Verizon delays Android 2.1 rollout to Motorola Droid, new date is TBD

Oh, bollocks! After hearing for days that Verizon Wireless would be pushing out the highly anticipated Android 2.1 update to its stable of Droid users, along comes this. Internal company documentation clearly states that the aforementioned update won’t be going down today, and there’s no clear indication of when it will. To quote:

  • “The OTA software update for the Droid by Motorola is TBD. A new date will be communicated as soon as possible.
  • The 3/18 OTA software update will not happen as planned. A new date will be communicated as soon as possible.”

We knew things were just too quiet after the noon hour, and now we know why. An impromptu support group meeting has been scheduled for 1:30PM ET, though we’re hearing the location is still being decided…

Droid’s Android 2.1 update going to ‘a small number’ of users tomorrow

Possibly confirming those leaks suggesting that the first volley of Droid updates to Android 2.1 would be limited to just a quarter million folks, Verizon just shot out a statement to let everyone know that the over-the-air push is “being deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users tomorrow afternoon.” Beyond that, no dates are given for the rest of us to get in on the action — probably because Verizon and Motorola need to see how the first group manages before sending out the remainder — so for the moment, just hope that you’re one of these incredibly blessed “test users” and stay tuned.

Verizon Finally Announces Droid 2.1 Upgrade

Motorola_Droid_Vertical.jpg

Could this have taken any longer? Verizon Wireless has finally unveiled an Android 2.1 update for the Motorola Droid, which will finally give the handset feature parity (at least software wise) with the Google Nexus One after several false starts early in February.
By installing the update, Motorola Droid owners will now get pinch-to-zoom in the browser, Gallery, and Google Maps. That’s the big one, but there’s much more: it also includes new weather and news widgets, voice-to-text entry, a 3D gallery layout, live wallpapers, free Yahoo Mail support, an updated Google Maps app, a night mode for Google Maps Navigation, and several smaller pattern-lock and audio enhancements.
Get the details and instructions now at verizonwireless.com/droidsupport. Dive in and let us know how it works for you in the comments.

Verizon posts Android 2.1 upgrade details for Droid

Chatter over the Milestone’s impending Android 2.1 update has reached a rolling boil in recent days, but it’s actually the Milestone’s American cousin that’s getting the official coverage today. That’s right: Verizon’s just posted details on the Droid’s upgrade to Google’s latest and greatest cut, and you’ve got the expected host of goodies including the new 3D Gallery app, voice-to-text, news and weather widgets, pinch-to-zoom support, “improved” pattern lock, and — get this — live wallpapers, something we’d originally thought Motorola might leave out. It appears to lack the Nexus One’s 3D app launcher (which we’d expected), but it’s still pure gold for owners. Let us know when you’ve gotten it, eh?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: Leaked documentation indicates we’ll see this start to get rolled out in batches of 250,000 at a time starting on Thursday — not too long of a wait (unless you’re in the very last batch, that is).

Google Nexus One Sales Still Sluggish, Says Analytics Firm

nexusone_day74_salescomparison

Google has sold about 135,000 HTC Nexus One phones in the 74 days since the device launched, a rate that’s about eight times lower than Motorola’s Droid and Apple’s original iPhone, says mobile analytics company Flurry.

During the same amount of time, Verizon sold about 1.05 million Droids, while the original iPhone sold 1 million.

By comparison, the iPhone 3GS sold 1.6 million units in just one week.

Flurry chose to look at Nexus One’s popularity over 74 days because it took Apple’s original iPhone that many days to cross 1 million units in sales, says the company.

“The comparison is interesting because the iPhone and Nexus One each represent Apple and Google’s first fully branded handsets,” wrote Peter Farago, vice-president of marketing for Flurry in a blog post. “We add the Motorola Droid as a point of comparison, and because it’s the fastest selling Android phone to date.”

The numbers should come as no surprise to mobile phone enthusiasts and industry executives, though Google has never disclosed exactly how many Nexus Ones are in the hands of customers to date.

In January, Google introduced the Nexus One as the first Android device that would be sold by the search company itself, rather than a manufacturing or carrier partner. The device retails for $180 with a 2-year T-Mobile contract, while an unsubsidized version is available for $530. But consumers can only buy it through Google’s online store.

The Nexus One, however, debuted to a host of complaints from users unhappy with the poor customer support from Google, which offered no phone or in-store help. Last month, Google finally introduced a phone support line. The Nexus One has also faced device-related issues, such as its inability to effectively connect to T-Mobile’s 3G network and complaints about the touchscreen.

Google’s phone also lacks the “‘wow’ factor that is now expected with each new challenger to the iPhone,” said Farago earlier this year. In January, Flurry estimated that Google sold about 20,000 Nexus One in the first week, compared to 250,000 for the Motorola Droid and 1.6 million for the iPhone 3G.

Interestingly, sales of the Motorola Droid edged out the first generation iPhone in the first 74 days. Farago says when the iPhone first made its debut, consumers’ perception of a mobile computing device was different. Most smartphone users who had data plans used it just to check e-mail or occasionally surf the internet.

But the iPhone changed that. Third party applications and mobile browsers that could render web pages on the phone as attractively on the PC led to an explosion in the use of smartphones.

“Until the iPhone was introduced, most consumers, especially in the U.S. had thought of their phones as, well, just phones,” says Farago.

As one of the most anticipated Android phones, the Droid benefited from the increased consumer interest and demand for smartphones. Droid also launched on Verizon Wireless, whose subscriber base last year was higher compared to AT&T in 2007.  Verizon backed the Droid launch with advertising support of at least $100 million.

Meanwhile, Nexus One’s sales indicate that Google may have made a mis-step in its decision to sell the device directly through its online store. Add to that the choice of T-Mobile as the launch partner and its not that difficult to understand why the Nexus One isn’t sweeping the popularity polls.

Motorola Milestone with Android 2.1 hitting Bulgaria by March 20th, rest of Europe to follow?

We’d had some indication that Europe would be seeing Motorola Milestones running Android 2.1 roughly around this time, and it looks like we are now finally starting to get a few more specifics. According to Mobile Bulgaria, that country’s leading carrier, Vivacom, will begin selling Milestones equipped with Android 2.1 “by March 20th,” which should no doubt be just part of a broader European rollout in the coming days / weeks (that will hopefully extend to Canada as well). Unfortunately, things still aren’t any clearer for Droid users in the US, but you can be sure we’ll be watching every development on that front.

Cellphone inventor Marty Cooper uses a Droid…. and a Jitterbug

Sure, you read reviews and take recommendations from friends before you buy a new cellphone, but have you ever stopped to consider what the inventor of the cellphone uses on a daily basis? C-SPAN has, and recently took the opportunity to ask the man himself, Marty Cooper, that very question during a wide-ranging interview. While Cooper said that he has used an iPhone previously, he recently passed it on to his grandson in favor of a Motorola Droid, which he says he chose because he wanted to get more experience with Android. But that’s not all, Cooper also revealed that he carries a Jitterbug as well for when he just wants to make phone calls. Surprising for a pioneer of mobile technology? Not exactly, as Cooper actually co-founded Jitterbug with his wife, who he credits with inventing the phone. Head on past the break to watch the complete interview.

Does Android dream of DIY cushions?

With the estate of Philip K. Dick up in arms over the slightest commercial reference to his published works, we may come to regret the above headline. But it’s worth the risk to bring more attention to this lovely, handcrafted Android pillow. Covered in fleece and filled with fluffy polyester for a texture that creator Craftsquatch describes as “firm yet springy,” the cuddly 12-inch square, made-to-order cushion can be yours for $20 before shipping. Verizons DROID Commercial: Inaccurate

droid commercial.jpg

It looks like Verizon’s advertising firm isn’t insanely obsessed with the Android 2.0 operating system as much as I am.  In their latest commercial for the Motorola DROID , they made an error in the home screen: the application launcher button at the bottom of the screen is the button from Android 1.0 (pictured on the left.)
The screen shot on the right, from our unboxing story, shows the true application launcher button Android 2.0. The new button is wider and the up arrow doesn’t have a ring around it.  Check out the commercial after the break so you can see this inaccuracy in action!

What other tech commercials have you seen recently with errors in them?
