest smartphone dimensions ever. Sure, they’re both flagship handsets for their respective teams, but we’d really rather live in a world where Droid X and iPhone 4 hang out after work for drinks than one where they stab each other in their silicon hearts. Sure, there’d be a bit of banter, but isn’t there always between friends?

Hands On With the Motorola Droid X

The new Motorola Droid X phone, with its slim profile and striking display, doesn’t set a new standard in industrial design. But what it lacks in style, it makes up for with features, including an emphasis on high-definition video recording and playback.

The $200 Droid X (after a $100 rebate and with a two-year Verizon contract) will run Google’s latest Android 2.2 Froyo operating system and will include Adobe Flash Player 10.1, following an update “late summer.”

There’s one key difference between the Droid X and the original Droid: The Droid X doesn’t have a physical keyboard. Instead its 4.3-inch display makes it one of the biggest touchscreens available among smartphones today.

The Droid X’s screen is gorgeous and incredibly responsive to touch. The display has a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels compared to 800 x 480 pixels on the HTC Evo. Placed side-by-side, the Evo’s display seemed brighter and more vivid.

But the Droid X’s touchscreen is a treat. It’s extremely responsive without crossing over into the annoyingly sensitive territory.

Unlike the Evo, which has its four Android buttons (Home, Menu, Back and Search) sleekly integrated into the frame, the Droid X has four physical buttons at the bottom of the phone and it is jarring. The matte black finish of the phone gives it a dull appearance compared to the glossy shine of the Evo.
