Nokia 5800 XpressMusic review

We’ve had a chance to put the North American version of Nokia’s latest touchscreen device and its first to run S60 5th Edition — the 5800 XpressMusic — through its paces over on Engadget Mobile, and let’s put it this way: if you’re thinking about taking the plunge on this bad boy, you might want to have a look. No, seriously, it’s just one click away — can’t hurt, now, can it?

How would you change Amazon’s Kindle 2?

Right around 13 months ago, we were asking you fine readers how you’d change Amazon’s original Kindle. Now that it has had some time to think about things and deliver a refined version of its hit e-reader, we’re giving early adopters the chance to fire off yet another round of criticism. Did Bezos & Co. address all of your gripes with the first iteration? Are you still bummed by anything? Is the screen sharp enough for your tastes? Battery life up to snuff? Do you still want more freedom when it comes to using that built-in EV-DO connection? What could Amazon do to make you even more stoked about being a Kindle 2 owner? You never know what the next firmware update could bring, so choose your words wisely.

Meizu M8 unboxing and hands-on!

Yes, folks — things are about to get really real. We have managed, through a series of delicate negotiations, to get our hands on an honest-to-goodness Meizu M8 — heretofore the stuff of pure legend. At first glance, the build quality of the phone is actually pretty decent — it’s mostly plastic, but everything seems to snap together firmly. The battery (which is removable, naturally) is quite large, though we haven’t had a chance to test its life in any significant way. Of course, the real showpiece here is the software — which admittedly owes its entire existence to the iPhone. We’ve found that it’s quite snappy, and the styling and functionality of the UI is really kind of impressive (though this did spend a long time in the oven). Still, the phone’s KIRF roots are clear — you can judge for yourself in the gallery below.

Thanks to the good folks at MP4 Nation for the hookup!

Ask Engadget: Best external hard drive enclosure?

No need to check your LCDs, folks — this is happening. This is this week’s rendition of Ask Engadget, and if you’d rather your own question be in this space next week, shoot us a good one at ask at engadget dawt com.

“Like any good geek, I have upgraded my MacBook’s hard disk many times, and have all the old 2.5-inch SATA disks sitting in a pile. I’d like to put them in a case, but the enclosures I see are either very expensive or look hideous and unreliable. I’d love to get some recommendations for dependable, fairly-priced portable enclosures; USB’s a must, but FireWire 400, then FireWire 800 then eSATA would be bonuses, as would any extra features.”

So, HDD upgraders — what kind of case (or cases) did you procure in order to keep using those displaced drives? Any great stories of success / failure? Let us know, would ya?

Kodak EasyShare Z980 unboxing and impressions

While Kodak’s new Zx1 might be a tad more exciting, Kodak is also keeping at the EasyShare thing with its new Z980 zoomer. We’ve gotten to spend some time with the camera, and while we appreciate the price, the size and the endless zoom, we’re overall none too impressed. Check out our full impressions after the break.

Durabook’s D15RP semi-rugged laptop unboxing and hands-on

Durabook's D15RP semi-rugged laptop unboxing and hands-on

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen the latest in a Durabook around these parts. GammaTech sent along a new D15RP to be part of a little feature we’re brewing, but we thought we’d go ahead and give you a quick peek at the thing first. It wasn’t quite as gratuitously packaged as the Toughbook we also recently aped, but upon seeing the logo on that box we admit to thinking for a moment we’d accidentally received a set of fresh kicks from K-Swiss. So far using it feels like using a real laptop, as opposed to the sensation of typing on an ammo case you get with the Panasonic, but we’ll leave the full comparisons for another day. Until then, enjoy some pics.

Ask Engadget: Best wireless router with USB printing capabilities?

If your low-rate router fails on you, you might as well select a replacement with more utility than the one you’re burying, right? Axel sure thinks so:

“My bargain-basement CompUSA-branded wireless router is finally starting to fail on me, prompting me to buy a new one. I want to get my huge color laser printer (a Konica Magicolor 2400w) off my desk and tucked away next to the router, so I want it to have wireless USB print hub functionality. Gigiabit Ethernet and Draft-N are also necessary here, as I am eventually going to be adding media clients around the house to stream to every TV. Thanks a lot!”

So, there you have it — which wireless router will provide solid, relaiable USB printing while handling the heavy loads of high-def streaming? Think carefully, you wouldn’t want to ruin this guy’s life. Oh, and if you have a question of your own you’d like to see here, send it over to ask at engadget dawt com.

Panasonic’s ultra-thin 54Z1 plasma in the wild

Now that it’s official and priced, Panasonic seems much happier to show off its wireless HD-sporting, ultra-thin Z1 series, and it’s quite the sight to behold. The 54Z1 we got to look at was very strikingly clad in brushed metal gray — compared to the regular black of most of Panasonic’s TV lineup — and of course incredibly thin. The wireless HD receiver box was across the room and working flawlessly, and it was nice to see that the included remote is an RF unit, capable of non-line-of-sight channel changing — it’s starting to feel like the 21st century around here! The plasma picture was of course very good, and we’re really feeling those Viera Tools icons across the bottom. $6,000 though? That’s your call.

Panasonic CES 2009 Blu-ray / HTIB lineup eyes-on

We were able to spot a few of Panasonic’s latest innovations in the home theater space back at CES 2009, but we got a much more intimate look at things during a recent New York showcase. The new Blu-ray decks look nice, if not a touch plain. Not that everyone wants an Alienware-esque BD deck or anything, but we digress. The Blu-ray HTIB systems were particularly of interest, as these things are perfect for sneaking BD into homes that are currently DVD-only, and while we longed for more information on the portable DMP-B15, the on-hand reps didn’t seem too anxious to gush over technical specifications with us. Their loss, totally.

New iPod shuffle first hands-on (with video!)

We just nabbed one of Apple’s new button-free iPod shuffles, and in case you were wondering: yes, it’s really small. We’re gonna play around a bit with the VoiceOver navigation and get you our full impressions in a few, but at first glance we think this is totally usable, especially for the shuffle’s sweaty target demographic. Also: it’s really small.

Update: In-depth impressions are after the break, along with video!
