Microsoft Kin notifications have up to fifteen minute delay

Microsoft’s new Kin phones promise to let “Generation Upload” stay in touch with their friends via integrated, streamlined social networking. It’s the main draw, the big selling point, the reason why teens, tweens and those who want to share pictures of huge fat men eating Chipotle burritos will get one. But unless you hit a manual refresh button, Microsoft says Kin will only let you stay in touch in fifteen-minute intervals. That’s how often the company’s servers will ping Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Windows Live to grab info from the cloud. “We didn’t want the device always pulling data from the network,” said one engineer, citing battery life and immature social network APIs as primary reasons why. Our take? This might be how Microsoft intends to leverage cheaper data plans out of Verizon — by subtly throttling data usage — providing an always-on 3G experience at a tween-affordable price. We’ll just have to see if “Heather M.” appreciates that, when her clothing recommendation is subject to a quarter-hour delay.

Is this proof of a Verizon iPhone? (updated)

According to a tip we’ve just received, Apple’s long-rumored, hotly-desired Verizon iPhone could turn out to be more than mere fantasy, though we warn you, this is nothing to start placing bets on. If you believe the above graphic — a snippet of data allegedly from the recently reliable Flurry Analytics — then at least a handful of non-AT&T phones are currently in play. The numbers show a polling of carriers a particular app is being tested on, and there’s no denying that Verizon is most certainly on that list… albeit in small numbers. Now obviously this is in no way conclusive evidence of anything, and you’ve got to allow for the possibility — however pathetic and slim — that someone is just Photoshopping this little infographic, but if it’s accurate, well… that’s something.

Update: Proof? Probably not. We’ve been in touch with Flurry who thinks the data is from Verizon DSL or FiOS subscribers using their iPhone at home over WiFi.

Microsoft: Kin and Windows Phone 7 will share more technology over time

Sure, Nokia’s already proven that it’s possible to commercially support multiple mobile platforms at a time, but is it really a great idea? Even Nokia ultimately ended up collapsing Series 80 and 90 in to S60 over the years, but Microsoft’s going in a distinctly different direction by rolling out Kin and Windows Phone 7 at nearly the same time (plus the spectre of WinMo 6.x, which’ll undoubtedly soldier on in some niche markets for years to come). While both products share common underpinnings, they’re different enough so that there’s really no user-facing commonality beyond some shared compatibility with services like Zune and Windows Live, and frankly, we don’t get it — why not start from a generic, extensible platform like Windows Phone 7 and work outwards to create Kin as a specialized sub-product?

We chatted with Microsoft GM Matt Bencke today to get a feel for why there isn’t more technical synergy between two products that obviously share the overwhelming majority of their DNA, and basically, the Reader’s Digest version of the conversation is that they intend to get there eventually. “We’re going to share more and more in terms of code,” he said — though we weren’t able to nail him down to a timeline for making that happen — ultimately agreeing that it was fair to say you’d start to see the platforms converge over time. If we had to guess, Kin’s suffering from the fact that it was approved and set in stone before Windows Phone 7 even existed in its current incarnation, and it’s going to take Redmond a little while to get the projects synced. See the critical portion of the talk on video after the break.

HTC EVO 4G to get boatload of accessories in Sprint stores

So we just got handed some sort of Sprint “overview deck” going over some of the HTC EVO 4G’s finer points — and rest assured, there are many fine points — but all told, there’s not a lot new here; there’s no release date that we can see, and we’re already well acquainted with its 4G hotspot capability and the major features of Android 2.1 integrated with Sense. That said, our attention was drawn to the last couple slides, which reveal a bunch of accessories that’ll be available just in case the phone itself isn’t enough to max out the plastic. Specifically, there’s a dock with HDMI out (“likely” available after launch), a car mount, screen protectors, several kind of cases and gels in every color of the rainbow, and a couple different kinds of replacement shells — one multi-color kit with a handful of snazzy shades, and a custom design option that sounds similar to what T-Mobile has done in the past with some of its devices. Oh, and there’s another gem in here: a battery charging holster — something along the lines of a Case-Mate Fuel, from what we can tell — that’ll come after the initial launch.

That’s about it as accessories go, but we’d like to call your attention to the second slide in the deck, which calls out a mysterious “Segment 1” as Sprint’s primary target market for the EVO 4G, with “Segment 6” gaining importance after the phone drops in price — possibly around the holidays this year. From what it sounds, Sprint actually has all of its target demographics grouped into numbered buckets; we’d love to know what they all are, but needless to say, you can count us (and probably most of you) in this fun-loving, awesome Segment 1. You know, the cool kids.

[Thanks, Crimmage]

Flip Slide HD caught outside the box, still looks weird

Maybe it’s just the odd angle of this newly submitted out-of-box photograph, or maybe we just aren’t smart enough for Cisco, but we still we can’t quite figure out what exactly is going on here. We suppose the flip-up screen performs as a sort of poor man’s photo frame? At risk of being rude, we’re pretty sure we’d just like a thinner video camera, but when it comes to selling millions dirt cheap, dirt simple video cameras to the masses, the makers of the seemingly imminent Flip Slide HD are of course the experts.

HP Slate to cost $549, have 1.6GHz Atom Z530, 5 hour battery?

Well, well — what’s this? We just got our hands on what looks like an internal HP Slate presentation given to cool down some of the iPad hype amongst HP employees, and it just happens to have specs and pricing details on the elusive Windows 7 tablet. As we’d heard, the Slate will run $549 in its base configuration, which has a 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 capacitive multitouch display, a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor with UMA graphics and an accelerator for 1080p video playback (we’re assuming it’s a Broadcom Crystal HD chip), 32GB of flash storage and 1GB of non-upgradeable RAM. There’s also a $599 version with 64GB of storage, and both models will have a five-hour battery, an SDHC slot, two camera, a USB port, a SIM card slot for the optional 3G modem, and a dock connector for power, audio, and HDMI out. Of course, what this spec list doesn’t cover is software, and we still haven’t seen much of how HP plans to make Windows 7 on a full slate device with netbook-class internals perform as smoothly or as intuitively as its demo videos. That’s not a small challenge, especially since the iPad is out now and setting some pretty high expectations for how this new breed of tablets should work. We’ve got our fingers crossed — show us something good, HP.

First 3G iPad sighted in the wild, Steve Wozniak plays it cool by riding a Segway (video)

Loyal reader Parth Dhebar is keeping us updated on happenings in the San Jose Valley Fair Apple Store this morning, and earlier laptop signings from the Woz have escalated into an impromptu Segway demo courtesy of the eccentric Apple Inc founder. Where he got the personal transporter from, we don’t know, why he’s riding it around and doing his best Paul Blart impersonation is not important, what matters is that we’ve got video of Steve Wozniak on a Segway and it’s right after the break. We’re also told an iPad has emerged out of the ether for the Woz-man and his fellow early bird queuers to have a tantalizing play around with — presumably thanks to Apple Store employees treating their patriarch like they should. The perks of being in the right place at the right time, eh?

[Thanks, Parth]

Update: That’s a 3G iPad old Steve is playing around with! Look at the plastic up top. We’ll do our usual digging to try and find out how that wily superhero managed to get his mitts on a device that’s a good few weeks away from release.

Update 2: We’ve got video of the 3G iPad running Netflix. An Apple engineer apparently walked through the queue with it, it didn’t come out of Steve’s magical trenchcoat pocket.

Update 3: Interested in seeing Woz grab his iPad, sign a few hundred others, and then ride off into the sunset on his Segway? Gallery’s just below.

FCC reveals iPad internals; you still don’t have one (update: iFixit has 3G pics!)

Wowsa, looks like those FCC folks really take their jobs seriously. With the iPad they didn’t just bother to test out the radiation and maybe take a little peek for themselves under the covers, but instead disassembled the whole machine on camera. Unfortunately they took it upon themselves to cover over the specific chips, so we’ll have to wait for one of those pro bono teardowns to get the full lay of the land, but it’s still a unique look at the makeup of this thing. Check it out in the gallery below.

Update: The dudes and dudettes over at iFixit are analyzing the board and the components in uncensored fashion — head on over if you considering yourself a “nerd.”

Update 2: iFixit’s now got photos of the iPad’s 3G communications board as well, even though it’ll be another month before the 3G version comes out!

Verizon begins Android 2.1 update rollout for Motorola Droid

Flippin’ finally, right? Verizon Wireless put the long-awaited Android 2.1 update on hold for its cadre of Motorola Droid owners earlier in the month, with an all-too-vague “TBD” as the only detail as to when we could look for it to actually, really land. We’ve just happened upon what looks to be an internal Verizon email that went out this morning, and sure enough, it sounds as if the update will at long last begin hitting Droid owners in just a few minutes. At noon on 3/30 (that’s today, vaquero), a grand total of 1,000 users will receive notification of the update, while 9,000 more will get a similar alert just before midnight. If all goes well, the rest of ya will see v2.1 slide down starting on Thursday, though it looks as if patience will be your only friend as you await your turn. Head on past the break for the full memo, but don’t get your hopes up too high — wouldn’t want to be let down again, would you buttercup?

Exclusive: Dell Aero hands-on and UI walkthrough (video)

We took a look at the Dell Aero during last week’s CTIA bonanza, but AT&T and Dell weren’t exactly forthcoming with letting us take the UI for a spin. Luckily, we’re pretty resourceful folks, so we’ve wrangled some face time with a functioning device, and walked away with some insight into the phone’s unique personality. Read on after the break for a bulleted breakdown of exactly what this phone is all about, a video of the Aero in action, and make sure to feast your eyes on the gallery below.

Update: We’ve just been contacted by an AT&T spokesperson and told on no uncertain terms that the final version of the Aero will definitely have the Android Market, so that’s a relief — and it also means we should be able to get our hands on Maps, even if the firmware doesn’t include it.

Update 2: We’ve also had Dell reach out to us, who adds that “since the Dell Aero is not generally available, this is not representative of the final product.” Seems like the software deficiencies here have riled up carrier and manufacturer alike, which is probably a good thing.
