Engadget’s gear of CES 2010

CES is Engadget’s biggest event of the year, but for the most part we don’t have any requirements on what editors should bring other than “a laptop” and “a camera.” That means there’s usually quite an array of devices and tools on hand — and every year we try some new things that make an immediate impression. We threw out some basic gear statistics in our annual CES wrap-up post, but we also wanted to highlight some super-useful new tools we brought to Vegas with us this year. Some of it is state-of-the-art expensive, some of it is brain-dead simple, but all of it helped us rock out our biggest CES ever. Read on!

It was Vegas, baby — Engadget departs CES 2010

Can you believe it? Another CES has come and gone — and the crew of Engadget was there to capture all the highs and the lows. If you haven’t been keeping track of things, this year was an insanely jam-packed frenzy of gadgety goodness. Our team bounced between the towering monuments to 3D TV, a boatload of smartbooks, netbooks, and tablets, an unexpected deluge of “superphones” and smartphones, and the requisite helping of crazy Crapgadgets and mountains of new laptops with the style and grace of a ballerina on opening night. Of course, we captured all of that madness on the pages (and pages, and pages) of Engadget, blowing it out with our biggest CES showing ever and putting a bunch of our new redesign elements into play to get news to you guys faster. But like all awesome things, they must come to an end, and after a week in Las Vegas, everyone is definitely ready to truck it on home. We wanted to leave our readers with a taste of what CES was like for us (including some awesome video of senior editor Thomas Ricker breaking it down). We also want to shout out a big thank you to you guys and girls for coming to the site every day and making this our biggest and best CES ever. You absolutely rule forever.

n’Gadgets store has us pondering a name change, new line of business

Engadget’s iconic and recognizable logo has a long history of being used in unauthorized ways. We should probably be appalled or something, but we’ll leave that to the lawyers — because we can’t help but find it amusing. This time around, it’s Batteries n’Gadgets — a store at a mall in Toronto — that saw fit to take liberties with our logo. Nice work, Canada!

[Thanks, David]

A New Year’s gift to Engadget readers: 3 minutes of Woz

Steve Wozniak is a fascinating man. Super smart, funny, incredibly perceptive… and just a tiny bit crazy. Please enjoy three minutes (and 15 seconds) of pure Woz after the break. It’s our gift to you.

Update: For those wondering about the GPS setup Woz talks about in the interview, he’s posted up a short video of his rig in comments! We’re including a shot after the break.

Engadget’s top posts, 2009

Wow. Can you believe it? We made it all the way through 2009! We truly had some of the most amazing and exciting coverage ever on Engadget this past 12 months — and we figured it’s time to take a look back at the heaviest hitters from the last 365. This was a big year for us, we got a whole new look, an iPhone app (with more on the way), hired some new staff, got ourselves a show, went on late night TV, and managed to snap up some killer scoops and keep the news rolling (better than ever before, actually — this was by far our heaviest year for traffic). So let’s take a moment to reflect on what caused all the fuss in 2009, and yes, we know this list is Apple heavy. We blame you guys.

Top 20 most trafficked posts of 2009 (in order)

  1. Phil Schiller keynote live from WWDC 2009
  2. Live from Apple’s ‘It’s only rock and roll’ event
  3. Live from Apple’s iPhone OS 3.0 preview event
  4. Live from the Macworld 2009 keynote
  5. iPhone 3GS review
  6. Motorola Droid review
  7. Palm Pre: everything you ever wanted to know
  8. Exclusive: first Google Phone / Nexus One photos, Android 2.1 on-board
  9. HTC Hero review
  10. Windows 7 review
  11. Palm Pre review
  12. Microsoft sucks at Photoshop
  13. Microsoft announces availability of Windows 7 Beta and Windows Live
  14. Steve Jobs is taking a leave of absence from Apple due to health reasons
  15. Video: Sony’s PSP Go leaks out before E3, is obviously a go
  16. Motorola Droid first hands-on
  17. Windows 7 Beta goes public
  18. Modern Warfare 2’s Prestige Edition includes fully functioning night vision goggles
  19. Snow Leopard review
  20. Live from Palm’s CES press conference

And a few other statistics for 2009 (all related to Engadget Classic):

$38,204.57 – Retail value of stuff we gave away to readers
12,681 – total number of posts for 2009
1,821 – Number of galleries on Engadget for 2009
454 – Number of hands-on posts

Engadget logo now a thrilla in Manila

Even though your company might be based in Croatia, Malaysia, or scattered throughout US airports we’re all linked together by a single common thread: Google image search and a penchant for the Engadget logo. The latest infringer of our beloved IP is E-pins Corporation, a self-described telecommunications contractor employing some 500 people in the Philippines. With staff like that you’d think they could hire their own graphic designer.

[Thanks, Jeffrey S.]

Engadget’s logo gets boosted… for a Croatian civic action group!

We don’t know exactly what it is about the Engadget logo that people love so much (well, we have some ideas), but our name and likeness does seem to pop up in the most unusual places. This time, it’s more unusual than, er… usual. Apparently, our sweet E is being used as the prime designator for a Croatian “civil society organization” called e-misija. We don’t pretend to get exactly what it is they do, but anything with a promo video as sublime as the clip after the break sounds cool to us.

Note: Our logo is all over their YouTube page! See it in videos here.

[Thanks, Ahmed]

It’s time for another roundup of pundits espousing heartfelt admiration and none-too-bloody criticism of a pretty hot Apple product. How did they—I mean “it”—do this time around? Have a look-see…

As usual, this matrix is just the tip of the molehill—if you want to really get in deep with these colorful characters, here’s where to look:

Cnet – Kent German

Engadget – Josh Topolsky

And if we’ve missed your review, send it in: we’ll add it to the list.

Engadget Podcast 149 – 06.05.2009

As you may soon become aware, this week’s podcast is about two hours long. Now, we’re aware that this might present a difficult scenario for those of you who like to rent out a sensory deprivation room every week to maximize the experience of listening to Josh, Nilay and Paul babble, so here are some usage ideas for this “wild card” hour of listening to be spent in the real world:

  • Listen to the first half of the podcast twice
  • Stand in line for the Pre for an hour and then leave
  • Teach yourself to juggle Wiimotes
  • Make a recording of yourself lightly chuckling off and on for an hour

Those are just a few of the things we though of off the top of our heads, we’re sure you can improve upon these ideas when the moment of truth comes.
