Samsung’s SyncMaster U70 is 7-inches of extra real estate

We can’t get enough of these cute, fuzzy little add-on displays, and Samsung’s chipping in with the new U70 SyncMaster unit which just hit Korea, and is already available in Europe. The 7-inch display runs at a fairly standard 800 x 480 resolution, and plugs into a single USB port for power and image. It’s got 200 nits of brightness, a 400:1 contrast ratio and a 140 degree viewing angle, but like most of these displays is unfortunately Windows-only at the moment. You can pick one up for 99 Euro (about $127 US), but no word on whether or when this will make it Stateside.

Philips’ 56-inch Cinema 21:9 HDTV: not for Americans

Oh, bollocks! If one particular spokesman who opened up to ZDnet today is accurate, Philips’ totally sweet 56-inch Cinema 21:9 HDTV won’t ever be sold on American soil. Quite frankly, we’re wondering what’s up with Philips and its apparent disdain for the US market. It farmed out its Blu-ray / DVD and TV operations in North America to Funai, it didn’t even bother showing up in Vegas for CES, and anything even remotely swank that it produces seems to be reserved for those overseas. What happened to the worldwide love, Philips? Did someone give you the impression that Yanks wouldn’t buy one of these completely mesmerizing new panels? Sigh.

Philips’ 56-inch Cinema 21:9 HDTV gets showcased on video

Philips’ groundbreaking Cinema 21:9 HDTV looked so curious when it launched a fortnight ago that we actually questioned its authenticity. Clearly, this beauty is for real. Pocket-lint was lucky enough to be on-hand for its unveiling in London, and it hosted up a nice video showing off the 56-inch beast in action. The black bars you’ve grown used to detesting were indeed gone, and while Philips wouldn’t dole out any hard specifications, we are told that it boasts five HDMI sockets, a Spring release date and an estimated £3,000 ($4,276) price tag. Two Olympus Micro Four Thirds cameras rumored for soonish release

Usually, we’d just brush something such as this off and carry on about our day, but there are just too many stars aligning to ignore this one. Given that Olympus pledged its allegiance to Micro Four Thirds early on — not to mention that we’ve already seen proof of prototypes — we’re really, really tempted to believe the latest rumors from Russia. As the story goes, Olympus is gearing up to launch a pair of MFT cameras, likely named the M-1 and M-100. Both units are apt to be about the size of a bulky point-and-shoot, with the former boasting a 3.2-inch LCD monitor and HD video capture. Oh, and did we mention that PMA is just over a month away? Sounds like a perfect spot to launch this duo into the mainstream.

Sony XEL-1 OLED TV lands in the UK, now twice the price

Good news: The world’s thinnest and first commercially available OLED television — the Sony XEL-1 — is on sale in the UK today.

Bad news: It’ll cost Brits £3,489 (about $4,944) — that’s more than twice the price of the same set sold in the US.

Look, we knew the European price hikes were coming from Sony in 2009, but we weren’t expecting this. Then again, if you’re the type who thinks dropping a couple of thousand Quid on an 11-inch television makes sense, well, you probably won’t even notice.

Nokia’s Comes With Music service plans world tour

Nokia’s all-you-can-eat Comes With Music service has been humming along quite nicely across the pond, but until now, we’ve been left in the dark about its plans for world domination. No more, as a recent Reuters report has it that the unlimited music service should be headed to Australia, Asia and Singapore later this quarter and Latin America / USA sometime this year. We’re also told that more corners of Europe should get served in the future, though no window of time was handed out there. It should be interesting to see if any carriers jump in to subsidize these, but our gut feeling says they’ll be sold for a premium unlocked at your nearest Nokia flagship.

Microsoft accused by EU of harming web browser competition, again

Gulp, here we go again. The European Commission is accusing Microsoft of unfairly dominating its competition by bundling Internet Explorer with its Windows OS. Yup, the very same argument heard in the US courts more than a decade ago after Netscape saw its 86% market share plummet in the face of a bundled IE. The commission, which already fined Microsoft $1.35 billion for anti-competitive practices in early 2008, has published the following preliminary view on the matter:

“Microsoft’s tying of Internet Explorer to the Windows operating system harms competition between web browsers, undermines product innovation and ultimately reduces consumer choice.”

Microsoft has 8 weeks to reply to the charge. It’s worth noting that while Apple bundles its Safari browser with OS X, Apple commands a much, much smaller share of the operating system and web browser markets globally, particularly outside of the US. The EU’s ruling does, perhaps, shed some light on why Apple’s App Store is suddenly stocked with a variety of browsers for the hot selling iPhone, eh? Regardless, we have a feeling that the Norwegian cats behind Opera are feeling pretty smug right about now; Google too, as it kicks back licking its Chromium chops on the road to dominating “The Cloud.”

Philips introduces ultra widescreen Cinema 21:9 LCD TV

Last July, we took a look at whether or not ultra widescreen HDTVs could eventually become a reality. Fast forward half a year and change, and here we have Philips answering that with a resounding “sure, why not?” The Cinema 21:9 is said to be the planet’s first cinema-proportioned LCD TV, and of course, it’ll also incorporate Ambilight technology around the borders. We’ll be frank — we had our doubts upon seeing the lackluster website linked below that this thing was even real, but Philips itself confirmed to us that the panel will be shipping this Spring in Germany, Belgium, the UK and France. We’re also told that a full site will launch on January 29th, though no pricing details (nor a US release date) were mentioned. Our one and only wish? That this thing would’ve been displayed at CES last week.

Palm CEO says Europe gets Pre in the first half, too

According to the press materials, Palm hadn’t intended to announce a timeframe for the 3G GSM version of the Pre this week, but Ed Colligan can pretty much do and say whatever he pleases — it’s one of the perks of wearing the CEO hat — and he’s apparently mentioned in an interview with IDG that it’ll roll out in the first half of 2009. That puts the model right in line with the launch window for the CDMA-based Sprint version, giving the carrier virtually zero exclusivity on the global stage — so if 1337 h4x0rz can figure out how to unlock the thing (and if we were betting folk, we’d wager they can), this all means EDGE-only Pres could end up on AT&T and T-Mobile USA lickety-split. Even if that means losing the European 3G guts, you know you’d buy it. Come on now, don’t lie to yourself.
